WWE SmackDown live results: Hell in a Cell build continues

WWE Champion AJ Styles and Samoa Joe continue their bitter feud tonight on SmackDown.

Styles and Joe are set to clash at Hell in a Cell in a few weeks. Last week, Joe phoned Styles’ wife, Wendy and promised to visit the Styles home tonight. Tonight's angle will show if that was an empty threat to anger Styles or a promise Joe ends up keeping.

SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair successfully defended her title against Carmella on SmackDown last week. After the match, Becky Lynch attacked Flair from behind and promised to win the Women’s title. The two are on a collision course headed towards Hell in a Cell.

The Usos take on SAnitY and Rusev & Aiden English in a triple threat tag team tournament match. The winners will advance to face The Bar in a number one contender's match for a title shot against SmackDown Tag Team Champions The New Day.

The Miz and Maryse gave Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella a vicious beatdown last week. Bryan had Andrade “Cien” Almas beat with the Yes Lock when Miz and Maryse interfered. Tonight, Bryan and Bella are looking for some payback.

Our live coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

Renee Young was in the ring and introduced Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella to kick off SmackDown. Young showed footage of Miz, Maryse, Andrade “Cien” Almas and Zelina Vega attacking Bryan and Bella last week. Young showed footage from earlier today of The Miz and Maryse in the ring in an empty arena calling out Bryan and Bella.

Bryan pointed out that Miz and Maryse jumped them from behind and went to the trouble to show up to the arena early to call them out knowing they weren’t there. Bryan called them cowards and Bella agreed. They don’t want to wait until Hell in a Cell and called out Miz and Maryse. Young informed them that Miz and Maryse left the building.

Almas and Vega came out instead. Vega thanked Young for showing the footage of the beatdown. Almas said that he enjoyed beating up Bryan so much last week he wants to do it again.

Daniel Bryan (w/Brie Bella) defeated Andrade “Cien” Almas (w/Zelina Vega)

They did some mat wrestling early with Bryan working the arm. Almas rocked Bryan with a spinning back elbow for a close near fall. Almas used the arm breaker in the ropes and launched Bryan off the apron into the barricade.

Almas missed a knee in the corner and landed on the floor. In an awesome spot, Bryan attempted the running flying knee off the apron but Almas nailed him with a drop kick. Almas briefly gained control until Bryan gave him a huge backdrop to the floor and nailed him with a suicide dive to the back.

Almas got caught in the tree of woe and Bryan nailed him with Yes Kicks. Almas attempted the moonsault but Bryan moved. Almas landed on his feet and hit a standing moonsault for a near fall. The traded stiff kicks in the middle of the ring. Bryan hit a series of Yes kicks but Almas sent him into the corner. Almas hit the double knees in the corner.

The Miz and Maryse appeared on the big screen. They’re on a date at a local Detroit Italian restaurant. Miz noted they’re not coming back to the arena so Bryan and Bella have to wait until Hell in a Cell.

Backstage, Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella were leaving the arena. They’re hungry and going out to dinner to the same local Italian restaurant as Miz and Maryse.

Tom Phillips conducted an interview with Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch. Due to the heated nature of the feud they’re in separate rooms for the interview. They’re not in front of the live crowd. Flair got a mixed reaction when introduced. Lynch got a huge pop and the crowd erupted into a “Becky” chant.

Flair is furious with Lynch’s recent actions. She wondered if Lynch wanted her to lie down at SummerSlam and hand her the title. Flair said that Lynch put herself in her shadow. Lynch promises to win the title and take her place back at the top of the SmackDown women’s division. Flair promised to beat Lynch and prove she’s the best. Lynch told her to shine up the belt and get it ready for her. Flair versus Lynch is official for Hell in a Cell.

Before the match, Kay and Royce mocked Naomi. Soon the entire roster will know they’re the future and the future is iconic.

Backstage in Paige’s office, The Miz and Maryse showed up to talk to Paige. They decided not to eat at the restaurant because it’s Detroit. They’re looking for Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella but they’re gone. Miz and Maryse acted surprised that they left. Instead, Paige put Miz in a match for later tonight.

Samoa Joe came down to the ring. Tom Phillips wondered why Joe was here since he threatened to visit the Styles homes. Joe yelled out Wendy’s name again. Joe noted that Styles must have taken him serious since he’s not there. He said that Styles is at home waiting for Joe to break in.

Joe said he’s not a monster and all he did was keep a promise to Wendy. He said Styles is home on a Tuesday night and his actions have forced Styles to care about his family. He told Styles’ daughter Annie to enjoy having her dad tuck her in. He said a very bad man is coming to beat her father for the title and is going to put him to sleep.

Styles appeared on the big screen and said threatening a man’s family is when the talking stops. Styles music hit and he ran out. They brawled in the ring and around ringside. Joe grabbed a chair but Styles nailed him with the Phenomenal Forearm off the ring steps. Styles stalked Joe with the chair but the referees stopped him. Instead, Styles hit a springboard cross body onto Joe and the referees.

Backstage, R-Truth continued to search for Carmella but this time with Tye Dillinger. They found her in the back. Truth asked Carmella to be in his corner for his match later because Miz is going to bring his wife Carmella. Dillinger pointed out he meant Maryse.

Truth told Carmella what Maryse said about her. Carmella pointed out that if it wasn't for Miz, Mayrse would still be in Montreal. Carmella stormed off. Truth noted that he's teaching Dillinger how to get in the main event on SmackDown. Dillinger was impressed.
