Newton Tattrie, Mongols original, passed away at 82

Newton Tattrie of Pittsburgh, a former wrestler and promoter, passed away July 18th at the age of 82.

Tattrie was best known under the name Geto Mongol, as part of The Mongols tag team that was huge in the WWWF in 1969 and 1970.  Tattrie and Josip Peruzovic, a huge weightlifter who had defected to the U.S. and tried to become a heavyweight boxer, were the original Mongols, Geto and Bepo, who held the International tag team titles, the forerunners to the WWWF world tag team titles, and headlined all the major arenas in both singles and tag team matches against Bruno Sammartino.

After Peruzovic left the Northeast to go to the AWA and Boris Breznikov, and later became more famous as Nikolai Volkoff, Geto took Bill Eadie under his wing as Bolo Mongol.  Eadie later became more famous as Masked Superstar and Demolition Ax.

Tattrie eventually promoted wrestling in Pittsburgh when the city was part of its own separate circuit and not affiliated with the WWWF.
