ROH TV report

ROH on HDNet TV Report
February 22, 2010
by Paul Collins
- For some reason this show ended at 45 minutes past the hour, so I
guess they didn't have enough to fill the time? That shouldn't
happen.
- It starts off with a clip of the beginning of the Austin Aries-Tyler
Black ROH Title match from New York City on 2/13. It was a tease that
they would be showing the rest later in the show.
MATCH ONE: Rhett Titus v. El Generico
- One of the themes of this match was Generico continuing to be
effected by Steen turning on him at the end of 2009. The announcers
were calling it "mental block."
- This match was slow to get going until Generico busted out a
somersault plancha. From there, the two guys went back and forth, so
there wasn't any heat built. For the finish, Generico became
distracted, so Titus played possum and caught the Generic Luchador
with a small package for the win. *1/2
- Kyle Dudren is backstage interviewing Colt Cabana. Durden asks him
if he is going to be effected in the ring by Generico's situation
since the two are close friends. Colt says inside of the ring it
won't bother him, but on a personal level it does. Before Colt can
continue, Durden pretends to have an earpiece in and says we have to
cut to the outside because there is a situation.
- Necro Butcher is outside in the parking lot yelling and screaming,
and he comes off as not believable at all, as compared to his good
promo from the week before. It must be when he gets fired up that he
loses all believability. He finds someone in the parking lot and
tells him to go find Erick Stevens, and he'll be right here waiting
for him.
MATCH TWO: Colt Cabana v. Bobby Shields
- Cabana toys around with Shields, doing a lot of wacky moves. This
didn't last long as Colt used a Dusty elbow and locked Shields in the
Billy Goat's Curse (inverted Crab) for the win. So I guess this was a
TECHNICAL SQUASH! Steve Corino came out to the isle and got on the
mic. Corino, speaking on behalf of his buddy Kevin Steen, warned
Colt, in reference to his friendship with Generico, that he should be
careful who he sticks up for.
- Next week: American Wolves v. Dark City Fight Club
- They cut to the outside where Necro is "beating up" Mr. Ernesto
Osiris. By "beating up," I mean throwing really soft strikes that
don't look like they're doing anything. Stevens jumps Necro from
behind and they start fighting, and the fight heads into the building.
Necro throws a punch, but Stevens pulled Guisseppe the Timekeeper in
the way and he gets clocked! They cut to commercial, but when they
come back, they show that Stevens piled chairs in the middle of the
ring and slammed Necro into them. That's when Eddie Kingston came
down and made the save.
- They show more clips of the Aries-Black match, which included Kenny
King getting on the apron while Black was on the top rope. Roderick
Strong came up and kicked King, but that caused Black to get crotched.
They then showed a clip of Jim Cornette screaming at Black, so Black
responds by giving him a superkick. They finished it by showing Black
in mid-air executing the Phoenix Splash, but they paused the picture
and just played the audio of Black getting the 3 count and the title
win.
- Jim Cornette promo saying he thinks Necro Butcher is a great
professional wrestler, but he's also nuts. He said he's like a
"rainbow trout in a car wash." He said he'll deal with him. One
other thing he'll deal with is the Austin Aries-Tyler Black situation,
and one of the ways he'll do that is by having a tag team match next
week featuring Aries & King against Black & Strong.
MAIN EVENT: The Briscoe Brothers (c) v. The Young Bucks - ROH World
Tag Team Championship
- During the match on the crawl at the bottom of the screen, they
pushed the ROH World TV Title tournament will start in two weeks.
- Early going of this match was very fast paced with the teams
exchanging quick moves and quick tags. The Briscoes get Nick and work
him over for a bit with some power moves. Matt gets tagged in and the
Bucks get the advantage on Jay, but that doesn't last very long.
- To paraphrase Joey Styles in reference to calling the first Rey
Mysterio-Psychosis matches in ECW, "this match is too fast to call."
For the rest of the way out, there was no cutting off the ring to
build heat on anyone, as each team had quick ups and downs. There was
great teamwork by both with cool double team moves.
- Mark Briscoe blocks the Bucks attempt at More Bang For Your Buck.
That let Jay and Mark hit a top rope Razor's Edge/Neckbreaker combo on
Matt that looked like death, but Nick broke it up at 2. The end was
near for the Bucks, however, as the Briscoes caught them with the
Doomsday Device for the victory. This match went about 15 minutes.
***3/4
- I know the Necro Butcher has a certain charm, but he came off as a
goof in this angle since it was meant to be serious. His offense looks
ridiculous and his acting was, well, poor. It looks like they'll
continue teasing the American Wolves break-up next week, and we'll
finally see how Black comes off as the new champion. The main event
was really good, and I'm glad to see the Briscoes being in the spot
they deserve. However, they have an hour and they need to use the
whole thing. Hopefully the TV Title tournament in 2 weeks will help
fill that time.
