Ring of Honor on HDNet
November 9, 2009
By Paul Collins

- Austin Aries comes to the ring to start the show with a promo.  He
says there are different kinds of people.  He says there are champions
like Nigel McGuinness and Bryan Danielson, and then there are the
champions of champions, the dynasties like himself.  Then there are
people who are good but not great like Roderick Strong, Kenny Omega,
Colt Cabana, and especially Tyler Black.  He invites Black out to the
ring to oversee the “A-Double, L-Double” Lucky Lottery.  Tyler pulls a
long, black sheet of paper out of the hat, and when he holds it up to
his face, Aries quickly pulls out a lighter and lights the sheet on
fire, burning Black’s face.  This was really well done considering how
quickly it had to happen to be realistic.

- American Dragon’s Top 5 Moments for this week is his match with
Takeshi Morishima from Manhattan Mayhem II on August 25, 2007.
Danielson goes over how he has his retna detached and his eye socket
fractured very early on in the match.  He said it felt like a great
accomplishment to get through the match even with his injuries.

- Mike Hogewood is very upset about what Aries did to Tyler Black,
while Dave Prazak plays the good heel and tries to change subjects,
but Hogewood reitierates his anger!  Prazak does eventually change
subjects about the main event between the American Wolves and Roderick
Strong & Bryan Danielson.

MATCH ONE: Super Smash Brothers (Player Uno & Player Dos) v. Kevin
Steen & El Generico
-        Steen & Generico control the match early on, Generico with his lucha
style and Steen with his power.  They cut the ring off and wear down
Dos.  Finally, there is a hot tag to Uno.  Dos regains his composure
and hits a flying body press over the top rope to the outside on
Steen, and Uno gets a close fall on Generico.  Another close call
after a double team broken up by Steen.  Steen & Generico then get Uno
out of the picture and finish off Dos with a Package
Piledriver/Brainbuster combo.  **

-        If the point was the put the Smash Brothers over as a threat in the
tag team division, it was well done as they got a couple of close
falls.  If it was just to put on an entertaining opener, that was also
achieved.

- Tyler Durden is backstage with The Embassy of Prince Nana, Joey Ryan
and “Dirty” Ernie Osiris.  Nana cuts a promo on Grizzly Redwood,
saying that after last week when they almost cut off his beard, Ernie
was injured and can’t compete.  But if he wants a shot at The Embassy,
they will still put Ernie’s beard on the line in a match against Ryan.
Of course, this was just implied, as he never mentioned Ryan by name.

MATCH TWO: Bobby Dempsey v. Chris Hero w/ Shane Hagadorn
-        Early story was Hero tried to knock Dempsey down, but not being able
to.  Hagadorn distracted Dempsey allowing Hero to hit an elbow to the
back of Dempsey’s head, finally getting him down.  Later in the match,
Hagadorn distracted Dempsey again, giving Hero recovery time as he was
down in the corner.  Dempsey went for a running somersault into the
corner, but Hero moved.  He hit an elbow to Dempsey, followed by the
Death Blow (roaring elbow to the temple) for the win. *

-        Eddie Kingston came out on the ramp after the match with a mic and
said that Hero is great, that he’s been tearing through the
competition, and that maybe he (Kingston) should be more like Hero.
He walked away after that, leaving what he said vague.  Hopefully they
follow up on this in the weeks to come.
- After a commercial break, Jim Cornette cut his first promo, saying
that he isn’t about sports entertainment, comedy or a dog and pony
show.  He is about professional wrestling and that RoH is the perfect
place for that.  He also says that despite his controversial ways,
there is no controversy here.  If he likes you, he likes you.  If he
hates you, he hates you.  He says there is no limit to what he, RoH
and HDNet can do, so enjoy the ride.  Decent start, but I know there
is some great stuff to come with him in the future.

MATCH THREE: Sal Rinauro v. “Skullkrusher” Rasche Brown
-        His promos may be lame, but Brown is a massive human being.  SQUASH!
This match was designed to show off Brown’s power and dominance.  He
used a torture rack into a Burning Hammer for the victory.  No stars.
If they are looking for a monster, he could fit the bill.  We will see
when he has to go longer than a couple of minutes.

- They push the main event for next week: Danielson’s final match in
RoH against Roderick Strong!

MAIN EVENT: American Wolves (Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards) v.
Roderick Strong & Bryan Danielson
-        Non-title match.  “Thank you, Dragon” chants from the crowd.  The
Code of Honor was NOT upheld!

-        Solid chain wrestling from Danielson and Richards to start things
off. The Wolves get control on Dragon, taking turns wearing him down.
Dragon had flashes of a comeback until he finally got the hot tag,
allowing Strong to clear house.  Wolves eventually regain control,
getting a double submission attempt…which a few minutes later was done
on them by Strong & Danielson.

-        Total back and forth match after that as momentum changed a lot.
Wolves tried a Doomsday Device, but Dragon pushed Richards to the
floor, then follows up with a dive through the ropes to the outside.
Strong got a close fall on Edwards.  As Strong and Edwards kept
fighting, Richards brought his tag team belt into the ring, but
referee Todd Sinclair took it from him, turning his back on Richards
who gave a low blow to Strong as he tried to suplex Edwards off the
top rope.  They turned that into a power bomb/lungblower combo on
Richards for a close two count.  Edwards put Strong into a single-leg
crab for the tap out as Richards cut off Dragon. ***

- They pushed the main event for next week between Dragon and Strong
again as they closed the show.

- This was a lot better than last week.  The pacing was better and the
main event was really, really good.  It seems like they are finally
starting to go somewhere with their storylines, and Cornette being
involved should help.  See you next week!
