After watching the Rock’s promo on Youtube, I have to say that I had a tough time watching it. Not because it was bad, it wasn’t. It was the most entertaining thing that has been on WWE programming all year. It is tough to watch, because you get extremely nostalgic. There is not one performer that is remotely in his league on their roster right now. I think it’s safe to say that there will never be a personality like that ever again, at least for a long time.

JOHN MCCARTHY
I have a hard time believing this Big John issue is a conspiracy by UFC/Dana. After all the public complaining about quality refs, especially in the last year, how do you not jump at the chance to bring back the best ref - or at least the single most experienced ref - in the world?
Yeah, I know about Dana's grudges. He's re-signed Tito, for Christ's sake. For much the same reason - he needed a warm body who could main event (ref well) and draw. I've often wondered, as respected as he is, why Big John isn't a more public face for MMA. I don't even remember what he said (was it about fighter salaries?)
Word I see is that people "aren't buying" the "we have too many refs" reason put forth by the NSAC.
In a perfect world, Big John comes back and immediately starts back up where he left off.
In the real world, you leave a job, someone is hired to replace you. NSAC has a budget. Maybe they can't afford to hire someone else right now. It's the end of the fiscal year. Maybe in January they can look at the budget. Maybe Referee X (Nick Patrick?) has contracts and they can't just be "dropped" no matter how much Dana or the internet wants them. If Dana white had this pull to blackball a ref, would Mazzagatti still have a job? Does anyone really know any of this?
I haven't seen you write about this that I recall so I'm not bitching at you...more TO you. I'm sick of people hearing news and doing the knee jerk reaction. Like Rampage. Seriously, people buy into this "retirement" thing? It's to get people on his side. It's to get people to plead with him to come back. Seriously, folks.
On another note (assuming you're still reading) looking forward to the Sciavello interview. I've become a big fan of his for his knowledge and insight, as he obviously knows his stuff. His old K-1 work is annoying for, well, overdoing it. I figure you've done the interview, but if not, maybe ask him if HDNet has asked him to tone down the "giving more shots than a bartender" and "he asked what his name was and he said Saturday" stuff. I love that stuff, but in moderation. I also think Guy Metzger is a fantastic partner for him as they play off each other well (hey, I'll be damned, Metzger's good for something). One wonders if Schiavello will corrupt Metzger like Rogan is corrupting Goldberg...

AL SHARPTON AND RAW
Guys -
Yeah, count me as one of the people boycotting Al Sharpton on RAW last Monday night. The episode was recorded by my DVR and will be promptly erased, unseen.
I have a long history of following Rev. Al, from a professional perspective. In the mid-1980s, I worked for a weekly newspaper chain in Queens, New York. Firsthand, I watched his involvement with some of the most disgusting news stories of that era.
In 1984, Michael Jackson reunited with his brothers for the VICTORY album tour. Rev. Al Sharpton held a press conference and demanded to know what the tour promoters were doing for "inner city youths" who could not afford the $25 ticket prices. The promoters quickly set up an arrangement with Sharpton to set aside blocks of tickets in Detroit, Philly, New York, and other urban stops. However, investigators discovered that people with scalped tickets were sitting in those blocks. Fewer children were being bussed to the concerts than promised by Sharpton's action committee. Sharpton's books were going to be audited on a Monday morning. On Saturday night, his offices were burned to the ground. No official investigation ever took place, since the evidence was destroyed.
Later in 1984, a (white) nut named Bernie Goetz decided to shoot anyone who mugged him on the subway. When four African-Americans approached him in an alleged robbery attempt, Goetz shot them. Sharpton was one of the voices declaring that Goetz was racist and demanded an inquiry.
In 1986, three African-Americans were chased through the predominantly white, Italian neighborhood of Howard Beach (a few blocks from where John Gotti lived). They were chased onto the Belt Parkway, a local highway, and one of them was struck and killed. A sad incident and a horrible indictment of the neighborhood. Sharpton soon led a rally through the area, which allowed the locals to hurl more racial invective at him.
Most people in my region know that Sharpton came to "full prominence" in 1987 after the Tawana Brawley incident. Basically, a black teenage girl spent the night with her boufriend. She was afraid of her stepfather, who had beaten her for doing the same thing in the past. Brawley spend days away from home, then went to a housing complex and let herself be "discovered" in a sleeping bag, where she had smeared racial epiteths on her body (upside down, so she could read what she was doing).
Sharpton and his cronies pounced on the case, which became a media circus as they demanded an investigation. They accused the Dutchess County police of a cover-up and zeroed in on officer Steven Pagones. A man with a fragile psyche, Pagones ultimately committed suicide and his family sued Sharpton and won - although Sharpton has never paid one penny.
There are more incidents that happened after that, but I was fully disgusted by Sharpton by that point and tried to spend as little time thinking about him as possible. Whenever he runs for public office, I run through this laundry list for anyone who even considers him as "viable."
I have not even gotten into his involvement in an FBI sting (where he took money) or his relentless politicizing small events onto a national stage in attempts to push his causes.
I know that WWE feels they HAVE to have guest stars every week now, but the week leading into a PPV should be reserved for WWE "legends" or celebs who "get it." Sharpton does not "get it" and is about as polarizing a figure as WWE has ever used. I cannot imagine a high viewing rate with his participation on this program. And I avoid any program he appears on.

Hi Dave
I felt compelled to write about RAW last night & overall..
Out of all the bad shows they have had over the past weeks, this one was by far the worst
Who's idea was it to have Rosa Mendez wrestle again. Doesnt Vince or the writers ever learn that she cant wrestle , sell or do anything to make a match halfway decent ?
That whole angle with Orton was poor writing. What I wouldve done is have Big Show and Jerricho beat down Cena - have Orton come out, lower the cage and have all 3 beat him down and have MVP & Henry run in...followed by Legacy and then DX and have a total melee in the cage. Having Cena rise from the dead and look strong on top of the cage while Orton just lays there might make the fans happy but if it wont help the buy rate. If these guys hate each other, wouldnt Cena want to throw Orton off the cage. I dont get these postures where the guys just stand over their hated foe...
The Al Sharperson thing was a waste. They didnt bother with him trying to announce a match using the names of the wrestlers, since he probably doesnt know them and had no confidnece in h im making a match..furthermore than man is a left wing democrat which is strange since Vince is a Republican - that alone made it even stranger. Maybe thats why Vince didnt give Al all that much to do. Guys like Vince and other rich right wingers help molded the country to what it is today.
Even the DX segement lost steam comparing themselves to the Incredible Hulk. Quite honestly if the Incredible Hulk existed I would have wished he would 'Smash' everyone on this show.
This show needs new blood, new storylines , new angles...things that made the show great in 1998-2001. It is like the 21st century traveling circus like it was in the 1980s...I still remember that angle where the New Age Outlaws pushed a garbage can with Funk and Foley in it over the edge of the stage...hot angles, things that get all the fans excited.
I think the time has come to unify all the brands - Ive said this for years...the depth wouldnt be such a problem and fueds wouldnt have to last longer than they need to because there would be more on the roster to feud with...
I think that the ROH guys should come in as outsiders and try some new angle..Sports Entertainers vs. Professional Wrestlers....the wrestling aspect is so far gone at this point that its not funny. Im worried that Danielson might be asked to become another Eugene or a Shockmaster or something awful...RAW has no other wrestling promotion to compete with on Mondays so they can reel off an entire string of bad shows and that is what they are doing...Its not like TNA is really serious competition. Imagine if UFC were to air on Monday against RAW....watch things change again.
I hope you agree with some of my thoughts..Have a great day..

I am absolutely disgusted with WWE for having that scumbag Al Sharpton host raw last night. I would not have watched it live anyway with my Cowboys playing on MNF but normally I would dvr it and watch it later. Since WWE had that sorry son of a bitch Sharpton to host, I am done with WWE for the near future. My interest had been waning anyway but this pushes me over the edge.

K-1
I’m usually not one to email you guys, perhaps this is the start (bad for you LOL). First off I love what you and Bryan have created over the years. You alone have always been an insightful person to world of wrestling and other combat sports. So I’ll cut to the chase, THANK YOU for praising the K-1 event and Michael "The Voice" Schiavello’s skills and what he brings to the table. He truly does make EVERY K-1 event special and like you said if that was your first K-1 event you ever viewed; you left believing you knew everything. I personally think K-1 is the most entertaining Combat sport atm. I’m a huge wrestling mark, both mainstream and on the indy circuit, and love MMA. But K-1 never seems to disappoint me.
Anyways, thanks for the rave review of the show and of Mike. It was a great event and I’m happy to hear you guys talk about it! Keep up the great work!
