Fight Network Radio Recap Nov 5th.
With Mauro Ranallo and John Pollock
The insane luchador has left the WWE! It’s unfortunate that Super Crazy has left, but at the same time he was not being used to his full potential. Crazy is yet another talented individual that the WWE has wasted. He could have easily helped the cruiserweight division like he once did for ECW. If you are unfamiliar with his work, checkout his three-way matches with Nunzio and Tajiri from the old ECW.
Scott Wagner of Ballroom Boxing on Fight Network Radio.
The big news in boxing recently was that ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley has released his father as a trainer (recall Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his father). One must question if this is a good decision coming off his recent KO win over Ricardo Mayorga. Wanger makes an excellent point that can be used in any facet of life and that is “your father is your best friend; don’t ever get rid of your father.” Wagner continues as he feels Mosley’s father pushed his career in the right direction. The feeling overall was that this was a poor judgment call on Mosley’s side. It has also been said that he was looking to add Nazim Richardson (Hopkins trainer) to the team, but like Ranallo says, what can Richardson teach Mosley at this point in his career?
Here’s an interesting quote, “Americans can’t fight as well as they think they can.” Wagner addresses this statement by stating that if American’s do not produce the best boxers, then why is he so eager to fight in the United States. On another note, Wagner breaks down the fight and looks at each fighter’s record. Joe Calzaghe has said this will be his last fight and a win would push him to 46-0. Ranallo poses an interesting question as he says that if Calzaghe wins, he will be only three wins away from Rocky Marciano’s record, but does this still hold any relevance today? Wagner answers that Calzaghi is specifically looking to maintain his clean record and retire with zero losses. He also states that Jones looks focused and it is possible that Calzaghe could suffer his first loss. The feeling is that if Jones is focused, he can beat anyone whereas Calzaghe on the other hand could not. His reasoning comes from the fact that Jones has fought much tougher opponents in the past whereas Calzaghi has not fought opponents of the same caliber. Wagner believes that Jones’ experience in tougher bouts could make the difference in this boxing match.
Top contender in the UFC’s lightweight division Kenny Florian also appeared on the show. When asked about not having the chance to fight for the title against BJ Penn, Florian stated he was content in having the opportunity to fight top competition such as Joe Stevenson. In his upcoming fight with Stevenson, Florian believes that Stevenson will try to take the fight to the ground and as a result, he has worked extensively on his wrestling and boxing.
When asked about the Lesnar vs Couture bout, Florian chose Couture based on the experience factor. He certainly posed an interesting breakdown. This will be strength versus experience and being the cerebral fighter Couture is, expect him to have a very well thoughtout game plan heading into this one. Florian believes that if Couture can avoid the storm in the early goings of this fight, he should have a good change at defeating the ‘next big thing’ in the UFC’s heavyweight division.
The conversation was switched over to the WEC, and Paulo Filho’s weigh in dilemma. As we now know, Filho came into the fight seven pounds overweight which resulted in a catch weight bout. Florian compares making weight like arriving to work on time, as for most fighters it is a sacrifice. In regards to a prediction, Florian believes that Filho’s head is not in the right spot at this point and as a result, he believes Chael Sonnen will take the win either decision or TKO stoppage. (Good Prediction).
