Daily Update: Jury awards Hogan $115 million, tons of events this weekend

HOGAN V GAWKER UPDATE

The Florida jury just came back with a verdict awarding Hulk Hogan $115 million in his case with Gawker Media.  The jury found that Gawker violated his privacy by publishing the sex tape recorded by Bubba the Love Sponge.  Hogan was looking for $100 million in damages.

FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE

Even more stuff happening over WrestleMania weekend.  NXT will be taping four weeks of television between 1-5 p.m. at Fan Axxess on 4/2.

The USA Network will be airing the first hour of WrestleMania free on television from 3-4 p.m. featuring the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal.  Prior to the Battle Royal they will be airing a marathon of Dwayne Johnson movies including "The Rundown," "Faster," "Fast Five: and "GI Joe Retaliation."  The edited television version of the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony will air on the Thursday after WrestleMania at 10 p.m.  It's interesting they are putting it in prime time which tells you more about how badly USA's prime time ratings have fallen.

The biggest heavyweight match in the NCAA tournament, a possible final with Nick Gwiazdowski of North Carolina State, who hasn't lost since 2012 and his win streak is now I believe 87 wins in a row against 2015 world champion Kyle Snyder of Ohio State is still possible.  Snyder is the youngest world champion ever to come from the U.S., winning it at the age of 19 after placing second at 197 pounds in the NCAA tournament last year.  Both will be battling at different weights for the 2016 Olympic team later this year.  Both have to win their semifinals tonight to make it happen.

Dan Severn was furious about Ken Shamrock not fighting him on Sunday.  He said that the show was originally scheduled for 2/21 and then Shamrock asked to push it back one week because of his Royce Gracie fight.  Severn said he asked to push it back a month in case Shamrock got a medical suspension.  Abbott badly failed his medicals to the point he shouldn't even be doing strenuous exercise, let alone fighting.  Severn said he wasn't disappointed at Abbott, because really the only people he was interested in fighting were Royce Gracie, Mark Coleman or Shamrock.  The promotion came back and suggested Maurice Smith, but Severn said he wasn't interested in facing Smith.  Severn used words like "deceitful, cunning, slippery and slimy" on Shamrock, who he said claimed to have been injured in the Gracie match.  He said that a few days after Shamrock said he was hurt, he tested positive.  Severn said he had been training three or four times daily since November for this comeback fight, and will do a meet and greet and a Q&A.

Congratulations to Wesley "Davey" Richards and Lauren Williams Richards (Angelina Love) on the birth of a boy yesterday.

The 4/2 Wrestlecon show in Dallas, there are very few tickets left so it's best to get them now if you want to go.  The show is at 8 p.m., head-to-head with the Hall of Fame:  Matt Hardy vs. Lance Storm, Andrew Everett & Fenix & Aero Star vs. Drago & Flamita & Jack Evans, Jeff Hardy vs. Trevor Lee vs. Abyss vs. Mike Bailey vs. AR Fox in a Monster's Ball match, Team Jeff Jarrett vs. Team Joey Ryan in a 10 man match, Marty Scurll vs. Will Ospreay

  • Metamoris submission grappling returns on 7/17 in Los Angeles with Roger Gracie vs. Marcus Almeida Buchecha in the main event.  That's actually quite the awesome main event.  Other matches include Gabriel Gonzaga of UFC vs. former judo gold medalist Satoshi Ishii of Rizin, Dillon Dannis vs. Gilbert Burns of UFC, Matheus Diniz vs. Yuri Somoes and Ralek Gracie vs. Tim Spriggs.
  • Cody Garbrandt vs. Thomas Alamida was reported by John Morgan today for a 5/29 show in Las Vegas.
