SUNDAY UPDATE: BIG TV NIGHT TOMORROW; WWE TOP STAR DOESN'T WANT TO MOVE; MORE ON UFC LAST NIGHT PDF Print E-mail

We're looking for your thoughts on last night's Ultimate Fighter finals on Spike, so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

We're also looking for reports on today's WWE Raw show in Amarillo, last night's WWE Raw show in Albuquerque as well as tonight's TNA show in Cincinnati.

Monday is big with both a three-hour Raw and one of the bigger TNA tapings of the year as well.  Raw is from San Antonio, and is sold out ahead of time for the draft and week three of McMahons millions.  The draft is the talk of the industry because everyone is being kept in the dark on this one.  Aside from the very top talent (and this would be HHH, Michaels, Cena level guys), if they are moving, nobody is being told.  Last year, guys were literally told 20 seconds before coming out and this year has been kept even quieter.  There is the feeling they have to spice things up, so I expect this to have some noteworthy changes.  Of the top guys, except Undertaker who as being retired in storyline and theoretically not eligible (again, that's the theory internally), I'm guessing every top guy has at least had moving discussed.

TNA will be taping three weeks of television on Monday and Tuesday night in Orlando.  Matches for Monday include Kevin Nash vs. Booker T, A.J. Styles vs. Consequences Creed, Christian Cage vs. Brother Ray and Ultimo Guerrero & Rey Bucanero vs. Naruki Doi & Masato Yoshino in the World X Cup.  A slew of singles and tag team matches in the X Cup will be taped over the two days.  We're told that because they are taping three shows, things are likely to be taped out of the order of which they will appear on television.  While the plan was for all the World X Cup wrestlers to be at the tapings, there are still problems with some of them and all may not be appearing.  Milano Collection A.T. and Taichi Ishikari from New Japan were scheduled to perform at the weekend house shows and at least as of last night they weren't there.  They are billed in Cincinnati tonight but last word was one or both won't be there.

ECW and Smackdown will be taped on Tuesday night in Houston, and WWE will be holding a Wrestlemania press conference on Tuesday.

A look at week two of the Vince McMahon Million Dollar giveaway, more details on UFC combatting Affliction and other promotions, another Crazy week with the Hogan family, TripleMania, updates on UFC business, potential biggest PPV events of the year and changes in WWE are among the headlines in this coming Monday's issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

The issue can be accessed immediately with a premium subscription to the web site.

Our lead story looks at the million dollar giveaway, plans for next week, and in what way has this been negative for the company in ways they never figured and few are talking about.  We also look at the origins of the idea, and some interesting notes about both the week one and week two ratings.

We also look at Dana White's call to put a live show on Spike head-to-head with the Affliction PPV.  We look at matches signed and other matches being talked about and the theory behind certain of the matches.  We look at how this relates to the pro wrestling business of the 70s and 80s and what lessons can be learned.  We also look at the difference and why this specific tactic really has never been done in this manner.  We look at both the pluses and minuses of the decision and a look at yet another of the craziest weekends of the year.

We look at how this could be a benefit to the Affliction promotion and how it could be a negative.

We've also got a look at the crazy week in the Hogan family, with Larry King Live, and two sides going for P.R..  We look at Hogan's explanations and what does and doesn't hold up.  We look at the Graziano family response, more on Linda Bollea's problems with Hulk and now Bubba the Love Sponge even gets involved playing threatening tapes on the Hulk Hogan answering machine.

We've got Vince McMahon talking draft more on the media, an update on the ECW move to Monday, an update on the Night of Champions and Victory Road PPV events, an update on the future of Carlito, update on internal complaints not only regarding the product that were expressed at a meeting, but on mistakes made over the past 20 years that are currently plaguing the industry.

We've got some WWE injury updates, a funny interview with Chris Jericho, best selling DVDs, next MSG show, update on WWE business the past few weeks in California and overseas as well as notes from the weekend house shows.

We also have a feature on the big Friday night in Mexico City, with AAA's TripleMania and the stories behind what happened that night.  We look at a planned angle with a mainstream Mexican sports star that didn't happen and the reasons why.  We look at how a worked angle ended up being a shoot.  We also look at how the finish of one of the major matches was changed, which made no booking sense, and the crazy reason why.  We also look at the former WWE and WCW star who may be fired for what happened over the weekend, as well as U.S. stars like Bobby Lashley, Bryan Danielson, Teddy Hart and Jack Evans on the biggest AAA show of the year.

We have coverage of the  Dream 4 event at the Yokohama Arena, as well as a look going forward at both the lightweight and middleweight tournaments, with match-by-match coverage as well as a look at the U.S. television product.

We also look at one of the best wrestling angles of the year, which wasn't even on a wrestling show, with K.J. Noons vs. Nick Diaz.  We've got poll results and coverage of Elite XC, including an update on the second and third CBS specials.

We also cover the finish of this year's Best of the Super Junior tournament from New Japan, as well as provide an interesting update on some of the characters in the movie, "Bigger, Stronger, Faster."

We've got all the usual weekly notes including ratings of all the major national shows, including how each segment on Impact and Raw did so you can see what angles are and aren't working.  We've got results from the major league house shows over the past week as well as the major TV reports.

--Today is the first anniversary of the biggest three-day news event in wrestling history as Nancy Benoit was murdered today in her home by husband Chris.

--Update on an earlier post and rumors.  We're told by Elite XC that K.J. Noons vs. Nick Diaz will not be happening on 7/26.

--The projections for "Get Smart" are a $39.2 million opening weekend, putting it well above Kung Fu Panda for No. 1, which in week two is estimated to pull in $21.7 million.  As noted yesterday, the industry predictions were $35 million so it's considered a success.

--UFC officials were unhappy about the fights going long because they badly wanted the Dustin Hazelett vs. Josh Burkman prelim match to air on Spike and there was no time.  The fight had a great submission finish by Hazelett and UFC put it up on www.ufc.com for free right now.  Usually the prelims are done on a pay-per-view basis.

--Bryan and I will be doing an audio show on the site tonight.  Usually we will be doing these immediately after whatever is the big how of the weekend but with Bryan wrestling last night, we'll be doing it tonight.  If you've got any questions on the current WWE, TNA or MMA scene, history questions or anything else, send to me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it because besides discussing the draft, Impact, X Cup,  we want to do questions.  We take them from the message boards, but you can also send them.  We'll be doing another show tomorrow night directly after the draft.

--Regarding the no-shows last night at the TNA show in Danville, we don't have details but in most, if not all cases, it was not wrestlers no-showing but talent not being sent.  Jimmy Rave was on Rich Tate's Georgia Wrestling History audio show and noted he had just gotten back from Japan on Monday and TNA gave him the weekend off, although he must have been listed in some of the local advertising (thanks to Rich Tate)

--Batista on the draft in a SlamWrestling article at http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/2008/06/22/5953866.html said, "Personally, O would love to stay on Smackdown.  I feel like I've worked really hard with other guys to really build Smackdown.  I'm very proud of what we've achieved the past two years.  Smackdown's my home and it's where I'm going to stay."  He praised the Million Dollar Giveaway and said he hasn't heard any negative reaction to it and thinks it adds viewers.

--Jim Ross on his web site talked  about going to Connecticut on Thursday for a 24/7 taping where he, Ric Flair, Mick Foley, Tazz and Gene Okerlund discussed the greatest wrestling factions as well as the most important moments in wrestling history.  He said it was the most controversial Legends Roundtable ever, taped for three hours and unfortunately, likely edited down to one hour.  Flair in particular had a lot to say about WCW and when it got brought up that the NWO was one of the great factions.  They were, and boy is that a subject you could talk about forever.  Also coming up as one of the biggest moments in wrestling history was the 1997 Survivor Series.  I can imagine that discussion given Flair doesn't like Bret Hart and is best friends with HHH and Shawn Michaels, who were integral in what happened, and Mick Foley, when it comes to that subject, has always been strong in thinking in the other direction about what happened.

--Bill Barnwell has the first look at the UFC video game at http://ps3.ign.com/articles/883/883337p1.html  The game got a great review, noting they have the authentic referees, ring girls, cut men and corner men.  It won't be released until the spring, but they had a sneak preview showing of the game over the weekend in Las Vegas including showing a Quinton Jackson vs. Forrest Griffin fight, which Rampage won by TKO in round two.  And the videogame does not do Arianny Celeste justice.

--VH-1 will be debuting a new show called "I Love the New Millennium" starting on 6/23 airing at both 9 and 10 p.m. over the next four nights.  It's an updated version of "I Love the 80s" and among the people who are on the shows talking about modern trivia are Chris Jericho and Jonnny Fairplay
