ROH house show report 6-27 Dayton PDF Print E-mail
By Justin McClelland
These results may be a bit outdated now, but here's the results from the Ring of Honor Show in Dayton, June 27 - Battle for Supremacy

1.) Tank Toland and Shane Hagadorn defeated Mitch Franklin and Silas Young. This match was originally signed as Bobby Dempsey and Shane Hagadorn against Franklin and Young. Prior to the match, Larry Sweeney announces Toland's return and everyone took turns slapping Bobby around before sending him to the back. Crowd was none too pleased by the switch. Toland pinned Franklin after a one handed press slam, which was pretty cool looking. Match was mostly a squash. After the match, Brent Albright ran out and attacked the SNS crew and vowed to get his hands on Sweeney before the night was over.

2.) Tyler Black defeated Delirious. OK match, but nothing inspiring. Black was seconded by Alison Wonderland, so Delirious' would-be paramour, Daizee Haze came out to even the score. Daizee wasn't exactly the best back-up one could hope for as Alison walloped her with her purse and Haze was out. Rhett Titus carried Haze to the back and a distracted Delirious fell prey to a Black low blow and a brainbuster type move for the pin.

3.) Claudio Castagnoli beat Jay Briscoe and Brent Albright. Very weird to have a triple threat match where all three men were faces. Crowd tried to do dueling chants but was unsure how to work the third man in so somebody was inevitably left out. Match was really short, only like 8 minutes, so pretty disappointing. What they did was good, but it felt like it could have been more. Albright caught Jay with a half nelson suplex, but then Claudio tossed Albright out of the ring and gave Jay a running European uppercut for the win. Afterwards, SnS Inc. ran out and attacked Albright, but Jay Briscoe helped him out. Briscoe and Albright shook hands.

4.) Erik Stevens defeated Brian Danielson. Match of the night, far and away. Stevens has grown his hair out and looks totally unremarkable now, compared to his old mohawked self. Danielson spent the first half of the match working the knee in every possible way. Stevens finally fought back and finishers galore were teased. Stevens escaped Cattle Mutilation and the elbow strikes. Stevens tried the doctor bomb but Danielson slipped out and locked on a heel hook but Stevens made the ropes. Finally Stevens just ripped Danielson's head off with a lariat then pinned him with a doctor bomb for a huge upset. Crowd was mad at first, but then gave both guys a standing ovation. Danielson and Stevens finally shook hands and Stevens said Danielson truly was "the best in the world." Fantastic match.

5.) Necro Butcher beat Austin Aries in a relaxed rules match. Not so much a match, but an angle. Not a bad angle, but when this match was advertised as the no. 2 match of the night and the main event also has a BS finish, well, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Basically Butcher and Aries brawled for about 5 minutes, ending with Butcher going through a table. Then Aries grabs a mike and proclaims he doesn't have a beef with Butcher and that he refuses to fight him anymore. He even proclaims he and Butcher have similar political views, which has to be some kind of inside joke. Aries says his beef is with Jimmy Jacobs and Jacobs is just using Butcher to fight his battles for him (Jacobs). So Butcher keeps punching Aries in the face and Aries won't fight back. Repeat about 4 times until Butcher grabs a chair and hits Aries in the head for the pin. Jimmy Jacobs comes out to mock Aries but doesn't touch him. The crowd is vociferous in their disapproval of the whole development. As Aries leaves, he acknowledges the boos and says sometimes you have to lose a fight to win the war or something like that.

Intermission

6.) Kevin Steen and El Generico  beat Jimmy Jacobs and Joey Mathews - Another strong, but short match. End was really clever. Steen tries the compact piledriver but Jimmy escapes into a guillotine choke. Generico and Mathews are brawling and Generico must fight Mathews off in time to save his partner. He finally does and kicks Jimmy right in the head so Steen can pin him. It looked a lot better than I just described it. Afterwards Jacobs, Mathews, and Black lay out Steen and Generico with low blows.

7.) Chris Hero defeated Roderick Strong. Second best match of the night. Started kind of slow as both men just were chopping and hitting each other without any real flow to the match. Finally Strong dropped Hero back first across the ring apron and the match really got moving. Strong kept trying to put Hero away and failing. He hit one of his backbreaker variations but Sweeney put Hero's foot on the ropes, drawing monster boos. Hero got the pin out of nowhere with a roaring elbow. Crowd didn't know what to make of the finish and it felt very flat. Sweeney then reminded us that Hero has a streak of knockouts which put the finish into some kind of context, but the one-punch knockout move really needed to be emphasized with a promo before the match so the crowd knew to look for it. Otherwise a very fine match.

8.) NWA Champ Adam Pearce defeated ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness by DQ. Pearce had not only the entire SNS entourage (save Hero) but an NWA rep with him. Nigel received a mixed reaction, but the crowd was more and more behind him as the match progressed. First half was mostly comedy stalling, which was pretty entertaining. Nigel even did a Repo Man impersonation to strong support (Repo Man is Pearce's accursed look alike from another life). Match had a good story with Pearce constantly countering Nigel's lariats with different things until Nigel finally caught him with one. Eventually Sweeney interfered and got tossed by the ref. While this was happening, Nigel dodged a Pearce charge and flipped him over the top rope. Back in the ring, Bobby Dempsey tried to attack Nigel, but Nigel dispatched him then hit Pearce with a lariat for the pin...But the NWA ref at ringside (remember him?) ruled that under NWA rules, Nigel was disqualified for sending Pearce over the top rope. Crowd was NOT pleased by this. Loud "Dusty Finish" chant. Well, it is the NWA, after all.

Then a huge brawl broke out involving basically everyone involved in the show. Nigel reverted to heel by fleeing to the back with SNS when Brent Albright came out. Age of the Fall, Briscoes, and Steen and Generico took turns doing dives off the top, with Mark Briscoe making a surprise appearance. Finally only the Briscoes and one-time hated rivals Steen and Generico were left in the ring. Crowd really wanted to see a burying of the hatchet, but it was not to be. A small fight erupted until the Briscoes backed off, no doubt due to Mark's injury. Steen then gave an impassioned promo saying the next time ROH was in Dayton (November 21) he would be a champ.

Just a mediocre show. Two good matches, one decent match with a crap finish, and the rest was ok but ultimately forgettable, except Aries/Butcher which was junk.
