ROH TV report featuring one of year's best TV matches

ROH TV on HDNet Report
November 23, 2009
By Paul Collins
- A video montage of “We Said Farewell” to Bryan Danielson.
- Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak open up the show saying that even
though Danielson is gone, the show must go on, and the main event
tonight will be the Young Bucks challenging the American Wolves for
the ROH World Tag Team Titles.
MATCH ONE: Kenny King w/Rhett Titus v. Brent Albright
- Quick flashback to King & Titus taking out Jerry Lynn from over a
month ago. The story of this match is that the entire locker room
wants a piece of King, and tonight is Albright’s chance.
- With that being said, it was weird they shook hands before the match
since Albright really wanted a shot at King.
- They exchange agile moves AND dances. Albright does not have great
rhythm. Albright goes after Titus on the outside allowing King to
clothesline the big man. King had the upper hand after that, but
Albright turned it around after an exploder to the outside followed by
a suicide dive to the outside, and then he threw Titus against the
guardrail. Albright went to suplex King back inside the ring, and
Titus grabbed his leg, letting King fall on top of him. Titus
continued to hold onto his leg letting King get a cheap win.
- Austin Aries joined his protégés in the ring for an attack on
Albright. Titus hit him with a chair, and they went for another spike
piledriver, but Colt Cabana came in for the save. *
- A subdued Young Bucks promo where they talk about the prestige of
the ROH Tag belts and how big this title shot is for them.
MATCH TWO: D-Lo Brown v. Sal Rinauro
- Prazak and Hogewood tried to push that Rinauro was trying to be more
confident. He tried to show this by trying to pull D-Lo into a
clothesline during the handshake, but failed. D-Lo threw Sal around,
then went to the outside and got the ring announcers cell phone and
began to TWEET! Mike Hogewood then pushed HIS Twitter account at
www.twitter.com/slaptheporpoise. Best name EVER. Rinauro gets in
very brief offense, but D-Lo finishes the match with a TKO into a
sit-out power bomb. No stars. D-Lo continues to Twitter after the
match.
- Kyle Durden tries to interview Nigel, asking him about the RUMORS
that he is leaving Ring of Honor. Nigel stares at him, lowers his
sunglasses, smiles, pushes his sunglasses back up and walks away.
- After a commercial break, Nigel comes out to the ring for a promo.
He asks how you sum up 6 years of your life in 3 minutes? You can’t,
so he will just say thank you. There is only one person he wants to
thank, but this person is shy so he will go to the back and bring this
person out. He goes behind the curtain and says that person is…HIM!
He says it’s him that believed in himself, it says it was him who kept
coming back despite injuries, and it was him who won the title for
himself. So if you don’t agree with that, you can kiss his British
ass. So now he will leave the building, which he did by going out
the front door. As he left he said he’s leaving on a jet plane, and
he doesn’t know when he’ll be back again. The last shot is him
walking down the street away from the building.
- American Wolves promo with Kyle Durden interviewing them. Both
Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards put themselves over, talking about
their dominance and how impressive they are. Edwards mentioned that
everyone is wowed by the Young Bucks, but they are not, and that the
hunt is about the claim 2 more victims.
MATCH THREE: Super Smash Brothers (Player Uno & Player Dos) v. Brandon
Jay & John Kerman
- Unless this was going to be a squash to put one team over, which it
wasn’t, this match was not worth the time. There were okay double
team moves, including the finish which was Dos hitting a great flip
over the top rope, letting Uno get a roll-up for the win. Otherwise,
pushing other storylines and letting guys get some promo time would
have been better. Zero stars.
- Jim Cornette promo. He mentions his live debut comes in 2 weeks.
Fans don’t have to worry because all of the changes he brings will be
positive, but the locker room on the other hand should because there
will be problems. That especially means Austin Aries since he already
laid down the gauntlet, and Cornette is always up for a challenge. He
thinks ROH and HDNet are the future, but everyone must tow the line
and do their part. Also, he doesn’t want anyone to be about “me, me,
me,” but wants people to be about improving ROH, otherwise people are
out the door. He doesn’t know who or what you are going to see, but
there is no other product in the world like ROH and there never will
be.
MAIN EVENT: The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) v. The American
Wolves (c) for the ROH World Tag Team Championship
- Code of Honor is NOT upheld!
- Lots of great double team moves by the Young Bucks to start the
match, including in-stereo dives to the outside. After the initial
flurry, the Wolves cut off the ring on Matt.
- Great spot by Richards. He had Matt in the tree of woe, and made it
like he was going to come full speed at him, but slowed down, spun
around and gave Matt a nut tap.
- They teased a couple of hot tags, but the Wolves were able to cut it
off. Finally got it when Richards kicked Edwards when Matt ducked out
of the way.
- Nick hit a sitout facebuster on Edwards, then hit a moonsault off
the apron on Richards, then back to the top rope and a flying
crossbody on Edwards for a 2 count. Followed it with a 2 count after
a swinging DDT. Double team standing moonsault/splash for a near
fall. Edwards gets his knees up on a moonsault attempt by Nick.
Facebuster by Edwards then a Richards tombstone for a 2 count.
Reverse hurricanrana on Edwards by Matt during a Doomsday Device
attempt. Nick followed that with a top rope hurricanrana on Richards.
Knee strike in the corner on Edwards by Nick, then he dives on
Richards on the outside. That allowed Nick to hit a spinning
blockbuster on Edwards for a near fall. Double team 450
splash/moonsault combo for a 2 count when Richards broke it up.
Wolves turned it around and got a close fall with a power
bomb/lungblower combo. Edwards turned it into a single crab on Matt.
Nick tried to break it up with a springboard attack, but Richards cut
him off in mid-air, and Matt was forced to tap out. ****
- Awesome main event. Other than the filler of the Smash Brothers
match, the show had a very good pace. It seems like the show is
finally starting to get it’s footing. See you next week…and get me on
Figure Four Daily!
