By Matthew Hack CHIKARA returned to the famous American Legion Hall in Hellertown, Pennsylvania on May 17 for its "Cafe Culture" event, the first show of the 2008 Rey de Voladores tournament. A strange event that saw some unique developments, some surprise victories from some of the Young Lions and a shocking return from a veteran that's been missing from CHIKARA rings for quite some time. -----

----- Preshow Notes: Posters on the walls in the lobby for the Kaiju Big Battel next Saturday in Philadelphia, the Young Lions Cup shows next month, and a July 13 return to the New Alhambra. Quack came out at 7:00 to inform the crowd that they're "having the worst day ever" and the doors will be opened as soon as they possibly can. Thankfully, they did let the fans in about two minutes after this. The CHIKARA Season 7, Vol. 2 comic has been released tonight and should be available on the website this coming week. All the fans in attendance received toys taped under their seat. Louden Noxious came out to the ring with a guitar to launch the show. He is, in fact, our culture vulture for the evening. He performed the Ballad of Hellertown live for those in attendance. Attendance is around 190. 1. The Fabulous Two (Mitch Ryder and Shayne Hawke) [2] def. Create-a-Wrestler and Player Uno [0] with a spike piledriver on Create-a-Wrestler. The Fabulous Two now have two points. 2. Ophidian def. Bobby Dempsey. Remember that time Earthquake sat on Damien? Not quite the same result tonight, as Ophidian gets the win with the Cobra Clutch. 3. Hallowicked def. Amasis following a Yakuza Kick and a Rydeen Bomb. Really good match as expected. 4. Pelle Primeau def. Icarus. Pelle was well received, no typical anti-ROH student booing that takes place in 2008. Icarus was caught off guard as Pelle won with a quick schoolboy for the pin. After the match, Primeau was invited to compete in the Young Lions Cup tournament. 5. Rey de Voladores Eliminator: Helios defeats Lince Dorado, PSYCHO and TJ Cannon. PSYCHO pinned Cannon with his High Fly Bomb and Lince Dorado pinned PSYCHO soon after. Helios advances to tomorrow night's Rey de Voladores final after a Skies are Falling/Standing SSP moonsault combo. During intermission, EDDIE KINGSTON came in through the front door. He got in the ring and told the crowd that he's not booked "otherwise I wouldn't have shown up". He said he was there to burst the bubbles of people in the back. Shane Storm came out to ask what Kingston was doing and slapped King across the face. Kingston vs Storm II has been announced for the ECW Arena tomorrow! 6. The Order of the Neo-Solar Temple def. El Pantera and The Colony. Tim Donst came out under a cape and hood. Half of his face was painted and he has a new singlet with "dONST" on it. Ultramantis Black pins Fire Ant in quite the little atomico. Vin Gerard distracted The Colony from making the save by running through the crowd wearing a Soldier Ant mask. The Colony were trying to figure out how Vin got in the building, with Worker Ant quoted as saying "He must've bought a ticket, that mark." 7. Mike Quackenbush and Shane Storm def. Team FIST (Chuck Taylor and Gran Akuma) to gain their first point. Shane Storm had Gran Akuma up for the Air Raid Crash, then Quackenbush came off the top rope with a double stomp to the back of Akuma to allow Storm to get the pinfall. 8. Claudio Castagnoli def. Jorge "Skayde" Rivera. A Ricola Bomb is what it took to put the lucha legend away, but not before tons of awesome, innovative mat work from both men. Good stuff all around. 9. Rey de Voladores Eliminator: Incognito defeats Stupefied, Sonjay Dutt and Turboman. Sonjay continuously did the Fargo Strut, clearly a homage to his boss back in Orlando. Sonjay eliminated Stupefied with a Phoenix Splash, then Incognito eliminated Sonjay with a surfboard. Incognito pinned Turboman with a super blockbuster slam for the win to advance on to face Helios tomorrow in Philadelphia! {plug} |
