“Thirty in ‘08”
It’s the beginning of a brand new year, and as sure as time marches forward, columnists around the world put out pieces talking about what they want to see in the future, what resolution so-and-so should make, and so on and so forth. Well, dear friends, I’m going to one up my brethren. Not many know this about me, but I’m certified clairvoyant. After a tragic accident in my youth, one involving a fishing pole and a puggle, I found myself blessed with “the gift”; it’s true, I have an uncanny ability to see into the future. While I haven’t yet used my awesome power to win the lottery (that would break the soothsayer’s code, you see), I will use it now to give all of you a glimpse at what 2008 will bring. Some may call these “predictions” but I like to think of them as guarantees.
Without further ado, I present thirty predictions for 2008.
1) There will not be the same number of upsets in 2008 as in 2007. ’08 will be back to normal.
2) Randy Couture will be seen on UFC television. (And not just in clips, and now just in someone’s corner.)
3) Tyson Griffin will be involved in one of the best fights of the year.
4) Tim Sylvia will be involved in one of the worst fights of the year.
5) Matt Hughes will move up to middleweight.
6) BJ Penn will beat Joe Stevenson for the UFC Lightweight Championship. He will then defeat Sean Sherk. Finally, Penn will defend against Matt Serra, who will drop to lightweight after losing to St. Pierre and Hughes.
7) Anderson Silva will lose.
8) Brock Lesnar will either lose to Frank Mir or win the UFC Heavyweight Championship.
9) Jon Fitch will keep winning, look incredibly impressive, and then be dominated by Georges St. Pierre so much so that people wonder what anyone ever saw in Fitch to begin with.
10) Georges St. Pierre will not lose.
11) The WEC will not run a PPV. It will, however, produce incredibly entertaining cards.
12) Clay Guida will lose another close one.
13) Pedro Rizzo will fight in the Octagon once again.
14) Chuck Liddell and Quinton Jackson will fight for a third time. The event will draw over 1.5 million PPV buys.
15) Thales Leites will challenge for the UFC Middleweight title.
16) I lied. Tim Sylvia will be involved in at least TWO of the worst fights of the year.
17) Lyoto Machida will lose – badly.
18) Gilbert Melendez and Josh Thomson will have an incredible war.
19) Nick Diaz will lose his mind. Again.
20) Kazushi Sakuraba will take a beating.
21) Vitor Belfort will return to the UFC; “The Old Vitor” will not.
22) Travis Lutter will make weight.
23) At least one major UFC star will fail a steroid test. They will blame tainted supplements.
24) Roger Huerta will lose. The fight will be great.
25) KID Yamamoto will lose.
26) Cung Le will beat Frank Shamrock.
27) EXC will buy another company. It will not make a profit.
28) Strikeforce will make a profit. It will not buy another company.
29) I didn’t tell the whole truth. Inexplicably, Tim Sylvia will also be involved in one great fight.
30) More people will read this than will watch the IFL. {plug}
