Pat Rose: Champion wrestler remembers career.
With Karl Stern
If you were a pro wrestling fan in Alabama in late 1984 then you undoubtedly remember the dominate tag team of Pat and Randy Rose who held the Southeastern tag team championship that year. Dennis Condrey had left the area to work in Memphis and ultimately ended up with Bill Watt's in Mid-South where he was paired up with Bobby Eaton. This left his original Midnight Express tag team partner Randy Rose alone in Ron Fuller's Southeastern Championship Wrestling. He was soon paired up with his "cousin" Pat Rose who had previously worked under a hood as Mr. Wrestling along with the legendary Johnny "Mr. Wrestling II" Walker in the area.
I asked Pat Rose, "Who would you say were the three most influential people to you
during your career?"
Pat responded, "Arn Anderson, he called me in Louisiana and brought me to Pensacola for Ron Fuller. Randy Rose for being a great partner and showing me how to do interviews. He is still my friend today. Love you Randy Rose! Mr. Wrestling 2 for letting me be Mr. Wrestling 1 in Pensacola."
Reminiscing about some of the biggest angles in his career, Pat remembers, "One match that I thought was good was the time Tom Prichard and I hung Bob Armstrong over the top rope with a belt around his neck. That happen in Jackson, TN. Scott and Steve Armstrong did an interview with Bob on the couch with a neck brace. Another good one was when Mr. Wrestling 2 and I hurt Tonga Kid's shoulder on TV in Dothan, Al."
Like many wrestlers, Pat Rose preferred to play the heel role and did so all over the southern United States including Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, and Puerto Rico.
I asked Pat if he could do it all again would he and what (if anything) would he change?
"Yes! I would do it again." Pat says, "Yes! I would change some things. First thing I would change is that I would have been smart like my friend Jimmy Cornette and saved a lot of money. Back then we lived like rockers, a lot of cocaine and beer. That was stupid! But when your young and in shape you think I will never end. Boy, was I wrong. I thank God I am still alive and have my three year old son Camden Tyee. I'm teaching him to fish, he can cast a reel and already caught his first bass!"
Pat continues, "Another thing I would change is that I had just got a win on WTBS in
Atlanta and I was walking back to the dressing room which were in the offices. I had to walk through the control room when Ole Anderson and Ric Flair ask me to work full time and I said no. I had just had my daughter Erica and I wanted to be home with her. I wonder a lot about what would have happen if I would have said yes. Kills Me!"
While a lot of old school wrestlers have ended up in a bad way, the Pat Rose story has a happier ending. "I have my son Camden my daughter Courtney and my beautiful
wife Lisa. The Lord has really blessed me. I have been fishing in bass tournaments. I've been trying to build a career. My sponsors are Kicker Fish Baits, Daiichi Hooks, Hart Tackle, Tennessee Armature, Chattanooga Industrial Motors, J Kruz Eyewear, and without these people I could not do this. If you would like to sponsor me for the 2009 season please contact me at PatRose1.com or myspace.com/patrose1. Thanks to the Wrestling Observer for this interview time. Also thanks to my friend Karl Stern."
