The 8/1 Affliction PPV show at the Honda Center has been canceled.
Undoubtedly the decision not to continue stemmed from Josh Barnett being disqualified from appearing on the show due to a failed test for steroids. Barnett was scheduled to fight Fedor Emelianenko for the Russian's WAMMA heavyweight championship in the main event.
The promotion has officially announced the cancellation in a press release today, stating they didn't have enough time to find and adequately promote a new main event.
"Finding an opponent for the number one ranked MMA heavyweight in such a short period of time was a huge endeavor and I'm thrilled at the amount of fighters willing to take on this challenge," said Affliction Entertainment Vice President Tom Atencio. "But in the end, we didn't have enough time to promote a new fight to out standards."
The promotion had said yesterday that it would announce Emelianenko's new opponent today.
The decision was apparently a last minute call as a media source received word a new commercial was to run for the show this morning, which did not mention Emelianenko's opponent, and, 20 minutes after getting the word to replace the old commercial with the new one, they sent an e-mail saying they were canceling all advertising because the show is no longer taking place.
Those having tickets to the event should contact Ticketmaster for a refund.
