The Shooters Paradise - Inside Pro Wrestling In Las Vegas~!

It's not everyday that you can interview a former WCW Hardcore Champion, let alone work with one. In this special edition, we switch things up from the MMA news and notes, and dive into an Interview I conducted today with former Pro Wrestler Reno, who pulls no punches in this exclusive Interview.

Rick Cornell started his career as a kickboxer after a high school wrestling career. He eventually decided to become a pro wrestler and enrolled at the WCW Power Plant where he was trained by Paul Orndorff. He first appeared on WCW Saturday Night in 1999 under his real name but was soon renamed Reno and put in the Natural Born Thrillers with Shawn Stasiak, Mark Jindrak, Chuck Palumbo, Johnny the Bull, Sean O'Haire and Mike Sanders. They briefly had Kevin Nash as their coach until they turned on him. Cornell had a brief feud with Big Vito while he was apparently dating Vito's sister Marie. In an angle twist, Reno revealed in an interview that Maria was his sister as well, making he and Vito brothers. Eventually the two became a team until Reno eventually turned on Vito. When WCW was sold to Vince McMahon in 2001, Cornell was sent to Heartland Wrestling Association and he wrestled in 2002 for World Wrestling All-Stars after being let go by World Wrestling Entertainment He retired from wrestling in 2002.

Sawyer: You enroll in the Power Plant and train with Paul Orndorff. How crazy is this guy?

RENO: I wasn't really trained all that much by him actually, he was basically the head of the Power Plant. Paul was great, a hilarious guy. You knew within the first five minutes of talking to him which medication he was on that day, whether it was Ritalin or if he was snorting lines off his desk. Either way I got along with him so I didn't care.

Sawyer: You beat the Wall in October 2000 to win the WCW Hardcore Title?

RENO: Yeah, he was a very good friend of mine. He passed away about three years ago after suffering a heart attack wrestling in Japan. That was a bad day.

Sawyer: Who did you drop the strap to?

RENO: Crowbar.

Sawyer: Your finisher was " The roll of the dice". Tell us about the story with Goldberg over that move.

RENO: That was funny. When I first started as a character on Thunder, they had me billed as one of the Nitro Girls boyfriend with Shane Douglas and Billy Kidman, back when they had their Viagra on a poll match. Shane pulled me aside and told me what I would be doing in my match that night. So I wrestled and hit the move and pummeled the guy and got out of the ring. When I cam back through the curtain, Goldberg was waiting for me, and pulled me aside and told me not to do that move anymore. I told him I was still going to, as it was a move I came up with from back in my free style days, which is basically just an inverted Gator Roll. He made me show him how I do it, so I did the move on him, and he said it was similar to the move he does. It was funny. Jarrett and Nash were right there laughing their ass off. It cooled down and we actually became friends after that. I wrestled him shortly after and it went like three minutes, Bill's shoulder was fucked up, and I told him what ever he wanted to do was fine. He actually gave me some offense in the match. After it was over, I walked back in the dressing room and Nash was there and said, " What the hell, what are you guys friends now, you lasted longer than I did".

SAWYER: What was your memories of your feud with Vito?

RENO: Vito is a great guy, but he didn't enjoy being taken over by one of the new guys. He had been in the business ten years. He did not like putting me over at all. He was very tough to work with.

Sawyer: One of the favorites here on this website is DDP. Any good stories on Page? What were your feelings towards Page?

RENO: I don't think anyone had any feelings for Page but Page. He was his own biggest fan...

Sawyer:...really...He was close to Bischoff during that time....

RENO: They are closer than you think....

Sawyer: I'm afraid to ask....

RENO: They use to share the same girl....

Sawyer: Please don't tell me they shared who I think you are going to say....

RENO: Yes, they shared Kimberly.

Sawyer: Oh God, Page will not be happy to read this.

RENO: It was pretty much known...All the boys knew this. DDP liked watching. Hey, it got him up the ladder.

Sawyer: This is news to me. How was DDP with the boys in the back?

RENO: It was OK, except for Scott Steiner. I was there when they had their backstage fight. It was ugly. Scott just went off on him. Basically, he had no respect to Page, because he knew what was going on and how he got where he was, and how she was and the things they were into. It made him sick.

Sawyer: Kevin Nash was a "coach" of yours. Tell us about your relationship with Nash.

RENO: A lot of the stories in WCW would come from what was really going on. Kevin is one of the coolest guys you could ever meet. Funny as hell. All we did was party. He was like the teacher and we were like the students.

Sawyer: There was always talk of his relationship with Hogan. What was the deal with that?

RENO: It's no mystery that there was no love loss between them. Hogan was for Hogan, and Nash was for the boys, plain and simple.

Sawyer: We better get back to work bro. Thanks for taking time out.

RENO: Thanks Mike.
