WWE Superstars Recap for October 22nd, 2009
By Andy Napier
WHAT WORKED
We open up with a Lou Albano tribute video, including the “Captain Lou” song, which I’ve never heard. What a maniac. In a good way. It’s weird to see him in the sit down interviews from recent years where he’s mellow and reflective.
Yeah, this theme song is starting to grow on me.
ECW’s offering is a tag match with Ezekiel Jackson and Vladimir Kozlov against Tommy Dreamer and Goldust. Tommy’s determined face is pretty much just him looking like his nose itches all the time. Zeke and Goldust start, Zeke tosses Goldust off from a side headlock. Goldust and Dreamer with quick tags early, keeping Jackson off balance. Zeke with some hard shots in the corner that look really, really stiff. Either that or he’s just gotten very good. Kozlov tags in but this full time tag team is no match for the chemistry and quick tags of Goldust and Dreamer. Striker really needs to cut it out with the nicknames. “Prophet of Doom” Ezekiel Jackson. “Leader of the Labor Party” Tommy Dreamer. WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? Zeke with a double underhook on Dreamer, which I’ve always felt was an underrated rest hold. Tommy rams his own shoulder into the turnbuckle, thus hurting… Jackson. Hm. Zeke and Kozlov have some miscommunication and Goldust uses the chaos to pin Kozlov after a downward spiral. The Ruthless Roundtable duo destroy Goldust and Dreamer after the fact. Why didn’t they just win? I liked the match though, so that’s something.
Main event is from Smackdown!, another tag bout. I’m starting to think we’re not getting the Ask A Diva segment tonight, which is very upsetting. Anyhow, it’s Eric Escobar w/Vickie Guerrero and Drew McIntyre versus Matt Hardy and R-Truth. These are rematches from last Friday’s Smackdown, both of which were won by the heels. Truth and Escobar get it going and Truth dances, infuriating the suave newcomer who uses the power of shoulder blocks to make his point. Crowd is crazy into Matt as he fights from underneath against Drew. We take a commercial break as Matt and Truth hit stereo baseball slide dropkicks onto their opponents, leaving them flustered and such. Faces are still in control when we come back, which does my heart good. Eric takes over with an arm bar drop and that limb seems to be favored as a point of focus by all Superstars… uh, superstars. Drew works a top wristlock while the crowd is slow to get into a Truth comeback. Doesn’t matter, as Eric cuts him off after a tag anyway. Truth uses a Stone Cold Stunner as a counter, which does in fact stun Eric Escobar, but only for about five seconds. What a tough, tough man this Eric Escobar must be. Truth goes for a sunset flip and Eric actually brings out a cool counter back into an arm bar that I’ve never seen before. I approve. Truth gets a near fall on Drew with a twisting body scissors into a roll up, and finally gets the tag to Matt. Drew takes a bulldog right on his head, which was something else. Matt goes up top and hits a moonsault. Things get all nutty as Truth tries a dive over the top rope and completely whiffs. OUCH. Matt get necked on the top rope by Escobar as Vickie distracts the ref, and Drew drills Hardy with his double arm DDT for the pinfall. Good match, but it’s a weird result considering what’s going to happen on Smackdown! the next night.
WHAT DIDN’T WORK
Our opening match tonight, presented by RAW, features Kelly taking on Gail Kim. Is this a baby face match? Why are they fighting if they’re partners on Sunday? There have to be some heel Divas on RAW. Crowd way more into Kelly as she and Gail trade pinfall attempts and slap hands! Kelly follows up a superfluous back flip with a bad arm drag, thus fully honoring former WWE superstar Rob Van Dam. Lots of completely random athletic spots in this one. Cole and King are so enthralled they star talking about Lawler’s history in sixty minute matches. Kelly hit’s a spinning head scissors and follows with a roll up for a near fall. Kelly finally puts it away with the Kelly Killer. Both women appear to be alive afterwards, making it a misnomer in one way or another. After watching a replay of the move, I’m still not sure what the Kelly Killer is supposed to be. Like, at all.
