They opened up saying that they expect Chuck Liddell to win tonight and face Wanderlei Silva in December. That's worrisome. 1. Thiago Tavares vs. Tyson Griffin. Good round after a slow start. Probably Tyson's round. Randy is there in his corner, which is always a benefit. Hell of a round. Thiago stunned him with a shot and nearly got an armbar and a rear-naked choke, but he also got dropped on his head near the finish. Another fun round and it's going to the judges. I suspect they'll give it to Thiago but it could go either way. Crowd wants Tyson to have it. And they got it. Tyson won the decision with two 29-28s and a 30-27. The 30-27 had to be Cecil Peoples. Not sure how you give him the second round, but oh well. 2. Kazuhiro Nakamura vs. Lyoto Machida. Lyoto's round. Not horribly boring. Nakamura went for a bunch of takedowns and I think screwed every single one up. Not his night so far. With the exception of one takedown, all Machida in round two as well. Should be an easy unanimous decision for Lyoto after three rounds. Yup. 3. Jon Fitch vs. Diego Sanchez. Diego sprinted in at the bell for a takedown, but failed. He finally got it but was almost immediately swept, and Fitch spent the rest of the round on top pounding on him. Diego tried a few submissions but couldn't get them. Diego couldn't do a damn thing with him in the second. He'd get a takedown and almost immediately lose it, and never came close with any submission attempts. Fitch has bloodied him up with shots. Diego came close with a guillotine and a triangle, but Fitch escaped both times and dominated much of the round. I'd be surprised if Fitch didn't get the decision. Yup, but it was split. Fitch got a 30-27 and a 29-28, and one judge said 29-28 Diego. Someone must have given Sanchez major credit for his failed submissions. 4. Forrest Griffin vs. Mauricio Shogun Rua. A great and very close first round. As Roddy Piper would say, they were up and they were down. Big ovation and loud "FORREST!" chants. Forrest got busted open with an elbow in the second. The pace was such that Rua ended up utterly exhausted. Forrest totally dominated the second half of the round. We're onto the third. So anyway, as I asked a few weeks back, WHO ARE YOU TO DOUBT RANDY COUTURE. Forrest Griffin not only won this fight, he CHOKED OUT SHOGUN RUA. Yes. An amazing performance, and obviously the biggest win over Forrest's career. 5. Chuck Liddell vs. Keith Jardine. This was five minutes of both men trading wild shots. Fun. Second round was a battle. Jardine got a knockdown early and probably landed more shots, so technically I think he won this round. Chuck's body was covered with welts, but he also busted Jardine up by the eye and the ear and Jardine was bleeding everywhere. We're onto the third. JARDINE WINS THE DECISION. Two judges gave it to him 29-28 and one judge gave it to Liddell 29-28 (?). We need a shot of Dana right now. Should be a hell of a Bryan & Vinny Show tonight. We'll be joined by Mike Coughlin to run down this show in great detail with in-depth thoughts on all the fights, all the upsets, and where we go from here. Should be up by midnight PST. Thanks for joining us! {plug} |
