Here's the TV report for Ohio Valley Wrestling for April 6th. The crowd was around 90 or better, but man were they ever dead. This crowd needs to liven up for sure. Dean Hill, Gilbert Corsey & Kenny Bolin were the TV announcers. Bolin was playing up his brief cameo in a video package on Wrestlemania big time. I popped when I saw it on Sunday myself. Ron Hed and Brittany DeVore were the ring announcers. No Jim Cornette for the 4th week in a row. I have no idea if something is up with that or not, but I'm starting to wonder about his OVW status.
OVW had its latest Saturday Night Special show this past Saturday, April 2nd. The main results were, Mike Mondo retained the OVW heavyweight title by going to a DDQ with James "Moose" Thomas... Mohamad Ali Vaez beat Rudy Switchblade to regain the OVW TV title, and avoid getting his head shaved... The Elite(Ted McNaler & Adam Revolver) beat Fighting Spirit(Rapahel Constantine & Christopher Silvio) to win the OVW Southern tag team titles, and Fighting Spirt must now split up "forever"...And the Blossom Twins beat Lady JoJo & Taryn Shay, so the Blossoms are now "officially" reinstated back on the OVW roster. I don't know when the next Saturday Night Special will be. Once again, due to time constraints on my part, I'm going to have to make this report quick.
1. "Smooth" Johnny Spade beat Raphael Constantine
Dark match. Constantine looked sad to be without his former tag team partner Christopher Silvio, I was sad watching this match. I was thinking this could be a good one, it wasn't. There was a scary moment on a blown Moonsault spot by Constantine when his feet hit Spade in the face. Constantine hit a crossbody from the top, but Spade rolled thru and got the win. This just didn't click.
2. Raul Lamotta, Jimbo Onoo & Mitch Johnson beat Randy Terrez, Dre Blitz & Lennox Lightfoot in a six man tag
Also a dark match. Blitz is now wearing red trunks instead of purple tights. Terrez and Lightfoot tried to do a little Lucha Libre, but it was marred by a botched Monkey flip type spot. Everyone ended up in the ring brawling. Onoo and Lamotta gave Lightfoot a double chokeslam, and Mitch Johnson then came in and cradled Lightfoot for the win. I believe this is the first match I've ever seen Mitch Johnson win, especially by pinfall. It doesn't look good in OVW for the hapless Lennox Lightfoot. Yeesh.
3. Jason Wayne beat Shiloh Jones by submission
This was the start of the TV taping. The big strapping former Marine Jason Wayne simply overpowered Jones here. Wayne gave Jones a Military press slam, then just dropped him. Wayne won by submission with the torture rack backbreaker.
Brittany DeVore with a backstage interview with Prince Bolin, James "Moose" Thomas, and Mo Green. Bolin was complaining that Thomas had to earn another shot at Mike Mondo's OVW heavyweight title. Bolin said they are being punished for Thomas' history of violence. The TV main event today will be Thomas vs Jamin Olivencia, and the winner of that match will recieve a title shot against Mondo this Saturday night at an OVW house show in Austin, Indiana. I like the idea of the TV main effecting the house show line up for the same night.
Gilbert Corsey got in the ring and out came the new, and now four time, OVW TV champion Mohamad Ali Vaez. His personal security Mr. B was conspicuous by his absence. Vaez said in 39 days he will become the longest reigning TV champion of all time. Vaez said when he beat Rudy Switchblade to win the TV title back, he also won back his $11,000 Rolex, and was supposed to get his $2,500 back, but that Switcblade had already spent the money. Vaez said was he was a "Bastion of honesty", and said he was going to get that money back. Vaez than complained about OVW not providing a safe working environment, and said Jamin Olivencia rearranged Mr. B's face at the Saturday Night Special. Vaez since OVW is unsafe, he's leaving for the night. Corsey wanted to ask Vaez another question, but Vaez just left.
Brittany DeVore did a backstage interview with Johnny Spade. Spade said he would do whatever it takes to reach his goal, which is the OVW Heavyweight title.
4. Benjamin Bray & Asher Knight beat The Iwi(Te Tahi & King) w/"Mr. 100%" Gary O Davis
The Iwi are billed as being from New Zealand, and wore Bamboo skirts to the ring, though they didn't wrestle in them. Basically a Samoan savage gimmick, but they're not fat. Interesting looking team with good gear, and apparently they are legit from New Zealand. Davis was wearing a suit and a Bolo tie. Asher Knight hit a sloppy Diamond cutter I beleive on King, and Bray then finished him off with an elbow. I'm guessing the Iwi are just passing thru if they lost to, and got pinned by, jobber Benjamin Bray. But it looks like OVW may try to push Knight and Bray as a babyface team. I wouldn't mind seeing more of the Iwi actually.
Brittany DeVore did a backstage interview with Jamin Olivencia. Olivencia cut a promo on James "Moose" Thomas, then said when he beats Thomas, he will have no problem facing Mike Mondo for the OVW title, even though he respects Mondo.
5. Holly Blossom w/Hannah Blossom beat OVW Womens champion Lady JoJo w/Taryn Shay in a non title match.
Much of this match was JoJo working on the leg of Holly Blossom. Holly's candy striped Mini-skirt came up on her for an extended period of time, and we all saw how the view was on a clear, but pantyhosed, day. Hannah Blossom brawled with Taryn Shay on the floor, meanwhile CJ Lane came out and got on the apron for what seemed like forever, waiting for Lady JoJo to turn around. JoJo never did turn around, so Lane finally just grabbed JoJo by the hair. This allowed Holly to roll up JoJo for the win. This match was the pits, absolutely terrible.
They showed a video of Paredyse talking while taking a bubble bath. Paredyse said he regained his revenge at the Saturday Night Special against Fighting Spirit since they now have to split up forever. Paredyse talked about losing his tag team partner Ryan Nemeth. Paredyse said he has realized he doesn't need a man in his life, and said he's back on the market as a singles competitor. Paredyse took a drink from a blue liquid. Paredyse said it tasted like mouth wash.
Gilbert Corsey got back in the ring and out came The Elite(Ted McNaler & Adam Revolver). McNaler said it was great to be tag team champions again, and it feels good to finally get rid of Fighting Spirit forever. They admitted it felt good to have the support of the fans recently. Revolver agreed, but said when they dropped the comedy Mobile Homers gimmick is when they became champions, and said they did better without the fans, and don't need them. I wondered what the point of this segment was. I guess it was just The Elite are staying heel, despite teasing going face lately.
They showed a split screen of James "Moose" Thomas & Jamin Olivencia warming up.
6. James "Moose" Thomas w/Prince Bolin, Mo Green & The Paparazzi guy beat Jamin Olivencia
TV main event time. Mike Mondo came out, wearing his ring gear and no shirt, and joined the broadcast team for this one. The early story of the match was the big man Thomas somewhat getting the better of the intense little bulldog Olivencia. Thomas mauled Olivencia in the corner. Olivencia got some hope spots in, but Thomas held him on the mat for quite awhile, wasn't all that exciting really. Thomas missed a Vader bomb. Olivencia reached thru the ropes and slapped Prince Bolin, which got a big pop from the crowd, and changed the whole mood of the room, and God knows it needed it it. Was dead in there before that. Olivencia with big forearms, and running body blocks to the corner on Moose. Olivencia though, ended up in the tree of woe. Thomas mounted the ropes, but Olivencia sat up, and threw him off, sort of a unique German Suplex while hanging upside down in the corner type spot. Thomas missed a charge to the corner, but Olivencia looked confused as to what to do next. Olivencia hit a Frog splash of sorts. The Paparazzi guy got on the apron, but Olivencia slugged him off. Referee Chris Sharpe then got bumped. OVW is really overdoing the ref bump spots, and too often it's Sharpe doing the bumping. Looked really telegraphed too. Rocco Bellagio came out to attack Olivencia, but "Lowrider" Matt Barela came out and brawled back to the locker room with Bellagio. Thomas though, amid the confusion, hit his "Moose kick" on Olivencia and got the win. So Thomas will now face Mondo for the OVW Heavyweight title this Saturday in Austin, Indiana. This match wasn't bad, but it wasn't that good either. I don't think Olivencia really has his timing back all the way yet. It picked up nicely down the stretch though.
7. OVW Heavyweight champion Mike Mondo beat Rudy Switchblade in a non-title match
Dark match. Mondo had an ace bandage on under the knee pad of his left knee. Both guys with some slick moves early, but Mondo took control, and started to break Switchblade down systematically. Mondo with a unique reverse Indian death lock. Mondo in control for several minutes, but finally missed a diving headbutt off the second rope. Both guys than exchanged big punches and chops, with Switchblade getting the better of it. Switchblade went up for his Fropsplash finisher, but Mondo moved and Switchblade rolled thru. Switchblade with round house kicks, but missed a second rope Moonsault. Mondo went for his "Gut buster" finisher, but Switchblade blocked it. Mondo caught Switchblade with a roll up and got the win. A pretty decent match really, but the crowd could have cared less. They were almost totally comatose here, and it hurt the match a lot. This match deserved a better fate.
