Rob Yundt vs Rob Kimmons Kimmons went for submission after submission from the bottom until catching a guillotine for the tap late in the first round Jeremy Horn vs. Dean Lister Lister also won via first round submission with a guillotine
Matt Brown vs. Matt Arroyo
First round was Arroyo outstriking Brown, including messing up his face with punches. Brown was bleeding bad from the nose.
Second round saw Brown come back, get Arroyo down and score with hard punches on the ground until ref Herb Dean stepped in. Good fight
Drew McFedries vs. Marvin Eastman
McFedries connected right away and Eastman ws in trouble, ending with punches on the ground in just 1:08
Josh Burkman vs. Dustin Hazelett
First round saw mostly Hazelett threatening with several submissions, including a tight D'Arce choke late in the round. Said to be good on the ground work and Burkman survived the round.
Second round was slower, and right before the end of the round, Hazelett finally caught Burkman with an armbar for the submission.
Dante Rivera vs. Matt Riddle - Rivera claims he will retire if Riddle beats him
Very close round one. It was mostly clinching against the cage. Each scored with a good knee to the chin at different times and Riddle got a takedown in the waning seconds and threw some elbows. To me, this is a 10-10 round, but if pressed to do a 10-9 it would be Riddle.
Second round was strong, particulary the last 90 seconds. Riddle got a takedown and mounted Rivera and was pounding him, but went for an armbar, which gave Rivera a chance to escape and get on top. Rivera caught a triangle late in the round. Time ran out just as Rivera punched his way out. 10-9 Riddle so I've got it 20-19 for Riddle.
Not a ton happened in round three. Riddle was on top but Rivera controlled him in a rubber guard and did more damage from the bottom. Late in the round Riddle got a full mount and threw a few blows before time ran out. I thought another close round but I'm pretty sure judges will give it to Riddle, who may take it 30-27. I've got it 30-28. Scores were 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 for Riddle. Rivera then said he wasn't going to retire. Riddle didn't give him his plaque when it was over, either.
Spencer Fisher vs. Jeremy Stephens is next.
Fisher said "Whooo!" right away and strutted when he came out. Mike Goldberg noted his idol is Ric Flair. Fisher was on top beating him down most of the round. He never came close to finishing, but was throwing elbows and punches most of the round. He had Stephens' back and briefly started working for a choke but Stephens was quickly out of trouble. Easy 10-9 round for Fisher.
Mostly Fisher on top doing ground and pound. The early part of the round had a nice standing exchange with Fisher coming out on top. With seconds left, Stephens got a nice spinebuster style slam and a few punches but not nearly enough to win the round. Fisher 20-18.
Stephens came back strong in this round. He twice went for guillotines, including having one on as time ran out. He was also on top doing ground and pound much of the ground, and busted Fisher's left eye. Stephens' round so I've got it as Fisher 29-28. All three judges have it 29-28 for Fisher. He did another "Whooo!" after winning.
Diego Sanchez vs. Luigi Fiorvanti is next.
This fight looks to be closer than imagined. It was all standing because Sanchez had a hard time getting inside, and when he did, couldn't take Fiorvanti down. However, Sanchez's stand up, particuarly the kicks, were better than they've ever been. Sanchez did the better of the stand-up to win the round, but Fiorvanti got a high slam takedown as time ran out and this is anyone's fight.
Great round. Sanchez decked Fiorvanti once early and once late. He also went wild trying to finish both times and Fiorvanti survived. Some great striking by Sanchez, but Fiovanti is still alive and hit a combination late in the round. I think a 10-8 round so it's 20-17. Great head kick and a flying knee to the chin and then Sanchez finished him with aggressive ground and pound. Fiorvanti did a great job of avoiding Sanchez's takedowns and scrambling out of trouble until the finish. Sanchez's kicking in particular was an added dimension he never had before and the kicks were strong and accurate. Best fight so far. Bruce Buffer made the announcement and wanted to go to the judges scorecards even though it was a finish.
C.B. Dollaway vs. Amir Sadollah in the TUF finals is next. Dollaway took him down and was getting in some good punches from the top even though Sadollah is really good at defending from the bottom. Suddenly, Sadollah used a triangle armbar from the bottom. Dollaway tapped and then started complaining loudly about the referee stopping it. Man, nothing makes you look worse than that.
Kendall Grove vs. Evan Tanner will end the show
First round saw Grove outstrike Tanner standing, including busting Tanner's left eye with an elbow. Tanner got a few takedowns. Grove got his back once and was working a choke when Tanner escaped. Move of the match was Tanner having Grove in a single leg and Grove jumped up with a hard knee with the other leg. 10-9 Grove in round one. Although Tanner got a takedown, this was Grove's round. He had Tanner in bad trouble with elbows and knees midway through the round but Tanner got a clinch and managed to survive. But Tanner was holding on as the round ended. 10-9 Grove, very close to 10-8.
Tanner knew he needed a knockout and kept throwing and was connecting solidly. Close round and Grove scored with a big knee at the horn but I'd give round to Tanner, whose face was covered in blood when it was over. Third round was a hell of a gutsy performance by Tanner. I've got 29-28 for Grove, who will win for sure, just not sure of the score.
29-28 Tanner, what?, 30-26 Grove, 30-26 Grove {plug} |
