We also have a piece on what may have been the most hated tag team in pro wrestling history, full coverage of the WWE Night of Champions show, a look at the debut of Dragon Gate USA on PPV and an update on the TNA internal situation involving Kurt Angle and Jeff Jarrett. The first issue is available right now on the web site to premium members. The second issue will be available tomorrow on the site. The lead story goes in-depth with the folding of the Affliction promotion, how it unraveled, the Josh Barnett test failure, background of drug testing fighters dating back to the original test failures and the irony of that. We look at the talks for a new opponent for Fedor Emelianenko, comments from Barnett on the test failure, and where four different pro wrestlers fit into the talks. We look at what caused Affliction to fail, when talks began with UFC, and how this affects UFC, where the Affliction fighters go, its affect on Strikeforce, and a look at the future of both Emelianenko and Barnett. Our other lead story is the most in-depth look at the biggest drawing cards over the last 100 years of history in pro wrestling. We look at what pro wrestlers were the biggest drawing card in the world the most number of years, including the surprising No. 1. We also look at the two most overlooked historical figures when it came to drawing big crows. We look at the biggest drawing tag teams in history, the biggest draws not in the Hall of Fame, as well as the wrestlers with the most number of years as top ten draws, and the biggest draws in history. We also have more on the TNA behind-the-scenes issues and the fallout of Jeff Jarrett being sent home, how it has affected creative, more on Jeff Jarrett and Karen Angle, and what would happen if TNA were to change the type of product it presents. We've got full coverage of WWE's Night of Champions, with a look at the title changes, decisions made and changed the day of the show, business notes on the show, match-by-match coverage with star ratings as well as poll results on the show. We look at the WWE talent situation, the death of former WWE developmental wrestler Damian Steele, a new tag team being talked about, confusing booking as well , an update on Gerald Brisco, and the story behind a commercial that is still airing. We also have a lot of developmental notes. We've got a feature on what may have been the most hated tag team in pro wrestling history, and a look at their actions and the gimmick in several territories where they became famous. We also have a look at the 2009 edition of the G-1 Climax tournament including the lineups for every show. We also have more on Ring of Honor moving to Monday night, as well as the first Dragon Gate USA PPV taping. We've got a look at the next two shows planned, how the first show did from a business standpoint, as well as match-by-match coverage and details of when and in what form the first PPV show will air. We also have a feature on AAA's second biggest show of the year. We have a look at what could be the final weekend of the career of Lance Storm, as well as his thoughts on it. We have all of our usual regular features including results of the major arena events over the past week, details on the television ratings of all the national shows as well as the major television show reviews. All subscriptions to the newsletter and web site for more than one month will include what is traditionally our most talked about and best selling issue of the year, the 2009 Hall of Fame issue. Starting this coming week in the Observer we are doing an historical look at the biggest draws in history and in looking at those numbers, a number of names come up as potentially overlooked candidates. We'll have more in that direction over the next few weeks as well as a Hall of Fame preview issue after all the ballots are cast but before the Hall of Fame issue itself. So several special issues are coming over the next six weeks. The Wrestling Observer ranges from 25,000 to 40,000 words covering pro wrestling and MMA all over the world. -- The four major announcements Dana White made today in his UFC conference call were: Dana also pretty much admitted that he's going to have to jump off the Mandalay Bay once they figure out how to do it. He did not give a buyrate figure, but the number we've heard from several sources now both inside and outside UFC is approximately 1.72 million buys. -- The entire press conference is available on the front page for subscribers, as is a breaking audio update with thoughts from Dave and I on the press conference, Fedor, and the booking changes in TNA. -- Those changes, by the way, are that agent Savio Vega and writer/agent Dutch Mantell have been canned, which speaks strongly to the phasing down of Jeff Jarrett, and that more cuts may be on the way. -- Bill Douglas of the CSAC sent out a press release confirming that Josh Barnett's B sample had also tested positive for steroids. -- The Rise And Fall of WCW -- Foley talks about some TNA disappointment here -- Billy Graham is now auctioning off the jacket he wore at the WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony. It's currently at $750. Auction is here. -- Bradley writes: 6 episodes of "WWE Superstars" from WGN America are now available for viewing on the Hulu website. The available episodes are from 5/21/09-7/23/09. The 7/30/09 episode will be up in a few days. So now all of the WWE programs except for Raw are available on Hulu. The link is here. -- Unless this is a BS story, Great Khali will be leaving for awhile because he's going to star in a reality show. Check it out. The list of "other WWE wrestlers" involved does raise some questions. -- Kurt Angle to Dancing with the Stars rumors -- A video clip of Shaq and Big Show from last Monday's Raw is on Youtube, and as of late Thursday night, is the #1, most popular video on the whole site. Thanks to Matt Daniels. -- Mitsuhiro Ishida replaces the injured Josh Thompson in his fight with Gilbert Melendez at the August 15th Strikforce show. Melendez's Interim Lightweight title will be on the line so it's a five-rounder. The first loss of Melendez's career was a decision to Ishida. -- Miguel Torres vs. Brian Bowles headlines the WEC Show on Versus next Sunday from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Vegas. Yes, the night after UFC. -- Jeremy Piven did another call-in appearance today on Philly's Preston and Steve Show and plugged The Goods and Entourage and made no mention of the Raw show he's guest GM of this Monday. -- Matt writes: I just called the Cape Cod Melody tent to check on the lineup for this Sunday's "C" show in Hyannis, Mass. Interestingly, the woman I spoke with had the following lineup: CM Punk and Rey Mysterio Jr vs. Edge and Chris Jericho, also appearing Evan Bourne, Umaga, Christian, Michelle McCool, and Jack Swagger. I doubt Umaga and Edge are going to be there for some reason. It's a shame that the actual venue has such inaccurate info. I could see children being very disappointed that certain wrestlers weren't on the card when the venue gives misleading info two days before the show. I understand that WWE doesn't give a shit about lineups, but it just seems like bad business. Someone from WWE can't pick up the phone and give them a more accurate lineup? The WWE website lists: CM Punk, Christian, John Morrison, Kane, The Great Khali, William Regal, Melina, and Michelle McCool as appearing. Clearly, a very different crew from what I was told on the phone today. I've been going to these shows since the first one in 1992 and can't imagine the lineup being so vastly different back in the day. It will be interesting to see what the actual show looks like. I'm anticipating a lousy, bump free show, but at least give me a lousy, bump free show with the wrestlers that are advertised. -- There is a look here at the Top Ten Ragdoll Moments in MMA history. -- Bound for Glory tickets go on sale to the public tomorrow for the October 18th show from the Bren Events Center at the University of California at Irvine. -- Steen & Generico vs. Briscoes have been added to the next set of ROH on HDNet tapings on August 14th and 15th in Philly. Petey Williams will also be returning in September and October. -- For those in the Seattle area, Eddie Bravo will be doing a four-hour seminar tomorrow at Ivan Salaverry's school on Saturday. Cost is $130 and more info is up here. Thanks to Mike Blinn. -- IWC presents NO EXCUSES 5, Saturday August 1st, 2009, Court Time Sports Center, 95 Enterprise Dr. Suite 100, Elizabeth, PA 15037. Special Autograph Session: 6:00 PM-8:00 PM Belltime: 8:00 PM. Paul Orndorff and Jimmy Snuka will both be appearing. -- River City Wrestling Saturday, August 1 at the San Antonio Events Center, 8111 Meadow Leaf (corner of 410 & Marbach). The doors open at 8 p.m. and the action starts at 8:30 p.m. TNA's Hernandez, Trina Michaels, and Mick Foley will all be appearing. -- Triple X Wrestling will be at The Jolly Beggar Club in Coventry, UK on August 9th. The card will include SHIMMER star Jetta vs Nikki Storm, Zack Sabre. Jr vs Jon Ryan, Dave Moralez vs Devilman and Majik vs Jekkel. -- Ed in San Antonio here has shows tonight with my co-author on Death of WCW RD Reynolds, and Sunday with Trina Michaels. |
