">Ontonio Payne</a>. Modpayne on the Board~!
RIP Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett to icons of the American entertainment experience, they will be missed and always remembered.
Welcome to the debut recap of WWE Superstars by me, Ontonio Payne. I've been a a wrestling fan since 1991 and WON reader/subscriber for nearly 10 years and now on to the show. Sorry for the lateness of this report, between the NBA draft and CNN coverage on Michael Jackson this was quite the evening for distractions.
Matches taped in Milwaukee and Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Jack Swagger vs Evan Bourne. This should be fun. Swagger is out all smiles, Bourne is out with taped rips via Mark Henry. Collar and elbow stars and waist lock takedown by Swagger. Backheel trip and Swagger works the hammerlock. Roll through and kip up from Bourne into a counter by Bourne. Kick to the thigh of Swagger, kick to the gut of Bourne. Bournce thrown into the turnbuckle. Big viel out of the corner on Bourne, but he lands on his feet. Drop toe hold leads to a low drop kick to the head of Swagger which gets a 2 count. Bourne attempts a sunset flip from the outside in to no avail, matrix's out and on the rebound from running the ropes is belly to belly suplexed over the top by Swagger, which is as impressive as dangerous looking, and we head to commercial.
American Gladiators, the Hulk Hogan version, debuts on WGN after Superstars~!
Back from break and Swagger has Bournce in a bearhug on the mat. Bourne fights Swagger off. Dropkick to the knee of Swagger. Bourne charges the corner and is met with a knee to the face. Back suplex is countered into a bulldog by Bourne, something Strikers claims to have never seen before....ok. Flying lariat by Bourne. Clothesline missed by Swagger, and Bourne runs the corner for a enzigiri like manuever for a two count. Bourne kicks Swagger out the ring and delivers the double knees from the outside middle ropes, deemed "Asai double knees" by Striker. Really? Bourne to the top, but is cut off with a huge Belly to Belly to nearly the opposite corner by Swagger for a 2 count. Gut wrench powerbomb is countered into a hurricanrana by Bourne for a 2 count. Bourne goes for the Shooting Star Press and lands on his feet, gets nailed with a lariat from behind and the gut wrench, should be "Red, White and Blue", powerbomb gets the 1-2-3 for Swagger. Your winner is Jack Swagger in roughly 9 minutes. ***
Bash commercial for the "Three Stages of Hell"
WWE Did You Know: More people watched Superstars than any show on VH1, Sci-Fi, E! or ESPN. If true this is only because nothing was on those channels last Thursday.
Dolph Ziggler vs Jimmy Wang Yang. Very delighted to see Wang on my TV, thank you thank you and please try the viel. Dolph Zigglers theme music says he's PERFECTION ~! Hardly, he's NICKY! Sorry.
Pre-match Ziggler gets mic time. Says that Smackdown diva's LayLa, Eve and Maria were rendered speechless by his presence on Smackdown and that this Sunday, only on PPV, after defeating Khali they will never forget his name. Match begins with a quick duck down and headlock by Wang. Ropebreak and cheapshot by Ziggler. Reverse exploder suplex by Ziggler for 2. Neckbreaker reversed into a backslide by Wang for 1. Poweslam gets 2 for Ziggler. Crossfaces and chinlock by Ziggler. Elbows from Wang leads to a not so dangerous back suplex by Ziggler. Ziggler off the middle rope, countered witha dropkick by Wang. Wangs comeback is relegated to the small screen of a double-feature replay of the dropkick. Wang with his corner leg lariat and holds on to the top rope. High cross body reversed by Ziggler for two while holding the tights. Dolph crotches Yang and hits him with his yet to be name neck snap manuever. I'll call it the Ziggy-Ziggler, which gets him the three count after about 3 minutes of action. ** 1/2.
Triple Threat for the U.S. Title is next with MVP vs Matt Hardy vs Kofi Kingston.
Triple H commercial.
Raw Rebound: One man standing match, Vince buy back and 3 Stages of Hell announcement.
The Bash card is recapped by the Raw announcers.
Josh Matthews interviews Kofi Kingston. Kingston says a true champion should always be tested and when it's all said and done he will still be your U.S. Champion. BOOM BOOM BOOM!
MVP vs Matt Hardy vs Kofi Kingston.
MVP out first, followed by Matt Hardy and then U.S. Champion Kofi Kingston. We are underway as Michael Cole sounds forced when stating the legitimate NWA/WCW lineage of the U.S. Title, the title held by such "superstars" like Ric Flair, Harley Race and Steve Austin. Kingston sent to the outside by Hardy to start. Hardy irish whip to the corner, clothesline and bulldog on MVP for a 1 count. Knees to the midsection countered by punches from MVP. Rebound belly to belly by MVP on Hardy. Face communication leads to a double team irish whip/drop kick combo and double suplex on Hardy. Pin broken up by MVP, he and Kingston argue and both get hit from behind. MVP knocked off the apron. Kneck breaker on Kofi and Hardy follows up with a leg drop. Knee to Kofi and dropkick to MVP by Hardy. Roll up by Kingston on Hardy gets a 2 count. Kingston works over Hardy in the corner. A unique arm drag out the corner gets a 2 count for Kofi. Hardy then stun guns Kofi on the top rope and MVP breaks up the pin at 2. Drop toe hold by MVP on Hardy with Kofi breaking up the pin as we head to commercial.
WGN Superstars commercial building up UMAGA. WHY?!
We're back with Hardy in control after a double clothesline on the good guys. Hardy full body slam and elbow drop for 2. Replay of dropkick by Kingston on MVP that happened during the break. Monkey flip and dropkick gets a 2 count as MVP breaks up the pin. It appears this is where Matt Hardy was injured if true as he rolled to the outside in pain. MVP with kicks, knees, a flap jack and a knee drop on Kofi. MVP with a submission attemptl. Kofi with the jump over cross over back elbow. Kingston runs the ropes and Matt Hardy low bridges him and snake eyes him on the barricade. Knees and a neckbreaker gets a 2 count for Hardy. Standing elbow off the middle rope for Hardy. Reversal into punches by MVP. MVP with the HHH face buster and "Ballin" elbow drop for a 2 count. Kofi with a kick from behind as MVP goes flying out the ring. Boom Boom legdrop on Hardy and MVP breaks up the pin at 2. Crucifix into a sunset flip is countered by a low short clothesline by MVP. Side effect on MVP gets a 2 count for Matt Hardy. Kofi comes back with kicks to the face and a high cross body on Hardy. Leap into the corner and punches for Kingston on Hardy. Kingston charges to the other corner and is met with a Yakuza kick from MVP. Twist of Fate by Hardy on MVP. MVP kicks out as Kofi looks for the save. Twist of Fate is countered into the Trouble in Paradise for the 1-2-3. *** 1/2 in about 15:00 including a commercial.
In closing: A really fun show to cap off a weird/somber day for our generation. Superstars continues to be a good show for the "wrestling" fan and I look forward to more weeks like this one. See you next week.
