ECW TV Report for September 22, 2009 From Tulsa, Oklahoma The show began with the Abraham Washington Show. Washington did his usual shtick to start, complete with Tony Atlas’ nails-on-the-chalkboard level laughter. He introduced Sheamus and made cracks about Sheamus’ skin tone. Sheamus said he was honored to be on the set of Sanford & Son. Yes, I’m sure every 20-something Irishman would reference a US TV show that was last popular 35 years ago in that situation. Tony Atlas made a Lucky Charms joke. Sheamus tried to get in a promo against Shelton Benjamin here. Shelton came out next and Washington made hair dye jokes. They made an issue of Shelton “stealing” the win in a tag match which led to Sheamus saying Shelton comes from a place where stealing happens all the time. Yes, they used racial undertones in a (dreadful) comedy segment. On that note, Shelton responded to that by presenting a graphic family tree of Sheamus: Carrot Top, Bozo the Clown, Ronald McDonald & Pippi Longstockings. The two then brawled to end the segment. Yoshi Tatsu v. Paul Burchill Yoshi hit a sunset flip for a near fall and continued with a dropkick and clothesline to the floor. Yoshi hit a plancha onto Burchill and took the match inside. Katie Lea distracted for a bit which allowed Burchill to catch Yoshi up top. Burchill hit a fisherman’s superplex. Burchill hit a knee drop for a near fall. Burchill continued on the attack with a Samoan drop for another near fall. Burchill went to a chin lock and then slammed Yoshi down on his tailbone from that position. Yoshi powered out of the chin lock in the corner and ran the turnbuckles into a bridge. After a two count, Yoshi used a series of kicks before heading up top. Yoshi came down with a spinning heel kick (which didn’t look great) for a near fall. Burchill took the advantage and hit a knee drop off of the top rope and that got a two count. Yoshi then reversed an Irish whip and connected with his roundhouse kick for the pinfall. This was a very fun TV match. I know that WWE has been giving Paul Burchill more ring time then before, but at some point they have to seriously consider giving him a serious push here. Is there any evidence that he’s a less capable performer, independent of push, than guys like Cody Rhodes and Dolph Ziggler? Yoshi d. Burchill, Pin, 6:26, ***. Backstage, Zack Ryder cut a brief promo saying he was going to be the new ECW champion. Elsewhere, Gregory Helms tried to interview Katie Lea Burchill who blew him off. Burchill attacked Helms from behind and told his sister to stay away from him. So, that’s an apparent tease for Katie Lea to go with Hurricane. Ezekiel Jackson & Vladimir Kozlov v. Dustin Brady & Brandon Young Matt Striker mentioned that he met Danny Hodge before the show but said he would wager that Kozlov could take Hodge. He then compared Jackson & Kozlov to Andre the Giant and Big John Studd. Anyway, the heels showed off some power stuff while the jobbers took some nice bumps for them. Kozlov used his overhead throw on Brady and Jackson finished him with his uranage. After the match, Kozlov hit the final curtain on Brady. Jackson & Kozlov squash, 2:20. The announcers ran down the card for the pay-per-view. Regal is wrestling Goldust Thursday on Superstars. Regal said Goldust was a joke and that the title match tonight was a joke. ECW Championship Match: Christian v. Zack Ryder They exchanged strikes to start before Christian hit a huracanrana. Christian sent Ryder to the floor and hit a drop kick through the ropes. Christian came off the top rope with a body press before sending Ryder back inside for a cover. Ryder kicked out at two. Ryder then used a leg sweep to pick up a near fall of his own. After a commercial break, Ryder hit a back body drop for a near fall. Christian snuck in with a sunset flip off of the second rope. Christian followed with a drop kick. The two fought on the apron where Ryder managed to drop Christian on the stairs. Ryder then went to a body vice. Back standing, Ryder used a knee lift, front suplex onto the top rope and another knee lift with Christian lying on the top rope. Ryder went back to the body scissors. After a bit, Ryder tried something from the second rope but was caught. Christian hit a flapjack and clothesline off of that. Ryder tried for his leg lariat but Christian eluded him and hit a reverse DDT for a near fall. Christian hit a missile drop kick off of the middle rope and then a slingshot. Christian tried again for the sunset flip off of the middle rope but Ryder sat down for a near fall. Striker mentioned shades of Wembley Stadium because that was the finish in the epic Bret Hart-Davey Boy Smith match from Wembley in 1992. Christian then tried a missile dropkick from the top rope for another near fall. Ryder slipped out of a kill switch attempt and threw Christian to the apron. The champ tried to surprise Ryder coming off the top rope, but Ryder dodged him. Ryder scored with a leg lariat for a near fall. Ryder then tried a roll up in the corner, using the ropes for leverage, but Christian still kicked out. Christian went to the apron and snapped Ryder’s neck over the top rope. Christian came off the top rope with a twisting elbow and then used the kill switch for the pin. Excellent match. After the bout, William Regal walked to the ring and was about to cut a promo before Christian sucker punched him and sent Regal back up the ramp. Christian d. Ryder, Pin, 13:27, ***½. |
