Stich Duran talks St. Pierre controversy; Joe Lauzon talks Saturday's fight

Fight Network Radio Recap February 4th
With Mauro Ranallo
By: Jorge Barbosa
Jacob “Stitch” Duran tells us that in regards to the vaseline episode at UFC 94, new rules will be implemented for corner men. Duran tells us that vaseline is used to help stop the bleeding, but corner men can only apply vaseline to the face, not the rest of body. In addition, he explains that cut men can only enter the octagon during a fight if a cut is endangering the fighter. In terms of the new rules, Duran tells us that he has not yet been briefed. However he believes that there is a possibility that once the vaseline as been applied to the fighter’s face prior to entering the octagon, no member of their entourage will be allowed to touch the fighter.
In regards to the St. Pierre / Penn fight, Duran doesn’t think the vaseline made a difference, he goes on to say that St. Pierre’s performance was so good that this excuse can not be considered. Moreover he states that after the first round, it was evident that Penn was having difficultly and could not see him taking St. Pierre down or submitting him.
Ranallo brings up the point that recently, both Matt Hughes and Matt Serra made claim that during their fights with GSP, they thought he was a little “slippery.” Duran dismisses this as an excuse, “if you have a window of opportunity to make an excuse, I’d probably do it too if I got beat up by him.”
Duran gives us his thoughts on the Margarito incident. He tells us that their was a gel padding that Margarito used to protect the knuckles. Duran enlightens us as he says, “there is a lot of myth in the hand wrap, it can actually hurt the fist more than face.”
“Stitch” Duran gear is coming out at the end of March, look for hand pads, gloves, shin pads and an educational DVD.
Joe Lauzon talks about his upcoming fight at Ultimate Fight Night this Saturday. Lauzon is prepared for his fight regardless of the late switch. He has scouted Stephens and will aim to stay clear of his straight heavy punches and looks to go to the ground. Regarding the Hermes Franca situation, Lauzon says that he wished Franca a speedy recovery but was surprised when Franca told, “I’m gonna kick your ass and your brother sucks.” Originally Lauzon says he wanted the fight because Franca was a big name, but now he is looking to shut Franca up!
Gabe Ruediger takes on Albert Hill tonight…no wait a minute, it’s yet another replacement. Ruediger tells us this is the second time they switch his opponent for tonight’s bout. At the weigh-ins, his opponent came in at 180 pounds, while Ruediger was 170. He has expresses interest in dropping down to the 155 pound division following this fight.
In reference to the Ultimate Fighter, Ruediger gives us his thoughts on the show and talks about how he was wrongly depicted throughout the series. In terms of the negatives and positives of TUF, he tells us that people usually remember him as a quitter, (I wonder why) but on a positive note it does make him a marquee name for smaller promotions. When asked if he would do the show again, Mr. Ruediger says yes; hopefully he won’t be “chillin” by the pool with his steamed vegetables on display.
