'WWE Vintage’ TV Report #304 – March 30th, 2014

Shown on Sky Sports in the U.K.

By Stephen Lyon.

This week's theme: WWF Tag Title Turmoil leading up to Wrestlemania 17. Matches featured this week included: The Dudleys vs Edge & Christian vs The Hardy Boys in a TLC 2 match for the WWF Tag Team Titles (WWF Wrestlemania 17, April 2001); Edge & Christian vs The Dudleys for the WWF Tag Team Titles (WWF Royal Rumble 2001, January 2001); The Dudleys vs The Hardys for the WWF Tag Team Titles (WWF Raw Is War, March 2001); The Hardys vs Edge & Christian for the WWF Tag Team Titles (WWF Raw Is War, March 2001); Edge & Christian vs The Dudleys for the WWF Tag Team Titles (WWF Raw Is War, March 2001); and Matt Hardy vs Rhyno (WWF Smackdown, March 2001).

Show was hosted by Gene Okerlund & Renee Young.

1) The Dudley Boys defeated Edge & Christian for the WWF Tag Team titles. This match took place at the 'WWF Royal Rumble 2001' pay-per-view event, held in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 21st, 2001. Announcers for this match were Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler. This was a fun match. Edge & Christian were heels and Dudleys were faces here. Dudleys won the titles, after Bubba Ray Dudley kicked out of a pinfall attempt following Edge's spear. Edge accidentally gave partner Christian a Wassup top rope head butt to the groin, and the Dudleys combined to 3D Edge for the pinfall win.

A clip aired of the Dudleys retaining the WWF Tag Team titles, defeating Edge & Christian, and Undertaker & Kane in a Tables Match at the WWF No Way Out 2001 ppv, on February 25th, 2001.

2) The Hardy Boys (w/Lita in their corner) defeated the Dudley Boys to win the WWF Tag Team titles. This match aired on the March 5th, 2001 live edition of 'WWF Raw Is War', taped in Washington, D.C. Announcers for this match were Jim Ross & Paul Heyman. Dudleys were in control of the match, when Christian ran out and interfered, hitting D-Von with a chair to the back, unseen by the referee. Matt Hardy then hit the Twist of Fate on D-Von for the pinfall victory, to win the WWF Tag Team titles.

3) Edge & Christian defeated The Hardy Boys to win the WWF Tag Team titles. This match aired on the March 19th, 2001 live edition of 'WWF Raw Is War', taped in Albany, New York. Announcers for this match were Jim Ross & Paul Heyman. The storyline leading into this match was that the Dudleys had earned the tag team title shot, but had not turned up at the arena on time, and were replaced by Edge & Christian in this match. Lita attempted to get involved in this match, giving Christian a huracanrana off the top. Edge gained revenge by giving Lita the Edgecution. The finish saw the debut of Rhyno, who ran in and attacked Jeff Hardy, leading to Edge scoring the pinfall win to regain the WWF Tag Team titles.

A clip aired from the same show, of the Dudleys arriving backstage, late because somebody (presumably Edge & Christian) had 'cancelled their flights'. Commissioner William Regal informed them that they had missed their title match, but the Dudleys persuaded him to give them their title match later that same show.

4) The Dudley Boys defeated Edge & Christian for the WWF Tag Team titles. This match aired on the March 19th, 2001 live edition of 'WWF Raw Is War', taped in Albany, New York. Announcers for this match were Jim Ross & Paul Heyman. In the same manner that Rhyno had debuted earlier in the show, here the finish saw the surprise debut of Spike Dudley, who hit Christian with the Dudley Dog, leading to the Dudleys nailing Edge with a 3D to win the match and regain the WWF Tag Team titles.

5) Rhyno (w/Edge & Christian in his corner) defeated Matt Hardy (w/Jeff Hardy in his corner). This match aired on the March 29th, 2001 edition of 'WWF Smackdown', taped in Detroit, Michigan on March 27th, 2001. Announcers for this match were Michael Cole & Paul Heyman. This match aired on the go-home show before Wrestlemania 17. The finish saw Hardy hitting a Twist of Fate on Rhyno, only for Christian to interfere and give Hardy an unprettier, leading to Rhyno scoring the win. After the match, the Hardy combined to give Rhyno a swanton bomb on to a chair. The Dudleys also came out and gave Rhyno a 3D through a table.

6) Edge & Christian defeated The Dudley Boys and The Hardy Boys to win the WWF Tag Team titles in a Tables, Ladders & Chair match. This match took place at the 'WWF Wrestlemania 17' pay-per-view event, held in Houston, Texas on April 1st, 2001. Announcers for this match were Jim Ross & Paul Heyman. This was a terrific match with kinds of crazy tables, ladders and chairs spots. All three teams' 'seconds' got involved - Spike Dudley gave Christian a Dudley Dog through a table outside the ring. Rhyno gored Matt Hardy through a table in the ring. Lita came out and jerked Edge off a ladder, then gave Rhyno a huracanrana off the top rope. Lita also hit Spike Dudley with a chair, which led to the Dudleys giving Lita a 3D. In several of the more memorable spots, Jeff Hardy walked across the top of three ladders in an effort to reach the belts hanging from the ceiling and was actually hanging from the hook when Edge dove off a very tall ladder and speared him to the mat. Bubba Ray Dudley & Matt Hardy also took a huge bump together over the top rope, through four tables stacked on top of one another at ringside. The finish saw Christian, on Rhyno's shoulders, climb a ladder and retrieve the tag team title belts to win the match.

Closing thoughts: Fun show, with a great main event.
