FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE

Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the father and original trainer of Khabib Nurmagomedov, passed away today after battling COVID-19 and recent heart surgery related to the virus. He was 57. Nurmagomedov first took ill in May.

Announcer Ian Riccobani said the item in the new Observer about ROH not offering new deals during the pandemic with rare exceptions isn't true and that many have gotten them. He said some talents have gotten raises as well. Other talent has not even gotten offers for new deals.

Fighters Only has announced its World MMA Award nominees that can be voted on through 7/31. Male Fighter of the Year nominees are Henry Cejudo, Israel Adesanya, Justin Gaethje, Jorge Masvidal and Douglas Lima. Female Fighter of the Year nominees are Weili Zhang, Amanda Nunes, Valentina Shevchenko, Kayla Harrison and Cris Cyborg. Fight of the Year nominees are Zhang vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Kamaru Usman vs. Colby Covington, Adesanya vs. Kelvin Gastelum, Dustin Poirier vs Don Hooker and Josh Emmett vs. Shane Burgos.

One of the big issues with fighting during the pandemic is lack of training. Max Holloway noted that his flight out of Hawaii was the first time he's actually seen his coach and corner men in person. He did no sparring this camp and his training was all from home getting coaching via zoom. ESPN story from Ariel Helwani's interview with Holloway.

WWE

  • The CBS show "Game On!" on Wednesday did 3,213,000 viewers and was tops for the night in 18-49 with an 0.6, and featured Rob Gronkowski and Becky Lynch. It was the highest rated show on television Wednesday in 18-49.

UFC

  • Marina Rodriguez vs Carla Esparza on 7/11 is off because one of Rodriguez's cornermen tested positive for COVID while in Sao Paulo for testing to allow people to fly to Abu Dhabi. Anderson dos Santos and Vinicius Moreira were taken off the 7/15 show because both tested positive. 
  • Shavkat Rakhimov was pulled from the 7/25 fight with Ramazan Emeev due to an injury.  
  • Jesse Ronson vs, Nicolas Dalby has been added to the 7/25 show. Ronson replaces an injured Danny Roberts.
  • Matt Schnell vs. Tyson Nam is being talked about for 9/12/ 

AEW

  • Brian Pillman Jr., who was in the audience at Wednesday's television, is under contract to MLW but his deal allows him to perform with AEW and there is no issue from.the MLW side.

  • OVW announced a deal with Film Volt on the Roku App for international distribution. 
  • Harry Venis, the former mayor of Davie, FL passed away this morning. Venis ran shows in the city while mayor and even did a celebrity wrestling stint that garnered him some publicity.  He was mayor from 1997 to 2003 and was closely aligned with Rocky Johnson,who lived in Davie at the time, while mayor.
  • The Ascension told WrestleZone.com that their new names will be Big Kon and Vik, The Awakening as a team. 
  • Paradigm Pro Wrestling will air a UWFI style live tournament called Heavy Hitters 2 on 7/24 at 7:30 p.m. on IndependentWrestling.TV.  The show will be from Sellersburg, IN.  It will be a one-night 20 man tournament with matches under both UWFI and hardcore rules. Names listed include Stephan Bonnar, Tom Lawlor, Erick Stevens, Matt Justice, Dominic Garrini, Chris Dickinson, Calvin Tankman and A.J. Gray. Bonnar faces Justice in a street fight in the main event.  Matches can be won via knockout or submission, no pins, and there is a point system in place.  Matches also announced are Lawlor vs.Tankman, Garrini vs. Gary Jay Reed Bentley vs. Stevens, Aaron Williams vs. Gray and Cole Radick vs. Freddie Hudson.
  • Wrestle Rampage in Adelaide, Australia returns on 7/24.
  • FITE.TV and Synergy Pro Wrestling on 7/11 will air Alex Zayne vs. Blake Christian in a 30:00 Iron man match.  Proceeds will benefit the American Nurses Foundation Coronavirus Response Fund.  J.D. Drake vs. Tony Deppen and Jordan Oliver vs. LSG have also been announced. The iPPV will be priced at $12.99.
  • Eric Young returns to the ring on 7/24 for Lariato Pro Wrestling in Dublin, GA at the Southern Pines Ag Center.
  • KSW returns on 7/11 from a studio in Warsaw, Poland at www.KSWTV.com  The main event is Norman Parke (28-6-1) vs. Mateusz Gamrot (15-0), who once fought before 58,000 fans with Gamorot winning and a second bout ended as a no contest in Ireland. 
  • The Lucha Libre promotion Vanguardia has signed up with IWTV.
  • Audaz, a major 70s star in Mexico, performing as a singer in a movie after retiring from wrestling.
