PWG report from last night PDF Print E-mail

www.WrestleMag.com

Within 300 were in attendence at the Burbank National Guard Armory for a Sunday afternoon of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla action known as “Roger Dorn Night.” In the morning, those who checked the message boards knew that because of travel delays, especially with the majority of the roster coming from two straight nights of Ring of Honor action on the East Coast, the show would be delayed for at least an hour and would therefore start at 6pm. Which was fine to some since PWG shows in the past usually started late any way. Bell rang at 6pm. No slushie machine tonight.

Ring announcer Jon Ian starts making mention of the fact that there were flight delays and some of the scheduled talent might actually not make it to the show. This brings out Davey Richards, who says that since American Dragon was busted open last night he should not be allowed to wrestle and therefore have Davey challenge El Generico tonight. American Dragon comes out, staples clearly visable at the crown of his head, and says that since he’s The Best in the World, he doesn’t mind if the match is made into a triple-threat. Kevin Steen comes out, miffed that Davey wants to back out of their match and instead go straight for the title. He suggests a Fatal Four-Way. PWG Commissioner Dino Winwood comes out says that it should be the champ who decides what match he wants. Generico comes out and whispers to Dino with all kinds of arm and leg movements that essentially result into him saying “Yes” to a Fatal Four-Way. As everyone leaves, Davey jumps Generico and leaves after nailing the Tiger Driver.

1. Bino Gambino vs. Top Gun Talwar

Before the match got started, Bino offered a truce since the two were former partners by giving Top Gun some cocaine. Top Gun gives it a shot, but it has a sudden effect that allows Bino to take over. A pretty typical Top Gun match from this point on, so right away it’s not quite a winner. Some comedy here and there, like the fact that Top Gun came out to the theme from “Jurassic Park” as opposed to the “Danger Zone” song from the movie “Top Gun,” but a match that’s completely skipable. Bino needs work. His in-ring skills are getting there, like rolling through Top Gun’s diving tackle into a Single Leg Boston Crab, but his personality and character is getting old real fast. Bino gets the win after countering a second Chipotle into an Ace Crusher -Knee Smash combo.

Winner: Bino Gambino

2. TJ Perkins vs. Tony Kozina

Tony Kozina is a name that those who have been with PWG from the beginning know. He’s appeared in three or four shows, his last being way back on May 22, 2004 for “44 Ways to Kill You with a Pimento” losing to TJ when he was still the masked Puma. Even fewer know that he trained Davey Richards, especially as the WCW Power Plant was closing. He’s better known as The Canadian Cougar in Full Impact Pro and a former 2-time NWA Junior Heavyweight Champion. Barely anyone did anything for him when he came out. By the end of the night, he was the star of the show. TJ and Tony started with a nice chain of technical wrestling. Then Tony started to get some attention when he leaped off the top and gave TJ a hurricanrana out of the ring. Not off the apron, out of the ring! Later, he dropkicked TJ out on the floor, buried him under a pile of chairs and a Top Rope Con Hilo. This guy was making a statement. In hitting the move, he also hurt himself and was thus selling the back of his neck. The match was just hot by then and captivated every until it finished with TJ hitting a Superplex for the win. Tony got a standing ovation and “Please come back!” chants. Davey could be seen peeking through the curtain to watch his mentor wrestle. **** and Match of the Night.

Winner: TJ Perkins

3. Human Tornado w/Candice LaRae vs. Ronin

This was supposed to be Tornado vs. Super Dragon, but in a rarity Dragon no showed. Might have to do with flight delays or something, but Ronin ended up taking his spot. Match turned out to be a fun little contest, thanks primarily to Tornado’s continuing growth as a top heel. Whether it’s forcing Candice to take the brunt of the punishment or finding other methods to cheat, Tornado is coming out better and better as the abusive pimp who will do anything to get his way. The finish sees Tornado commanding Candice to do the double chair trick, one to distract the ref and the other to hit Ronin. Only Candice didn’t Ronin and instead hit Tornado, allowing Ronin to nail the Death Valley Driver and score the win. Post match, Tornado demands Candice to enter the ring. She attempts to gain an extra measure of revenge by low blowing him, but she forgot that his balls are made of steel. Tornado immediately Pimp Slaps her and then hits the Tornado Plex. Just as he’s about to leave, he comes back in and gives her another Tornado Plex. Looks like Candice needs a Hero…

Winner: Human Tornado

4. PWG World Tag Team Championship

Pac and Roderick Strong © vs. The Havana Pitbulls of Ricky Reyes and Rocky Romero

For the first time since early February, the PWG Tag Team titles are being defended. The two teams go forth in putting together a good, fun tag match that seems to continue what DDT4 last month provided. Mid-way through, Pac attempted a running corkscrew dive onto Rocky on the floor. Rocky moved and Pac landed on his feet, but he began selling his left knee. Seems like it’s a combination of a work and him tweeking the knee a little. Nevertheless, the match continued and the Pitbulls smelled blood. Pac sold the leg very well. Moments later, however, came the night’s biggest impact. While Rocky is working over Pac’s leg, Roderick steps in and chops Rocky’s back. It wasn’t just any chop. It was the chop of death. It was LOUD! And Rocky was in PAIN! So much pain that he immediately dropped and rolled out of the ring, Ricky just as quickly jumping in to take over. But by God was that just a whole new level of hurt. Roderick looked quite proud of himself and even Ricky was going “Oh my God” and chuckling with the rest of us. We all screamed when it happened and were left in a state of disbelief. The match continues on as if normal, going through the motions until Pac got the win hitting a Corkscrew Shooting Star Press on Rocky. Rocky immediately rolled out of the ring afterward and stayed down to collect himself. There was this visible little bump hand imprint on his back with a little bleeding. Roderick’s hands are lethal and he’s a sick man to be in this business. I love it! Oh, and the match itself was really good.

Winners: Pac and Roderick Strong, Still PWG World Tag Team Champions

Intermission, which actually runs a lot longer than the fifteen minutes Jon said it was supposed to be. It clocks in at 8pm before the show continues. It’s going to be a short one tonight. But it’s been good thus far.

5. Joey Ryan vs. Tyler Black

When Kiss 2 Kill of Jimmy Jacobs and Tyler Black made a one-time appearance in PWG during All-Star Weekend IV, they wrestled in a showstealing match with Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin. Many wanted to see them make a return. After Jimmy was injured and forced to sit out for months, many decided that Tyler should be given a singles shot. Thus, Tyler makes his anticipated return against “The Technical Wizard.” A fun little match that certainly made Tyler look good enough that he’d be welcomed back should he return in the future. A great comedic moment took place when Tyler got Joey to bounce back and forth off the ropes for what seemed like forever until he ran out of breath. Joey went for his inhaler, but Tyler snags it and we have a chase that should have been accompanied with the Benny Hill theme. Half-way through the chase, Tyler drops the inhaler into the front of his trunks. Soon enough, Joey is very much out of breath and Tyler gives him back his inhaler. Joey gets a few breaths until he realizes where the inhaler was previously. Match continues with the well-crafted wrestling we’ve come to expect when heel Joey is involved. Finish sees Joey going for the pin after nailing Tyler with the Super Kick, but Scorpio Sky appears and offers enough distraction for Tyler to regain strength. Tyler and Joey battle to get a suplex with Tyler winning and nailing a Fisherman Driver for the win. Good match from start to finish.

Winner: Tyler Black

Post-match, Joey demands something be done about Scorpio as the latter lost a “Loser Leaves PWG” match at the beginning of the year. Dino then decides that, while Scorpio cannot have a sanctioned match in PWG, Joey and Scorpio will still face off at the Fourth Anniversary Show. They will do battle in a Non-Sanctioned Street Fight. Joey says that he’ll accept, but if Scorpio loses he cannot be within 100 feet of a PWG show. Scorpio agrees to the stipulation, only if there’s the addition in that if Scorpio wins he’s back on the PWG roster. He cuts a quick promo on Joey before leaving.

6. Arrogance of Chris Bosh and Scott Lost w/Jade Chung vs. The Young Bucks of Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson

The Young Bucks are brothers who just got started not too long ago. They’ve been making so noise in other promotions, prompting them to get a shot in PWG against the elite tag team. Let me note right off the bat that this is the shortest match of the night, something we were not expecting. It was within or under ten minutes. With that said, what they did in ten minutes was pretty nice. The Young Bucks certainly showed themselves as talented athletes and were quite impressive. Arrogance did their thing as usual and it was as enjoyable as ever. The finish saw Arrogance get the win after doing the Bosh backbreaker into Lost Sharpshooter making I believe Nick tap out. Would like to see The Young Bucks again, if only to see if they can get the heat in a longer match.

Winners: Arrogance

7. PWG World Heavyweight Championship - Fatal Four-Way Match

El Generico © vs. American Dragon vs. Davey Richards vs. Kevin Steen All four involved arrived after competing in two nights of ROH wrestling. No doubt this is to accomidate how tired they probably were and to keep Dragon from going alone with the injury to his head. They go by the Four Corner rules in which two are in the ring and the other two must wait in corners to be tagged in until it goes all out in the end. The three challengers take turns beating down the champ in the beginning before it reaches the point of utter chaos. Under the circumstances it was a very good match, though many were extremely pumped for a Generico/Dragon singles encounter. All four men fought with all the strength they had left from the weekend and moreso in keep up the importance of the belt. Memorable moments from the match include Dragon breaking up a pin with the Diving Headbutt despite the risk of reopening the cut, Davey suicide dive on Generico at one end and Dragon suicide dive on Steen at the other, and Generico finishing off Davey and getting the win after nailing the corner running kick and connecting the Top Rope Brainbustah. Nothing really wrong with the match, as it was very good with all four wrestled their butts off. A worthy championship match indeed.

Winner: El Generico, Still PWG World Heavyweight Champion

No announcement on the next Battle of Los Angeles entrant, which is expect to happen tomorrow. The only thing confirmed for the Fourth Anniversary Show in July is that it will include the Non-Sanctioned Street Fight between Joey Ryan and Scorpio Sky with the stipulations involving Scorpio’s permanent future in PWG. They don’t even announce a date, probably because they still need to figure it out what with some of the guys going to Dragon Gate’s WrestleJAM 2 tour. Generico’s win pretty means that he will begin to defend the belt in other parts of the world beginning on July 1 against Jonny Storm during 1PW’s “Know Your Enemy 2007″ weekend in Doncaster, England. No confirmation, but there’s a chance he could defend the title in Dragon Gate during the WrestleJAM 2 tour. If Roderick Strong is able to take part in the tour, there’s a chance the tag titles could also be defended as Pac is already confirmed.

A pretty good show, despite running really short. The stand-out was definitely Tony Kozina and the incredible performance he had in his showstealer with TJ Perkins. Both championship matches were really good and worthy bouts. A nice debut for The Young Bucks, though we’d like to see them compete in a longer match next time. Good singles showing for Tyler Black. Nothing too bad aside from the opening match. Information on the Fourth Anniversary Show to be announced in the weeks to come. {plug}
