by Ontonio Payne WWE Superstars TV Report for 7/9/09
Taped from around California.
Welcome to this very late report of WWE Superstars on WGN. Due to schedule issues, work and the like, I was not able to watch this until last night. I watched this before RAW and i think it was wrestling overkill. Also I saw this after elements of Smackdown from Friday after UFC 100, Brock WOOOOOOOO~!, which I will comment about at the end of this report.
R. Truth vs Ricky Ortiz
Before the Bell Ortiz says "everyone needs to rally up their personal life and does the truth want to know what's up? My hand at the end of the match." Back and forth basic WWE opening match offense with headlocks and punches by both competitors. Truth hits his signature offense with the flip, spit and heel kick. Punches in the corner is countered into a sidewalk slam by Ortiz. Ortiz tosses Truth out and we go to commercial.
WWE Kids magazine commercial.
Back from break and Ortiz has a half crab. After a robe break Ortiz works the back with a double axe handle off the middle rope. After a missed dropkick from Truth, Ortiz delivered a nice low dropkick. Big O missed by Ortiz. The Finish sees Truth counter a slam, hit the ropes and hit the lie detector for the three count. Your winner R Truth in 10 minutes * 3/4. It appeared Ortiz face was smashed with Truth shinbone on the finish as he was nowhere to be seen post match. Decent match as Ortiz is improved to nearly Miz level and has some athleticism. Solid match as usual from Truth.
Backstage Vince is on the phone and is interrupted by Hornswoggle chased by Chavo. Chavo claims Hornswoggle bit him. Vince makes the match the main event tonight. Chavo laughs and says that's not fair. Vince says well Chavo can wrestle on his knees tonight. Chavo demands a handshake and is bitten by Hornswoggle again. Ha ha ha.....not!
WWE Superstars Mysterio commercial airs.
WWE Rocks statistic - WWE averages over 100 million page views weekly. And no one goes to the store or looks for news, thanks F4wonline, eBay and torrent sites.
Zack Ryder vs. Tyler Reks. This is a rematch from last week. Collar and elbow battle to start. Reks with some aggressive mat work and works the arm. Slow deliberate pace. Ryder clotheslined over and does his Larry Zybysko stall tactics. Ryder gets to the apron and is hiptossed in. Reks back to the forearm and gets a two count. Somewhere in here the Matt Striker compares Ryder to the surfer term of "tool," someone who has a surf board and doesn't ride it. It appears they are trying to get Ryder over as a "tool" to the crowd for chant purposes. I'm down. Ryder comes back with a kick to the midsection and dumps Reks out as we head to break.
WWE Don't try this at home commercial. Good thing Matt and Jeff Hardy and D-Lo Brown never listened to this.
Back from break and Ryder has a dragon sleeper applied. Ryder gets a one count. Ryder works over Reks with submissions and kicks that lead to a two count. Ryder with a nice seated abdominal stretch on Reks. Ryder misses a missle dropkick off the second rope. Reks with a flap jack for a two count. Reks with a slidding punch after a whip reversal. Reks with a nice jack knife cradle for a two count. Ryder hits a stun gun on the midsection of Reks and hits the Zack Attack for the three count in about 11 minutes. ** Fun match. After the match Striker says another win for the "Tool" Zack Ryder.
John Cena and Pedro Soriano promo. I actually like seeing things like this, makes John Cena seem like a big star.
Raw Rebound - Million Dollar Man guest G.M., HHH vs Cena not so classic Raw match and Legacy begins to explode.
Friday Night Smackdown Jericho vs. Mysterio Promo. Go see this match, at least after this report.
Chavo Guerro vs. Hornswoggle.
Chavo gets no entrance and is in the ring like a total geek. Hornswoggle comes out and it's kiddie time. Chavo starts off his knees laughing. Hornswoggle is taller than Chavo when Chavo is on his knees. Hornswoggle teases a test of strength and is pushed down by Hornswoggle. Hornswoggle gets kicks on Chavo and kicks him out the ring. The referee orders Chavo to get back in on his knees, even coming up the ring steps. Hornswoggle gets a one count. Chavo nails Hornswoggle with a clothesline and works him over. Chavo slams Hornswoggle, which was a neat visual. Chavo slams Hornswoggle into the middle turnbuckle and then undoes the turnbuckle. While the referee is fixing this Chavo jumps to his feet and works Hornswoggle over. Hornswoggle gets a two count after a reversed slam. Chavo knees him in the midsection. Chavo runs the ropes and gets to his feet for a splash, but is countered by boots to the face. Hornswoggle mocks him and Chavo whips him into the turnbuckle. Chavo gets two of the three amigos and Hornswoggle counters with a suplex of his own. Hornswoggle works Chavo over and goes up top, but Chavo gets to his feet and hits Hornswoggle. The referee tells Chavo to get down and Hornswoggle bites Chavo. Hornswoggle headbutts Chavo and delivers the Tadpole splash for the three count in about five minutes. * 1/2 A somewhat perversly entertaining match as both held up their end of the match.
A somewhat entertaining show, though it lacked star power. I like Tyler Reks as he is already better then Ortiz, not that that is saying much. Ryder is much improved and can definitely get over in a opening to early mid match heel. Hornswoggle and Chavo's effort was good as the crowd response was the best of any match on the show.
Now, I watched the new Ron Killings gimmick on Friday and was not completely offended as I do not no where this is leading. For this to come after Superstars aired on Thursday in a completely different gimmick, and a win at that, with no angle or build up is puzzling. As a black man I don't see this is completely racist yet, but puzzling. If someone saw "Blue Streak" and this is a take off of a Martin Lawrence character I do not see where this can go. I doubt Truth will break out of this as simply a disguise, as Lawrence cop character did, because what is he in a disguise for anyway.?He's a paid WWE employee trying to fool the fans and break in and steal T-Shirts, though he's scheduled for a GQ cover shoot! The what's up gimmick is not the best, but surely better than this. It appears either this is punishment, I doubt anyone would be mad that he bashed Ortiz face with his shin, or a career killing bad joke gimmick. I hope this does not lead to menstral show like racism, which this was reminiscent of with the messed up teeth, bug out eyes and shucking and jiving. I just don't understand taking an established star and taking several steps back, I could at least see bringing up a developmental talent with a crap gimmick to ruin their them. Ron Killings can talk, wrestle, dance and keep his muscularity in a "drug" tested environment and gets saddled with this. I usually try to give the WWE the benefit of the doubt on racism, but the treatment of Ron Killings echoes back to the treatment of Lashley and Mark Henry. I'm not suprised this was on Smackdown with who is lead writer. I'm ashamed to be a former Freebirds fan with such a segment getting on this show. Mysterio and Jericho was good enough to distract me temporarily though. And to see WWE PPV business is struggling and they come up with gimmicks like this that are NO BUYS~!. See you Thursday.
