"The Rise and Fall of WCW" is the subject of the latest WWE historical DVD release. In our biggest historical feature so far in 2009, we look at the truth and fiction of what put down Jim Crockett Promotions, what built WCW, why WCW struggled, what killed the promotion and what really happened is the subject of a major issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter coming out this week.
This will be part of two Observers coming out next week, which also looks at the future of Randy Couture, the interesting lesson of the Couture-Nogueira fight to be learned from, the most detailed look at all aspects of the Rey Mysterio/WWE situation that took place over the past week, what is next for Jeff Hardy, plans for Wrestlemanias in 2010 and 2012, coverage of UFC 101, a Hall of Famer signs a one year contract to return to wrestling full-time after many years being away, the return of legends in one of Japan's biggest events of the year that included Kenta Kobashi back to All Japan, plus a look at Dragon Gate USA with a complete rundown of this week's PPV show, a look at the real story behind the first pro wrestling event ever at the Tokyo Dome, even more on the Kurt Angle/Rhaka Khan situation and so much more with two issues jam packed with news.
All subscriptions to the newsletter and web site for more than one month will include what is traditionally our most talked about and best selling issue of the year, the 2009 Hall of Fame issue, which is now just a few weeks away.
Both issues are available today on the web site for premium members as a back issue from 1992 was also put up this week for premium members on the site.
Our lead piece looks at the impact of the death of the company, the heyday of the company, the beginning of the end, how big wrestling was during that period, a review of the DVD, where the DVD was accurate, where it wasn't, and whose memories were the most accurate.
We look back at things important not covered in the DVD, including why WCW really closed down, Eric Bischoff's last week attempt to save the company, many others who were willing to buy the company, how the death of WCW affected the death of ECW, and the unique reason why Vince McMahon's first attempt to buy the company fell through, and how it was a decision McMahon was unable to convince broadcast partners that killed it the first time. We also look at what was planned to keep the WCW name alive in a big way, and the night it all died in a snap judgment. We look at the angle already shot that was going to lead to a change of WWE greatly as we now know it.
We look at so many issues that happened that spelled the difference in the wrestling war, and that the biggest difference was nothing that people have said, but simply luck in so many different ways.
We also look at a very major problem evident with WCW historical releases, and in the case of this DVD, errors so glaring they should have never snuck through. We look at major events that weren't covered. We look back at the Jim Herd era, the endless infighting, the real reason WCW started to become successful financially, why Jim Herd was never able to compete with Vince McMahon, the aggressiveness in competition of McMahon, the background of Jim Crockett Sr. and how he got started in wrestling and the building of the Mid Atlantic brand by his son.
We look at why pro wrestling flourished in most of North America during the 70s, how Ric Flair first became a national star, how TBS started airing two hours of wrestling and how Georgia Championship Wrestling became the hottest promotion on television. We look back at how being hot on television wasn't making them any money and why the company started losing money, and the death of the Georgia company.
We look back at Vince McMahon on TBS, big money people wanting to partner with McMahon and getting turned down, why McMahon sold the TBS time slot to Crockett, the golden era of Crockett and how quickly and why it ended.
We also look at the end of Mid South Wrestling, the plight of Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes in the 90s, Kip Frey and Bill Watts running WCW and what did both of them in, as well as the success and later failure of Eric Bischoff.
We also have full coverage of UFC 102, including poll results, match-by-match coverage, how much people made on the show, as well as a look at Randy Couture's new contract. We look at the role of Brock Lesnar, Couture talking about his own future, business notes on the show including some very important ones, as well as the Portland media coverage. We also look at the middleweight title picture, and the emergence of a new star.
We've got a detailed look at the Rey Mysterio situation, with all the twists and turns and the final verdict of what will end up happening and why. It includes a lot on WWE testing procedure, Mysterio's claims about what it was he used and why he believed the suspension should have been lifted, and why it wasn't.
We've got a look at the 25th anniversary of the career of Keiji Muto, including several legends back in the All Japan ring, notes on the show, notes on a huge mainstream celebrity at the show who got involved in one of the matches and much more on All Japan's biggest event in five years.
We also have a preview of Dragon Gate USA, with a detailed look at the goals of the company, as well as a rundown of the first PPV which debuts this week.
We also have a look back at someone who only had three matches, but all three were important for different reasons, including the biggest sell job Antonio Inoki ever did, and the creation of one of the most famous pro wrestling finishing moves of the last decade.
We have notes on Jeff Hardy's next moves, creative being told that a character is no more, more on the release of Nick Dinsmore, talk of a former college football star and a member of an NBA dance team being signed by WWE. We also look at Jerry Lawler as mayor, the contract talk of Jim Ross, MVP talking about the death rate of wrestlers, WWE stars on a national TV show, as well as business notes and highlights of all the weekend events.
We also have our usual weekly features such as the most in-depth look at the ratings, the results from the major league events held around the world over the past week, and rundown of the major television shows.
