Joel Rathasak Hi Dave, Thumbs Up! Best Fight: Cotto/Margarito Worst Fight: None (all 4 were very good to outstanding) Crowd was dead for the undercard despite it being very good. This to me is a big difference b/w MMA and Boxing crowds right now as MMA crowds will get into undercard fights if they are good. Mike Alvarado looked very good in KOing Cesar Bezan. Bernabe Concepcion looked great in Rd 3 when he finished Adam Carrera, but he pretty much just looked like he was feeling out Carrera in the first 2 rds. Emanuel Steward is awesome! -> he called Cesar Canchila's taking control of the fight b/w rds 2 and 3. In rd 2 Canchila was knocked down by Giovanni Segura. He was also able to call Segura's attempted comeback and said when his last stand was over (rd 8 if I remember correctly). After the fight was over I was just hoping that Cotto/Margarito would be able to match how good the Canchila/Segura fight was. Margarito was wearing an Affliction t-shirt both to the arena and the ring. The fight was outstanding. Back and forth action for most of the first 10 rds with Cotto winning 4 of the first 5 and Margarito (on my card) winning rds 6-10. I was really impressed with the judges as 2 of the 3 had Margarito up 96-94 after 10 and the third had it at 5 rds apiece. I thought that they would have had Cotto up 96-94 or even 97-93 just b/c he is the name. While the fight ended in the 11th the turning point to me was the 7th rd when Cotto got hurt and he was hurt bad. He was able to survive that round but it clearly sapped him of all his power and most of his legs as well. He was able to keep Margarito away from him for most of the next 3 rds and in fact Cotto was winning the 10th rd until about 20 seconds to go when he got hurt bad again. While he was able to finish the 10th the fight was essentially done at that point. Come rd 11 he had no legs to avoid Margarito and he got finished. That's pretty much the way I thought Margarito would win the fight (if he was going to win -> pre-fight thoughts), but I'll admit I thought Cotto would outpoint Margarito. I thought he would be able to frustrate Margarito a bit more than he did in the early rds. I will also say 2 more things: 1) I was cheering for Margarito b/c I believed him to be the better fighter and I really want to see a rematch with Paul Williams b/c IMO Cotto had virtually a 0% chance against Williams as Williams is better is all 5 phases of boxing (better jab, more power, better ring generalship, better defense and better inside fighter) whereas I do give Margarito a chance against PW (not a great chance but a chance); and 2) in rd I knew my pick was wrong as he was able to cut the ring off and corner Cotto and work him. If he could do it then, I knew it was just a matter of time until he would start to do it again and once it was done again it would be the prevailing theme the rest of the night as it proved to be. All in all a great night not only for Margarito, but also for the victorious undercard fighters who all provided entertaining fights and wins as well as for Boxing. For anyone who didn't watch the card, definitely go out of your way to watch the card - all 4 fights were worth watching. Cotto/Margarito is about as good as it gets for a main event. I was able to watch the Shotime portion of the EXC card prior to the PPV, but I haven't seen the CBS portion of the card. Once I watch that I will provide feedback to that as well. Here's to hoping that the rest of that card was good as well. I was surprised that the Shotime portion of the card ended at 10:06pm EST (where I watched it). I'm wondering if it went over everywhere or if it was just a case where I saw it had a lag in the feed? Rishi Malhotra Toronto Thumbs Up Best Match: Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Smith Worst Match: None of the fights sucked so, EXC & CBS Not Hyping the Diaz/Noons Feud There may not have been any star power on the second EXC-CBS show, but it was a solid night with good fights. All of the winning fighters came off like stars afterwards plus they have some key direction in the near future. Cyborg looked tremendous and a definite threat to Gina Carano. Loved the post-fight interview with Gina where you could tell she was a bit cautious. Now let's see if she trains more than a few weeks and can make weight for a possible title fight in October. Sucks that the budding lawyer (and Bryan Danielson look alike) lost in seconds but Jake Shields was dominant. Only problem, does he have anyone to fight? He can ask for GSP or Fitch, but it looks like he won't be having any big fights in the near future. Nick Diaz came off like a big babyface for the first time in a long time. I wonder if they didn't want K.J. Noons to get boo'd out of the building because otherwise, it made no sense to not hype their match in September. They dropped the ball on that front. Kimbo Slice is still great, who cares if he gets gassed quickly or can't do anything on the mat. It makes no sense to put him up against Antonio Silva in October, so will it be Brett Rogers or someone else? The main event was great. Robbie Lawler was a bit slow in the first round although his jabs were working well. Smith looked in control but wasn't doing much damage until those brutal elbows in the second round. Good night for Ranallo/Shamrock/Gus as they noted Smith's size. Looks like he gassed and wasn't willing to finish the fight even though he did the most damage up to that point. Lawler's knees were as brutal and he looked like a champ. So, they have two fights set for the fall plus Kimbo Slice. They should be fine for at least the rest of 2008. They desperately need more talent for 2009 though. Jonathan Solomon Dave, Best Match: Nick Diaz vs.Thomas Denny. Worst Match: None. THUMBS WAY UP. Awesome show. Hate to say it but this show was better than any of the shows (overall) from last weekend. EliteXC now has me as a fan. Every fight I seen (CBS portion only) was great in its own way. The Baszler vs. Cyborg was simply awesome in every way and easily could have been the best match on the show. I would put the Cyborg vs. Carano match as the co-main event on the October show as that will be the match I will want to see the most. Only thing I would like to see improved upon is the post fight interviews. They need to get someone to reel the fighters back in and have them talk about their fights instead of their friends and sponsors. But overall, I loved it. I can't wait now for the next show. Eric Ryan Thumbs Up (Only the CBS show, I don't get Showtime) Best Fight: Lawler/Smith Worst Fight: N/A Real cool show from top to bottom. While this show's rating might be down, this was an extremely important show to help set up the next CBS show, because Carrano/Cyborg could be awesome. My only question was why they did not build up the diaz/noons fight. Denny really impressed me by coming all out in a fight designed for him to lose. Mike Thomas DAVE I HAVE BEEN WATCHING MMA SINCE THE EARLY UFC DAYS IN THE BEGINNING. DENNY VS. DIAZ JUST DIDN'T LOOK RIGHT. I AM NOT SAYING IT WAS WORKED BUT THEY LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE PUNCHING IN SLOW MOTION AND LANDING WAY TO MANY. WATCHING THE PRE MATCH, THE 1ST ROUND, THE WAY THE FIGHT WENT AND THE FIGHTERS REACTION AFTER THE 1ST ROUND SEEMED STRANGE. I AM NOT A CONSPIRACY THEORIST OR ANYTHING I DON'T REALLY EVEN LOOK FOR THINGS LIKE THIS. I HAVE LITERALLY WATCHED HUNDREDS OF MATCHES IN SEVERAL ORGANIZATIONS, AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER THOUGHT SOMETHING LOOKED STRANGE. EXCEPT THE WORLD COMBAT LEAGUE AND I CAN'T HARDLY EVEN WATCH THAT BECAUSE SO MUCH OF IT LOOKS FAKE. IVAN ADAMS {plug} |
