TUF 5, Episode 4 recap PDF Print E-mail

By Matt White

Once again, another recap of this fine, fine show. Honestly, if you haven’t been watching, you really should. Last week was really entertaining. I wonder what is in store for this week…….

Recap of Diaz fight. They claimed this was the best fight in Ultimate Fighter HISTORY. It wasn’t but it was definitely better than every fight from season 4 (even the finals).

Wayne is not cutting it in training. Basically, he’s lacking in every area. He can’t even do the endurance drills correctly. Jens was getting pissed at him. Jens said he’s got to step up and prove himself. Wayne said he wasn’t going to quit. They showed him having trouble with a timing bag. That was great.

Gabe said he wanted to fight Wayne because it would be the easiest fight. Gabe is such a tool. His attitude was, “Well, someone’s gotta do it.” Once again, everyone thought Gabe was a complete poseur for saying that. Earlier in the season, he claimed he would fight anyone and now he wanted to fight the weakest guy. Add to that, they were mad because he didn’t bring it up with the team, he just brown nosed with BJ (the coach, not the act).

Brandon wanted to fight next but he was not training hard and was somewhat overweight. New side of Jens tonight, I guess because he chewed out Brandon for sand bagging his training by making up excuses for his injury. Manny told Jens that Jens is struggling with his weight. Supposedly, Brandon wasn’t even under 168. He told Corey to be ready. YEAH!!!

Brandon claimed he was a natural at 170 so getting down to 155 was hard for him. This is the part of MMA that annoys me the most. Most guys don’t fight at their natural weight, they drop down a weight class or two to get an advantage. Some of the more dominant fighters like Matt Hughes, Rich Franklin, Chuck Liddell, heck, anyone drops down at least one weight class, resulting in a lot of sauna time to cut weight which could result in severe dehydration or even death. Anyways, Brandon was just doing what everyone else did (kind of like all those guys in the ‘80s who took steroids to improve their chances in pro wrestling) and spent a lot of time in the sauna.

Marlon (“Mr. Indestructible”)(really) claimed he fought in “hundreds” of street fights. He’s kind of like that guy who brought the ninja costume to scout camp. You know, just a total poseur (as much as it pains me to use that word twice in this review). Everyone thought he was full of it. I did too when he said he fought over five guys at once in a bar. Sounds like somebody has been watching too many Steven Seagal videos…..

Fight announcement time: Brandon Melendez vs. Andy Wang. Jens must have trusted him to make weight, I guess. Gabe, who trained frequently with Andy, said the biggest problem with him is his fondness for brawling. BJ pleaded with him to take Brandon down and tap him. Andy said, for him, MMA is about the “mists of battle” meaning he loves being in the midst of a fight. Really meaning, he’s gonna brawl and lose the fight.

Brandon weighed in wearing a thong. After this and last weeks colon cleanse, this show is getting kind of gay. Well, Brandon made weighed and started pigging out on food. He said that he would be at 170 for the fight thus, being far heavier than Andy.

Team Pulver went in for training and they noticed Matt Hughes of all people mopping the mats! Talk about keeping it real. Jens brought in Matt to refresh the guys. Oh boy. Matt said him and Jens were family. Of course, Matt ran them hard in training.

After seeing the personality pieces on both Andy and Brandon, it made it hard for me to see either guy lose. Of course, this all led to……

The fight: Brandon nailed Andy with a punch to the chin, putting him down and Andy responded with brawling a little. Here we go. Brandon was quite larger than Andy. Brandon totally dominated the standing, hitting Andy with some good shots. Andy kept on trying to throw this combination ending with a lazy high kick but he never even came close to nailing it. Brandon continued to dominate the stand up on the inside. Before the round ended, Brandon nailed Andy with a nice high kick of his own.

Jens told Brandon that Andy was just going to keep running and throwing overhand punches (which he pretty much did for most of the first round). Much of the same for the first minute. BJ was screaming for Andy to take Brandon down. Well, Andy tried but had no luck. He tried another takedown (after losing another stand up war) but ended up with a clinch on the fence and eventually ended up back in the middle trading punches. This continued for the rest of the fight, leading to Brandon taking the fight by unanimous decision. Well, Andy brawled and lost. This really pissed BJ off (even making fun of him when he cried after the fight). Actually, BJ’s closing interview made him come off really cold. Worst episode so far but that isn’t a bad thing. This was just an average show, nothing horrible. Next episode is Corey versus Gabe~!~!~!~!~!
