Welcome to another season of the Ultimate Fighter. Sorry about not getting the last episode but I was out of town on vacation. Anyways, the first episode was great! Go out of your way to watch it right now.
The guys made a tally and crossed out Joey’s name. Joey is naturally bummed out about his loss. Team Hughes trained.
Before Team Serra started training, Coach Serra gave a speech. Joey started having doubts, thought about leaving. Mac tried to talk him out of leaving with a motivational speech. I have a feeling I’m not going to like Mac. He’s the type of pretentious guy I can’t stand. That doesn’t take away him being a good fighter or anything. Upon hearing about Joey’s wanting to leave, Coach Serra went up the house to talk him out of it. I heard the word “bro” a lot in the conversation and the phrase “be a man” came up quite a bit as well. Joe agreed to stay and asked to make a phone call. Serra refused. Matt Serra may not be the best fighter in the world but he seems like he would be a great coach.
Next day, Joey started as Serra’s assistant coach and all seemed well in the universe.
Back at the house, the Team Hughes’ guys pondered about the next match (this season, the teams alternate picking fights). Dorian thought he was going to get picked and seemed bummed out. On the day of the fight announcement, he started eyeballing guys on the other side. Well, his instincts were right, Team Serra chose him to fight Matt Arroyo. The coaches told Dorian not to worry about the fight, explaining that his stand-up was far superior to his opponent’s.
Matt told Matt that he had confidence in him. They coached him on how to transition from the stand-up to the ground. Since he cut a fight promo 22 minutes in to the show, it seems we might have a decision fight on our hands. Oh boy.
At Team Hughes training session, Matt distributed Bibles to everyone and told them to read the book of Esther. He told them to read and reflect on what character represents Matt Hughes. Seriously. Some of the guys like Mac weren’t interested in this at all. Others were talking about how the King Xerxes in The Bible is the same Xerxes in the movie “300” and wondered if there was a movie version of Esther (the 2006 film, “One Night with the King” is about Esther). I find it kind of sad that guys can’t read nine pages of a book. Team Serra found out about all this and described Hughes as a nutjob. BTW, Hughes said of all the characters, Queen Esther herself represented him. He corresponded this by claiming he would be just as happy working in an old folk’s home as he is fighting. **Little Trivia note: Esther is the only book in the Bible that doesn’t mention God’s name** Oh yeah, Matt trained Dorian too.
Joey, acting like a massive tool, kept on talking about how he wanted to talk to his girl. He started worrying about what she was doing. Why can’t people follow the rules that they know beforehand? This pissed Coach Serra off and he decided to head to the house to deal with Joey (who was giving Matt moral support)!
Coach Serra arrived at the house. This is gonna be great. Well, it wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. Coach Serra basically told him to quit complaining.
Dorian and Matt cut the most relaxed, blasé promos I’ve ever heard. This all led to….
The Fight: Ok, this looks like it’s not going to a decision. YAY! After a little kickboxing, Dorian let Matt corner him against the cage and got taken down. Matt was on top in half guard, and maneuvered to the mount, laying in punches. Matt gave up his back and received a rear naked choke for his troubles. Naturally, he tapped out. That was a short fight, thus proving my prediction completely wrong. A so-so show that didn’t live up to last week’s episode. Next episode: Matt gives a heart to heart and Joey acts like an idiot. {plug}
