Paul Buentello vs. Gary Goodridge opens the show They were in the ring for several minutes but there was a problem as the doctor was having to take care of other business. Buentello now is leaving the arena. Now Gary Goodridge is leaving. Apparently they have just decided not to have this match until 5 p.m. when FSN begins. But now, Paul Buentello is back, 34 minutes early and here comes Gary Goodridge, without any ring entrance music or anything. He's like some Raw jobber in the ring after they come back from a commercial. Buentello connected with two punches. More punches by Buentello and now they are in the corner. After both agreed to separate, Butuentello with an uppercut and a knee but didn't hurt Goodridge. Buentello with lefts. Goodridge with low kicks. Buentello rocked him with right . Good body kick by Goodridge. Buentello connected with a left and some more punches. More low kicks by Goodridge. More body kicks by Butnello with uppercuts and knees. Body blow and knee by Butenllo and Goodridge with a right off a clinch. High kick by Goodrdige;. Spin kick by Buenello. Buentello's round. Buenello has footprints on the right side of his body under the ribs. Punches elbows and knees by Buentello. Nice combo by Buentello. Trading. Goodridge may have gotten the best blow but Buentello came back with an uppercut. Crowd pretty dead for this one, by the way. Buentello stepping on Goodridge's feet. Slugfest. Goodridge trying for a takedown. Good body kick by Goodrdige. Buentello was connecting with good punches late inthe round. 20-18 Buentello at this point. Buentello threw up in his corner between rounds. Goodridge working the body and a good low kick. Both really tired at this point. Goodridge nearly knocked himself down throwing a haymaker that missed. Good right by Buentello. Goodridge is about to go as if Butenllo can connect with something hard. Goodridge has a bloody nose. Goodridge nearly went down after missing another haymaker. Buentello fired a few at the bell. Buentello 30-27 the way I saw it. 30-27 scores across the board for Buentello.
They are airing a commercial for the TV show "Fighting Fedor." The storyline is that they are taking 16 heavyweights to St. Petersburg, Russia, where they will live and train together and fight each other in a tournament, with the winner fighting Fedor. Are they allowed to drink and trash the house? But the big question is will this be a WAMMA sanctioned championship match. Mark Hominick vs. Savant Young is next. There is a big banner on the screen that says Vitor Belfort vs. Terry Martin starts at 5:20 p.m. as they are showing Goodridge vs. Buentello on FSN right now. So who knows about Hominick vs. Young which the ring announcer told us was starting at 5 p.m. The ring announcer is being hung out to dry tonight. Vitor Belfort vs. Terry Martin it is.
There are a decent amount of people here. Probably 7,000 at this point. Randy Couture is in Belfort's corner. Belfort got a big reaction. He was announced as being from Las Vegas and representing Extreme Couture. By the way, if they go three rounds, they have no time for a second fight, which may be why Savant Young and Hominick got moved. Nice staredown and it's on. Vitor threw a nice kick to the head. Vitor trying a slam. Martin blocked him. Martin conneced with a right. Slow round. Martin chasing. Martin hurt him late. Close round. Fans booing. They haven't seen the Belfort wev'e seen who always seems to avoid contact. Could go either way. Martin moved forward but Victor found the range better and had the best blow with a kick. 10-9 Belfort.
Martin with a left to the temple. Belfrot with jabs using his reach. Belfort with a good body kick. Belfort is much sharper as a boxer. Another body kick. Martin took him down off the kick. Belfort got up without taking any damage. Martin still more aggressive and Belfrot backing up and jabbing. Martin's left eye looks bad. Belfort threw a hard knee, then a left and right combo that knocked Martin out. Huge pop for the KO. Now they are interviewing Randy Couture. This is very interesting because Couture's non-compete doesn't end until October.
Another break coming. No time for Savant Young's fight. And Megadeth is supposed to start the show at 6 p.m. There are easily 10,000 people here at this point. People are into this concert. Mike Pyle and J.J. Ambrose are in the ring while the concert is going. It's like they turned the lights off, and snuck them down there, sort of like they used to do with Hornswoggle under the ring. Pyle put on more than 20 pounds since weight-ins and he dwarfs Ambrose out there. Pyle got the takedown about a minute in. He's got the mount and Ambrose already turned his back. He's working for a choke after punches to the side of the head to soften him up. He finally locked it in for the one-sided win. I should mention the announcing team, doing the open right now is Frank Trigg, Jay Glazer and John McCarthy. Just saw Bill Goldberg in the second row. Steve Austin is apparently here, although I haven't seen him. Gregory Helms is also here. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Edwin Dewees is next. Crowd reacted to Nogueira like he was a superstar. Dewees more aggressive early but Nogueira got him down and putting the ground and pound on him. Dewees isn't scared and Nogueira let him up. Nogueira with six hard knees from a Muay Thai clinch. They are trading and Nogueira put him down with a left hook and a few more punches on the ground and it was over. Major standing ovation for this one. Fabio Negao vs. Matt Lindland is up next. Lindland got very little reaction, while Negao got no reaction. Nasty staredown by Lindland. Lindland decked him and clamped on a guillotine. Negao rolled over trying o escape but no dice. Lindland gave up the hold and is on top with body punches and mean wrestler mauling tacicics. He used a Mongolian chop. Who'd have ever thought Killer Khan would make a contribution to MMA. Lindland is throwing some elbows. More short elbows. Negao got up to his feet. Lindland looks real tired out there. Expanded too much energy in the failed guillotine. Negao connected with a few punches. Now Negao got a low kick. 10-9 Lindland. Lindland with a kick to Negao. Lindland is mauling Negao in the corner. Negao taking over with punches. Lindland is trying to stop him by mauling. Negao scoring a lot. Lindland came back and hit a good uppercut. Best fight so far. Negao with an uperecut and Lindland right back. Lindland took him down with 3:04 left in the round. Rubbing his elbow on Negao's face. Lindland with an elbow and more elbows. Hard blows by Lindland on the ground. Likndland mauled him on the ground probably enough to win the round tha he was rocked in early. Negaa was yelled at by ref Josh Rosenthal for intentionally sticking his head out of the ring. Negao isn't happy the way he's being mauled. 20-18 Lindland.
Both trading slow punches but Lindland connecting more. Negao went fo a guillotine but Lindland is out. Negao connecting with mooe punches with no sting. Lindland back . Both guys are exhausted. Now Lindland back. Negao is dead but throwing back. Lindland took him down and Negao almost fell out of the ring. Hard knee by Lindland and some punches snapping his head back. Negao tried a judo throw but the ropes blocked Lindland going over. Lindland did enough to win the round. Fans are booing this. 30-27 for Lindland. 30-26, 30-27, 30-27 for Lindland Mike Whitehead vs. Renato Sobral is next. Whitehead has put on a lot of weight since yesterday. Easily 25 pounds. Sobral with a hard low kick. Whitehead trying for a takedown and not geting it. Donald Trump just showed up with a hot girl and an entourage. This place is pretty much packed at this point. I'd say 13,000 plus. Sobral cracked hyim with a left. Sobral with a low kick. Sobral tried a takekdwodn but Whtiehead blocked. Whitehead bearhugged him in the corner and fans booed. Sobral with a right. Good left by Sobral. Loud Babalu chant. Whitehead tied him up. A USA chant started but only one guy would continue it. That was funny. Bablu took himdown at the end of the round. Whitehead back up right away, but ate some punches. Sobral 10-9.
Whitehead went for a takedoown but Sobral blocked him. Two kicks by Sobral. Whitehead charged for another takedown and finally got it. They were moved to the center with Whitehead on top. Stand-up ordered. Sobral missed a spinning backfirst. Not much happened. Really it's an even round. Sobral connecting. Whitehead took Sobral down off a kick and they almost tumbled through the roeps. Second time the ring plaeyd a part. Sobral connectinbg with punches. Sobral teeing off. Whitehead went for another takedown and got him down again as they tumbled out of the ring. Crowd is real mad about the ring right now. Crowd booing that Whitehead didn't get credit for the taekdown and they are starting on their feet. Sobral rocked Whitehead on the stand-up again. Sobral with a kick to the face. Spinning crescent kick by Sobral that popped the crowd. Sobral went for a takedown and this time the ropes saved Whitehead. Sobral kneeing his thigh as it ended. Sobral's round. Huge ovation. 30-28 30-27s across the board.
They just showed Tito Ortiz on the screen. I have to say UFC looks real bad when all the stars of MMA are here instead of Las Vegas.
Mark Hominick vs. Savant Young is up next. Hominick is using his reach to push the fight but hasn't connected. Young went for a takedown and it's blocked. Good combo by Hominick. Crowd booing both. Young rifled back a punch afer Hominick threw a few. Young staggered Homninick with a body blow but Hominick back with one up the middle. Hominick 10-9.
They showed Sylvia and Fedor on the screen. Crowd booed the hell out of Sylvia even more than you'd think. Round two is more of the same. Young went for a takedown and finally got Hominick down after they were tied up in he ropes. Hominick with a triangle from the bottom. Young tried a power bomb but Hominick moved away. Young with some punches from he top. Hominick going for another triangle but Young avoided it and throwing more punches from the top. Hominick going for an armbar but Young out. Another triangle by Hopminick. Now an armbar and Young tapped out. Awesome ground work by Hominick in this round. Crowd going nuts. Josh Barnett vs. Pedro Rizzo is up now. Rizzo connected with a good right first. Front kick by Barnett. Barnett with an ebow to the bridge of the nose. Side kick by Barnett. Another front kick by Barnett. Low kick by Barnett. Rizzo with a left. Crowd startinh to boo. Nice spin kick by Barnett. Good head kick by Rizzo. Fans booed this round a lot. Rizzo's left eye is cut. Very close round. Barnett 10-9 only for style points but it can go either way. Barnett with high kick to the face. Barnett KO'd hym with a left hook and one for good measure on the ground. Theys showed Undertaker standing at that one. Barnett look relieved. Bill Goldberg, one of the heads of WAMMA, got up and said he's either our No. 3 or No. 2 contender. Andrei Arlovski vs. Ben Rothwell is next. This will be the first of two U.S. vs. Russia fights where the crowd is almost 100% for the Russians. Crowd sees Arlovski as a real superstar. Rothwell wasn't booed heavily. Arlovski's reaction was no bigger than the last time I saw him in Columbus , but the biggest so far on the show. In a clinch and foot stomp by Rothwell and knees by Arlvoski. Arlovski is already more aggressive than he's been since his KO against Tim Sylvia. Arlovski took Rothwell down and went for a heel hook. Rothwell out. Arlovski with a low kick. Arlovski looks sharp and Rothwell looks concerned. Arlovski teed off but Rothwell came right back. The low kicks are taking effect. Rothwell cracked him at the bell. Good round, 10-9 Arlovski. Trading blows. Arvloski sharper and connecting. Rothwell bleeding. . Arlovski took him down and mounted him. Arlovski punching him on the ground. Went for another heel hook but Rotwhell escaped and now he's on top. Rothwell has 2:20 to do something on top . He rocked Arlovksi bad with punches. Rothwell with an elbow. Called for a stand-up with Rothwell hurting him. Now Arlovski is back with punches and kicks. He's unloading. Great flying knee by Arlovski. Fantastic round. 20-18 Arlovski.
Crowd going nuts at the start of the round. Rotthwell bulled him into the corner and body punches. Rothwell bleeding from the left ear. Crowd booing in seconds. Arlvovski with a kick. Another low kick. Arlvoski put him down and out with a series of more than a dozen punches and two crushing knees. Great performance by Rothwell as far as taking so many shots and staying in there, but Arlovski looked like a monster in finishing. Tremendous fight. One of the best heavyweight fights in a long time. Fedor Emelianenko vs. Tim Sylvia is next, five rounds for the WAMMA heavyweight title Everyone in the place is on their feet. Fedor's reaction was similar to Arlovski's. Fedor destroyed him. He took him apart, with punches standing, and choked him out on the ground in seconds. Time was 36 seconds. {plug} |
