Ring of Honor TV report - Bennett vs. Edwards

Ring Of Honor T.V. Report 3/31/2012

The show opens with footage of last week’s match between Michael Elgin and Adam Cole as part of the March Mayhem tournament.

Kevin Kelly and Nigel McGuinness introduce this week’s show from the Du Burns Arena in Baltimore, Maryland. They preview tonight’s matches between Kyle O’Reilly and Tommaso Ciampa as well as Mike Bennett and Eddie Edwards.

Ciampa and Embassy Limited (Prince Nana and R.D. Evans) are interviewed regarding Ciampa having stolen Jay Lethal’s TV title belt. Ciampa says that the title is Lethal’s prized possession. Ciampa says that for him the belt is a trophy representing a year of dominance and if Lethal wants it back he can grow a set and take it back.

O’Reilly comes to the ring followed by Ciampa. The winner of this match will face Lethal in the semi-finals next week. Ciampa shoves O’Reilly before the match. They circle each other and tie up before trading a series of hammerlocks. O’Reilly hits a dropkick and Ciampa knocks him down with a shoulder-block. They circle again and do a test of strength before exchanging kicks. O’Reilly hits a Northern Lights suplex followed by kicks Ciampa’s chest. Ciampa eventually ducks and hits a low dropkick. They continue to exchange leading to Ciampa hitting an overhead belly-to-belly suplex. Ciampa is on offense and cuts off a brief O’Reilly comeback by jumping in the air and coming down with a knee-drop on O’Reilly’s back. Ciampa hits a vertical suplex and starts bringing forearms down on O’Reilly. Ciampa hits an Irish whip and then ties up O’Reilly in the Tree of Woe and hits him with a bare-bone knee-strike to the face. Ciampa puts O’Reilly in a surfboard and O’Reilly starts fighting out. Once he gets out he hits a belly-to-back suplex and both guys are down. O’Reilly hits a running forearm and then a dropkick and puts Ciampa on the top rope for a belly-to-back superplex. Ciampa gets up right away and whips O’Reilly into the ropes. Ciampa takes him up in a tilt-a-whirl move but O’Reilly brings Ciampa down in a DDT. O’Reilly repeatedly slaps Ciampa in the face but Ciampa suddenly hits a clothesline. Ciampa tries to take up O’Reilly in a powerbomb but O’Reilly puts on a guillotine. Ciampa picks him up for a superplex and O’Reilly fights out with knees to the head. O’Reilly gets out and charges Ciampa but takes a knee to the torso and crumples, leading to the referee stopping the match.

After the commercial break Kelly says that ROH World Champion Davey Richards will be facing Maryland wrestler Ryan McBride in a Proving Ground match. Richards is interviewed and says that everyone coming to him asking for an explanation of Kyle O’Reilly’s behaviour. Richards says that O’Reilly is his own man and that what he has done is out of loyalty but he did not like O’Reilly not following the Code of Honor. Richards says that is not what he or Team Ambition are about. Richards says that McBride is in the wrong place at the wrong time and that he cannot promise he will not see Eddie Edwards across the ring.

McBride comes to the ring followed by Richards. The “Tale Of the Tape” shows that McBride is 27 and Richards is 26. They shake hands but as the bell rings Richards hits a running knee-strike. He hits another knee and knocks down McBride. Richards goes for a pin attempt and McBride kicks out leading to Davey putting an ankle lock on for a quick submission victory.

After a commercial break Kevin Kelly interviews Kevin Steen in the ring. Kelly notes that Steen requested the interview and asks what is on his mind. Steen says that he has a question for Kelly and asks why it seems that Ring Of Honor is doing everything it can to keep him from having an actual match on the tv show. Steen says that it seems like the only time he gets to be on the show is when he is talking to Kelly who then says that he thinks it is because of Steen’s reckless actions and the damage he inflicts on his opponents. Steen says that he thought that was the point and that if he was like Davey Richard and shook people’s hands he would be on the tv show. Steen says that he is not going to be hypocritical by trying to break someone’s neck and then being buddy-buddy with them. Steen says that perhaps Richards doesn’t answer his challenges because of his pride but says that he knows Ricahrds has pride. Steen says that maybe he can’t hear him because of his cauliflower ear from jiu-jitsu. Steen then says that Richards can’t hear him because his head is shoved so far up Jim Cornette’s (censored). Richards runs to the ring followed by Cornette who tells Richards not to listen to Steen who would just fight him if that is what he wanted. Cornette says that Steen just wants to get Richards in the ring so he can win the ROH title but if Steen wants a title match he is going to have to earn it. Steen asks if Richards has a set and if they’re in Cornette’s pocket. Richards slaps Steen in the face and Steen laughs before leaving the ring.

On “Inside Ring Of Honor” Kelly reviews last week’s match between Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin and Caprice Coleman and Cedric Alexander. Kelly sys that Haas and Benjamin looked at it as a warm-up match and went in over-confident. Footage is shown of the Briscoes interfering with a steel chair leading to Coleman and Alexander getting a win.

Kelly reviews Ciampa recently going to a time-limit draw with Lethal for the tv title, noting that Lethal is the first man Ciampa faced and did not defeat. Lethal is interviewed and says that it hurt when Ciampa stole his title belt but that it will hurt Ciampa more when he takes back his title belt, ends Ciampa’s undefeated streak and becomes the dominant male. Kelly notes that Lethal and Ciampa may face each other in the March Mayhem tournament.

After a commercial break Mike Bennett comes to the ring with Maria Kanellis and Brutal Bob Evans followed by Eddie Edwards coming the ring. They tie up and trade several armbars.   They criss-cross and Edwards armdrags Bennett before taking him to the mat and works on his arm. Bennett gets out and Edwards chops him before continuing to work his arm. Bennett whips Edwards into the corner but Edwards puts him in the Tree of Woe and hits a dropkick. Edwards goes to the outside for a baseball slide dropkick but Maria gets in the way allowing Evans to drop Edwards spine-first on the guardrail. Bennett rolls him in for a pin attempt. Bennett is laying in punches and the match goes to commercial break. Back in the ring and Edwards is chopping Bennett but eats an elbow to the face. Footage is shown from the break of Bennett hitting a clothesline in the corner followed by a neckbreaker. In live action a shot is shown of lacerations on Edwards’ back from being dropped on the guardrail. Bennett tries to hit a vertical suplex but Edwards blocks it and hits his own vertical suplex. They trade forearm smashes in the middle of the ring and Edwards goes to chops. Bennett kicks him in the chest but Edwards hits a hurracanrana. Edwards whips Bennett into the corner, comes in with a chop followed by a vertical suplex and a missile dropkick. Bennett kicks out of a pin attempt. Bennett tries to roll up Edwards but gets elbowed in the head. They criss-cross and Bennett ends up on the apron and gets kicked in the face. Edwards goes for a dive but Evans grabs his leg. Edwards fights out and dives out of the ring onto Bennett before getting back in the ring and also hitting a dive on Evans. Both guys get back in the ring and Bennett goes to the top but is suplexed by Edwards. Bennett goes for the Box Office Smash but gets armdragged by Edwards. Eddie goes a backpack chinbreaker and gets blocked. Edwards hits him and then attempts a backpack chinbreaker from the apron to the outside but gets speared by Bennett who attempts a pin. Bennett puts Edwards on the top rope and attempts a superplex but Edwards fights out. Bennett punches him in the face and attempts another superplex but Edwards puts Bennett on his shoulder and hits a Falcon Arrow off the top. Edwards puts the half Boston Crab on Bennett. Edwards runs off the ropes but hits Maria who acts hurt. Edwards gets rolled up by Bennett for the win. Maria is then fine and McGuinness says he’s seen better acting on Redtube. Kelly says that next week will see Lethal vs Bennett and Cole vs Ciampa.

The show was really good again this week. The two tournament matches were good enough that I enjoyed them even after all of the wrestling I’ve watched in the past two days, much of it with the same wrestlers and being more recent. Maria Kanellis is really strong in her character and deserves a lot of credit. I’m looking forward to next week’s show.
