Thumbs Up for WEC's show on 10/10/09....It's a good thing your site reminded me about the show as I probably would have missed it and that would have been a shame as it was another great WEC show.
Best Fight: Donald Cerrone vs. Ben Henderson....wow, top 5 fight of the year easily and if it was a fight with bigger stars it would probably be #1. Best fight I've seen since Faber-Brown II. Glad to see Henderson win. He's Roger Huerta-cool when caught in submissions.
Worst Fight: Raphael Assuncao vs. Yves Jabouin Jonathan Sarpolis
| Dave, Big thumbs up to WEC 43! I actaully missed the first half of the show (hockey/family obligations) but got home in time to see the second half highlighted by the war between Donald Cerrone vs. Ben Henderson which was no doubt the match of the night. Henderson's heart was unbelivable remaining calm and even giving the thumbs up while being stuck in some REDICULOUS submission situations - I was actaully shocked when they announced Henderson took the decision as I thought Cerrone had pulled the fight out in the last round (as he impressively seemed to gain momentum as the fight wore on). Both men truly deserve their doubled fight of the night bonuses. Varner must be feeling a little nervous and some pains in his hand with these two breathing down his neck. Dan Ball Getzville, NY PS - Any word from Cerrone post fight about his words with the referee during round 2 (I think as it seemed like he might have caught/stunned Henderson from underneath and thought he KOed him as his head was on the mat while on top)??? Also, hoping that WEC can finish 2009 or start 2010 with a bang and deliver Torres vs. Mizugaki II as I'm sure both are anxous for a shot at the Bantamweight Championship in 2010... Three or four thumbs up. GREAT card (even with no KOs).
Fight of the Night and Possibly Year: Henderson vs. Cerrone
Worst fight: none
KO of the Night: n/a
Sub of the Night: Probably the 10 or 12 Cerrone couldn't finish Henderson with, but give it to Mackens Semerzier for upsetting Fabiano
DirecTV ot no DirecTV, the Little Zuffa Promotion That Could Strikes Again.
Damacio Page opens the TV subbing Will Campuzano in a fight that crammed 3 rounds worth of action into 1:02.
Yves Jabeuin from GSP's camp in Montreal gives a terrific account of himself vs. contender Raphael Assuncao, although I can't see how he got one of the judges' votes, in an excellent technical and action fight.
In a dark match, Miguel Torres trainee Semerzier shocks the world by quickly triangling #1 contender and BJJ ace Waggney Fabiano. One of the upsets of the year.
Dave Jansen takes a UD over Richard Crunkilton in a pretty good battle of clones scrap. Both need better cardio.
In another dark fight, Scotty Jorgensen bulls right through Noah Thomas in short order.
Cerrone vs. Henderson was just amazing. Henderson wins the first three rounds with superior wrestling and positional G&P, each by a wider margin than the one before, but Cerrone is so dangerous from the bottom he has Henderson in some trouble and you're holding your breath watching it. Then Cerrone turns the tide in the 4th and 5th, walking through Henderson's TDs and scoring with his excellent Muay Thai and just transitioning fron one ridiculous looking sub to another. Henderson's limbs looked to be bent into a pretzel several times but he gets out of everything. It's like the guy is made out of india rubber instead of bones. I had the 4th a 10-8 and the fight a draw, but the judges obviously agreed about the rounds and made everything 10-9. Just an amazing, fast paced, dramatic, burner of a fight that goes on the FotY Short List IMO. Crimson Mask
