MMA Junkie reported tonight that both the UFC and Fox Sports have parted ways with Chael Sonnen, confirmed by both organizations with a joint statement:
“The UFC and FOX Sports organizations announced today the termination of their respective broadcasting services agreements with analyst Chael Sonnen. This decision comes in light of Sonnen failing a second test conducted by the Nevada Athletic Commission for banned substances in June. Sonnen was previously under temporary suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission for failing an initial test conducted in May.”
Shortly after the first positive test by the NSAC, the 37-year-old Sonnen announced his retirement on UFC Tonight, a Fox Sports One program. On Saturday night, news broke that Sonnen had failed a second test for banned substances by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, leading to speculation as to what would happen to the high-profile star. For nearly a year, UFC president Dana White has been touting how much Fox loved Sonnen as an on-air personality. The decision to terminate his contract can't be much of a surprise considering the high-profile nature of the offense.
More to come on this story tonight with Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Radio, and surely more to come from White as UFC heads into one of its biggest PPVs of the year this Saturday.
