By Bryan Alvarez This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it I MADE IT. We're about to start our ongoing play-by-play, so check back regularly throughout the night for more. Pretty good crowd already despite the fact that these are just the prelims. a. Tamdan McCrory vs. Akihiro Gono. Welterweight fight. Damn East Coasters booed Gono. Tamdan moves exactly the like geek in high school getting in a fight, excep the can fight. Looked like he landed more shots in the first round, though Gono got a takedown. After a boring first part of round two, Gono floored him with a punch/leg sweep combo, got side control and put on an armbar for the submission. Tamdan's arm looked bad but he appears to be OK. Not sure if the site is slow or if it's my connection, but this is brutal. Someone e-mail me and let me know if the site is running OK. 2. Luke Caudillo vs. Marcus Aurelio in a lightweight fight. Aurelio humbled him, and I mean bad. Just a brutal manhandling with the takedown, side control, and shot after shot after shot after shot after shot to the face. Luke apparently felt it was stopped early. As if. They must have liked this because Rogan went in to interview Aurelio afterwards. So this may air on TV later. I forgot to mention, Aurelio did an ARMDRAG in this match. And it was a good one. c. Jason Reinhardt vs. Joe Lauzon. Joe, who was mega over, beat this dude's ass. He took him down, got side control, took the back and put on a rear naked choke for the submission. Jason, who looks like Austin Aries, flipped off the crowd before tapping. Rogan interviewed Lauzon post-match as well. They just showed the fucking greatest thing I ever saw. It was a video package for Houston Alexander's fight. It was out of this world. They showed clips of big, scary-looking Houston killing men, clip after clip, while Joe Rogan and Dana White gushed over him. The thing is, this is real fighting and Alexander could lose tonight. But if anyone in major league pro-wrestling was smart enough to recreate something like this in WWE or TNA where you can protect a guy, the business wouldn't have any sort of issue with creating new stars. This was money. d. Chris Lytle vs. Thiago Alves. Hell of a first round. Both guys got knockdowns in what was largely a stand-up battle. Lytle hits SO hard and it's very apparent when watching it live at cage side. Action slowed down a bit in the second but still really, really good. Lytle is landing more shots and got a knockdown with a few seconds left in the ring. We're on to the third. Or not. We just saw BULL SHIT. They stopped the fight after the second. From my seat I figured they stopped it because Thiago's eye was swollen nearly shut. Nope. The doctor claimed blood was going into Lytle's eye. LYTLE. He was bleeding less than he was in the first, and Thiago's eye looked WAY worse. Everyone was IRATE, with loud "BULLSHIT!" chants. Thiago was booed out of the building until he cut a promo and said this shouldn't have been stopped. No way this airs on TV after that, and it was a good fight. Lytle passed right by me afterwards and his eye looked totally fine. This angered me. You need to come to UFC live just to see the pre-show video package. Absolutely amazing. 1. Spencer Fisher vs. Frankie Edgar. Edgar is from New Jersey so he better win. Loud "FRANKIE!" chants. This place isn't sold out but there are a LOT of people here. No riot yet. Frankie dominated that round. The smart marks of MMA are sitting behind me. Yee haw. Another round for Edgar, who is largely just taking him down over and over again at will. Fisher has a good guard. The best part of round two was Fisher throwing a wacky kick and immediately getting taken down. More of the same in the third and Edgar got the easy decision victory. I can see people not liking this fight, but it was fine here, mostly due to the crowd keeping it alive. 2. Joe Doerksen vs. Ed Herman. Largely boring round. I guess Herman won. No one cared at all live. The biggest pop was when the round ended and they showed Matt Serra on the big screen. Huge mix of boos and cheers. Second round was better. They had a decent scramble although it was a bit in slow motion. End of the round saved the whole fight. Joe put him in a triangle that looked tight, and as Ed was trying to stand up Joe transitioned into an armbar, also tight. It looked like Ed was about to tap when the horn sounded. Place went crazy for that. This became pro-wrestling booking. So after Ed got literally -- LITERALLY saved by the bell, they came out for round three and Herman punched him right in the face and knocked him out about 20 seconds into the round. The story of this match totally saved it because it wasn't much of a fight early. 3. Ryo Chonan vs. Karo Parisyan. To me, the story of this fight was Karo Parisyan not being able to pass the guard. He took Chonan down over and over and over again and never passed the guard even a single time. So I guess it was his round, but he didn't do any real damage. Internet here is sucking a big one. Not as big as this Karo Parisyan fight, but a pretty big one nonetheless. Not only did Karo not pass the guard in three straight rounds, but he also got swept. He won this fight via vigorous humping, which in some situations would be a positive but certainly not here. Then he cut a promo saying he AT LEAST HE GOT HIS WIN~!, but that he fought poorly due to personal issues. God bless the guy, but no one here gave two fucks about his personal issues and were booing like crazy throughout the last round, chanting "BORING!", booing during his promo, the whole nine yards. 4. Houston Alexander vs. Thiago Silva. Houston is a god in this building, especially after that video package from earlier. We'll soon find out whether the UFC curse is alive or dead. Welcome to life. Houston got mounted, couldn't escape, and got punched in the face until the ref stopped it. Now you know why, no matter what happens or how big UFC gets, there will always be a place for the make-believe world of pro-wrestling. 5. Rashad Evans vs. Michael Bisping. Bisping got booed like crazy when he came out. FUCKED OVER THE DEAF KID!!! Rashad's round. Didn't do a lot of damage but got several takedowns, and ground and pounded him for about a minute through the end of the first. I'd guess 29-29 going into the third. Bisping appeared to do a better job on the stand-up, though Rashad did hit a huge slam early in the round. Bisping managed to take him down, but I think it actually occurred just after the bell rang to end the round. A very competitive and very close fight. I would say that no matter what the decision is, you can't complain, unlike in the Matt Hamill fight. Rashad won the split decision. I guess people will see poetry in this. For those that only saw the PPV, sucks to be you. The prelims were great. I presume they'll air soon on Unleashed, so I'd check it out. Thanks very much for joining us, we'll be back Sunday for Survivor Series live play-by-play with anchor and a post-Survivor Series audio show for members with Karl Stern. I'll be back Monday night with Vinny for a post-Raw massively jet-lagged radio show. Talk to you then, and hope to see some of you in Philadelphia Sunday at 4:00 PM for the final leg of the DETHTOUR~! {plug} |
