WWE SmackDown live results: Gauntlet match


Tonight SmackDown features a gauntlet match to determine the new number one contender for the WWE Championship at Extreme Rules. WWE Champion AJ Styles is looking for his next challenger after defeating Shinsuke Nakamura at Money in the Bank. The gauntlet match includes Daniel Bryan, Rusev, Big E., The Miz and Samoa Joe.

This past Sunday, SmackDown Women’s Champion Carmella defeated Asuka to retain the title. She had a little help from the returning James Ellsworth. Carmella is looking to celebrate her victory tonight and is teasing another Mellabration.

For weeks, SAnitY (Eric Young, Killian Dain & Alexander Wolfe) have been teasing their arrival on SmackDown. Tonight they finally make their long anticipated debut when they take on The Usos. There will also be a Tag Team title match, with Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson again challenging The Bludgeon Brothers.

For the second year in a row, Becky Lynch was just inches away from winning the women’s Money in the Bank ladder match but was unsuccessful. She looks to regain her momentum tonight when she goes one-on-one with Billie Kay.

GM Paige kicked off SmackDown backstage. She recapped Money in the Bank and announced the participants in the Gauntlet match.

SmackDown Women’s Champion Carmella came down to the ring. She talked about growing up with self-confidence issues. She teased going face but went total heel. She laughed and noted she’s never had confidence issues and bragged about defeating Charlotte and Asuka. She claimed that she defeated Asuka all by herself and took full credit.

Asuka’s music hit and she made her way down to the ring. Asuka took off the mask to reveal James Ellsworth. Corey Graves was shocked despite it obviously being Ellsworth. Ellsworth announced that he’s back and is back to serve the greatest Women’s champion. Ellsworth said Carmella's better than everyone including Charlotte Flair, Lita, Trish Stratus, Mother Teresa, Beyoncé, Ronda Rousey and Asuka.

Asuka heard enough and she charged down to the ring. Ellsworth got is Asuka’s face but she kicked him in the stomach. Carmella took advantage and caught Asuka with a superkick. 

Backstage, Becky Lynch seemed in a good mood as she tried to decide which goggles to wear to the ring.

Becky Lynch defeated Billie Kay (w/ Peyton Royce)

Before the match, Peyton Royce did an impression of Becky Lynch and noted she’s better off as Charlotte Flair’s troll and sidekick.

Lynch was clearly not in a good mood and took it out on Kay. She had the early advantage and threw Kay around the ring. Royce distracted Lynch and Kay took over after sending her into the ring post. Lynch made a comeback and scored a close near fall. She took out Royce with a cross body off the apron. Lynch locked on the Dis-arm-her on Kay for the win.

In the back, Jeff Hardy discussed his match against Shinsuke Nakamura from last week. He said he can’t forget Nakamura’s attack but said he eyes are now open. Hardy turned to the camera to reveal black and white face paint.

Renee Young interviewed Daniel Bryan backstage and congratulated him on his win over Big Cass at Money In The Bank. Young announced that Bryan drew the short straw and will start the Gauntlet match. Bryan said that in order to win he has to defeat three of the best in wrestling, Rusev, Big E. and Samoa Joe. Young asked about The Miz and Bryan pointed out that he said the best. 

SAnitY vs. The Usos Didn't Happen

Before the match, The Usos discussed their careers in the WWE and what it took to make a name in the business. They called out SAnitY for their match. However, the match never ended up happening as SAnitY and The Usos brawled instead. SAnitY gained the advantage and gave The Usos a vicious beatdown.

Renee Young interviewed Shinsuke Nakamura backstage. Nakamura said he didn’t lose at Money In The Bank. He claimed that the referee counted too fast and not in Japanese. Young asked about Jeff Hardy’s comments earlier. Nakamura said that Hardy’s eyes might be open but if he crosses Nakamura he’ll close them.

SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Bludgeon Brothers defeated Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson

The heels isolated Gallows on their side of the ring. Rowan gave Gallows a huge superplex and attempted the pin, but Anderson made the save. Anderson got the hot tag and nailed Luke Harper with a huge spine buster for a near fall. Finish came when The Bludgeon Brothers hit the powerbomb combo for the win.

Daniel Bryan made his way to the ring for the Gauntlet match but ran into The Bludgeon Brothers. There was an intense stare down but Bryan kept walking towards the ring.

Gauntlet Match: Daniel Bryan defeated Big E.

Big E used power moves to briefly gain control but Bryan took over using submissions and mat wrestling. Big E hit a bell-to-belly suplex and splash on the apron to regain control.

Bryan executed a hurricanrana off the top turnbuckle and followed up with his running drop kicks in the corner. Bryan attempted a third drop kick but Big E rocked him with a huge clothesline. Bryan made a brief comeback but Big E nailed Bryan with a spear off the apron. Big E missed a charge in the corner and Bryan hit the running knee for the win.

Gauntlet Match: Daniel Bryan defeated Samoa Joe

Joe was firmly in control and destroyed Bryan’s chest with vicious chops. Joe hit a huge power slam for a two count. The replay showed that Bryan landed on his head. Bryan fought back and worked over Joe’s knee.

Bryan and Joe traded vicious chops in the middle of the ring. Joe locked on the Coquina Clutch but Bryan sent Joe to the floor. Bryan set up for the running knee but Joe escaped to the floor. Joe locked on the Coquina Clutch on the floor. Bryan kicked off the barricade and beat the referee’s count of 10 to win the match.

The Bludgeon Brothers came back out and attacked Bryan. They gave him the powerbomb combo.

Gauntlet Match: The Miz defeated Daniel Bryan

The Miz ran out and hit the Skull Crashing finale on a lifeless Bryan to win the match.

Gauntlet Match: Rusev (w/ Aiden English) defeated The Miz

Rusev controlled the match and hit a fall away slam for a two count. Miz regained control and slowed down the match. Rusev fought back and hit splash in the corner. He followed up with a spinning heel kick. Rusev caught Miz with a kick to the side of the ear for a near fall.

Rusev attempted the Accolade but Miz countered into a DDT. Miz attempted Bryan’s running drop kick in the corner but Rusev nailed the Machka kick. Rusev locked on the Accolade for the submission win. Rusev is the number one contender and will challenge WWE Champion AJ Styles at Extreme Rules.

Styles came out and had a brief stare down with Rusev. They shook hands. Aiden English wanted to shake AJ’s hand too but pulled away and Styles knocked him out.
