UFC on ESPN 2 live results: Edson Barboza vs. Justin Gaethje

The Octagon heads back to the City of Brotherly Love for the first time in nearly eight years bringing a lightweight main event with two of the most exciting fighters in the UFC.

Lightweight violence artists Edson Barboza and Justin Gaethje clash in the five-round main event that many are anticipating in being one of the best fights of the year. Barboza is coming off a knockout win over Dan Hooker in December, while Gaethje is coming off a knockout win over James Vick in August. Both are looking to get into the crowded lightweight title picture.

Also on the main card is a middleweight bout between David Branch and Jack Hermansson, a featherweight bout between Josh Emmett and Michael Johnson, and a women's strawweight bout between former title challenger Karolina Kowalkiewicz and Michelle Waterson.

> Alex Perez (#7 FLW, 21-5, 3-1 UFC) vs. Mark De La Rosa (11-1, 2-1 UFC)

Perez advancing to start and lands a nice punch combo 30 seconds in. De La Rosa targeting the lead leg with kicks. Perez with the first takedown attempt resulting in a cage clinch that he controls. Perez completes the takedown 3 minutes in. Perez landing punches to the body as De La Rosa attempts a Kimura from his back. Perez breaks free and lands hard punches to the head from half guard. De La Rosa does land some elbows from his back but eats more punches and elbows from Perez. 10-9 Perez. New scoring not in effect for this show or it could've been a 10-8

De La Rosa landing leg kicks early. Perez gets a takedown and immediately takes the back. Perez with a 28-0 advantage in significant ground strikes landed. De La Rosa works him back to guard 2 minutes in. De La Rosa attempting to tie him up with a body lock but Perez still landing punches to the head and body. Ref warns them to stay busy with a minute left. 10-9 Perez, 20-18

De La Rosa again throwing leg kicks early, which is really the only effective offence he's had. Perez stumbles after eating a hard one a minute in but still landing nice punches from distance. Perez also landing leg kicks. Significant strikes landed are 75-19 for Perez. De La Rosa blocked on a takedown attempt. Perez continuing to land leg kicks and De La Rosa's lead knee has significant damage. Perez gets a takedown with just under 90 seconds left and immediately lands punches to the body. Perez landing hard punches to the head as well. 10-9 Perez, 30-27 overall

Official result - Alex Perez (22-5) by unanimous decision (30-27 x 3)

Perez said he wouldn't commit to staying at bantamweight and would take a fight in whatever division offered him the best fight. 

> Sabina Mazo (6-0, 0-0 UFC) vs. Maryna Moroz (8-3, 3-3 UFC)
Women's Flyweights

Moroz blocked on a takedown attempt to open the fight. Moreoz with another attempt and ends up controlling a cage clinch. Mazo bleeding less than a minute in and it may have been a clash of heads. Moroz completes the takedown a mintue in. Mazo tying her up with a body lock. Moroz stands up with 90 seconds left but Mazo stays on her back so Moroz goes right back into her guard. Mazo gets to her feet with 75 seconds left. Moroz with another takedown attempt with 30 seconds left stuffed by Mazo. 10-9 Moroz

Moroz landing kicks and punches early and tries to clinch up on the cage but Mazo breaks free. Mazo landing kicks from distance. Moroz back to the cage clinch a minute in. Mazo bleeding heavily from the nose again. Mazo breaks free halfway through the round. Moroz throwing a lot of punches but most of them are missing, as is typical in her fights. Moroz back to the cage clinch with a minute left. 10-9 Moroz, 20-18 overall

Moroz goes right to the cage clinch to open the round. Mazo manages to separate as she is trying to stay out of the range of Moroz. Mazo throwing more kicks in round 3 but still eating punches. Mazo lands a nice knee as Moroz tries to move in. Moroz goes back to the cage clinch halfway through the round. They separate with 90 seconds left and Moroz wasn't able to do much damage in that sequence. Mazo lands a nice body kick with a minute left. 10-9 Mazo, 29-28 Moroz overall

> Ray Borg (#3 FLW, 11-3, 5-3 UFC) vs. Casey Kenney (11-1-1, 0-0 UFC)
Bantamweights* (Borg missed weight by 1.75 pounds)

Kenney took this fight on Monday after fighting in LFA a week ago Friday. Borg opens up by going to the cage clinch. Kenney takes control and landing knees to the body. Kenney gets a takedown at 90 seconds. Borg working for a Kimura from his back but doesn't have the right angle. Borg gives up his back halfway through the round. Kenney secures the body lock and attempting a rear naked choke but Borg scrambles to his feet and ends up in control of a cage clinch. Kenney with elbows to the head but Borg picks him and gets a slam takedown. Kenney to his feet quickly and controlling the cage clinch. Kenney gets him down and takes the back with a minute left. Borg quickly to his feet but Kenney still controlling the body. Kenney gets him down again but Borg scrambles into top position with 15 seconds left. Borg landing punches to the head as the round ends. 10-9 Kenney but Borg made it close at the end. 

Borg opens the round by going to the cage clinch again. Borg takes the back standing but Kenney quickly works out of that and they fight for clinch control. Kenney landing hard elbows to the head as Borg works for the takedown. Borg picks him up and slams him down. Borg takes the back as Kenney makes his way to the feet. Borg working for an armlock but Kenney takes control on the ground and ends up in top position. Borg to his feet at 3:30 but Kenney still controlling his body. Kenney landing knees to the body. Borg breaks free and lands a nice punch combo with 30 seconds left. Borg gets another slam takedown and then takes the back. Borg with a choke attempt as the round ends. 10-9 Borg, 19-19

Borg gets a slam takedown early but Kenney quickly gets to his feet and controlling the clinch. Kenney takes the back standing 2 minutes in. Borg quickly works around to front position and takes control. Borg gets a takedown at 2:15. Borg takes the back but Kenney gets to his feet. Borg still on his back with a body lock secured. Kenney shakes him off and ends up in top position on the ground. Kenney controlling the back at 3:00 and working for a neck crank. Borg scrambles to his feet at 3:30 and controlling the clinch. Borg gets him down briefly. Borg controlling the back standing and then takes him down again. Kenney quickly to his feet but Borg still controlling the body. They separate and Borg lands a nice punch/kick combo. Kenney cut over his right eye. Great punch exchange to close the fight. 10-9 Borg, 29-28 overall

Official result - Casey Kenney (12-1-1) by unanimous decision (30-27; 29-28 x 2)

Crowd booed the hell out of this decision. Last two rounds were very close so it wasn't a bad score at all, even though I had it the other way. Kenney wasn't terribly gracious in his post-fight promo as people were booing, saying Borg did nothing but hold him against the fence the whole fight. 


> Kevin Holland (14-4, 1-1 UFC) vs. Gerald Meerschaert (28-10, 4-2 UFC)

Holland throwing kicks from distance to open. Meerschaert gets a takedown less than 30 seconds in. Holland with a guillotine choke from his back. Meerschaert escapes the choke but Holland gets to his feet at 1:30. Holland then takes Meerschaert down. Meerschaert now with his own guillotine attempt and he moves into top position while still holding onto the choke. Holland escapes and to his feet. Meerschaert attempts to take the back but Holland slides him off and ends up in top position. Both to their feet with 90 seconds left. Meerschaert takes him down and controlling the back. Holland to his feet but Meerschaert on his back with a choke. Holland reverses and takes the back, dragging him down. Holland gives up the choke but lands punches and elbows to the head. Holland into mount and Meerschaert gives up his back. Holland landing elbows to the head with 30 seconds left. Meerschaert gives up his back. Holland secures a choke but gives up and lands punches as the round ends. 10-9 Holland

Meerschaert catches a kick early and takes Holland down. Holland to his feet but Meerschaert still controlling him. Meerschart briefly gets him down but Holland scrambles into top position. Holland with a front choke but Meerschaert ends up on top and transitions to a Von Flue choke but gives it up quickly. Holland secures a body lock from his back. Meerschaert breaks it and to his feet but Holland throws up a triangle. Meerschaert fights that off and briefly takes the back but Holland scrambles to top position. Both guys to their feet at 3:45 and Meerschaert takes him down again. Meerschaert takes the back. Meerschaert landing punches to the head with 30 seconds left. Holland scrambles into top position and secures mount. Meerschaert gives up his back and eating elbows and punches. 10-9 Meerschaert, 19-19 overall but Holland made it close at the end. 

Holland takes the back standing 30 seconds in and then drags him to the ground. Meerschaert with an arm in guillotine choke from the bottom. Holland escapes and stands up. Meerschaert stays on the ground and Holland landing punches to the head while controlling his back. Meerschaert scrambles into top position at 2:15. Meerschaert landing punches at 2:45. Holland gives up his back to get to his feet. Meerschaert controlling the cage clinch. Ref warns them to work with 2 minutes left. Meerschaert takes him down again with a minute left. Holland with another choke attempt from his back but gives it up quickly. Significant strikes landed are 46-20 for Holland. Holland to his feet with 30 seconds left. Meerschaert controlling the clinch. They break away before the buzzer and Meerschaert lands a punch combo. 10-9 Meerschaert, 29-28 overall

All three rounds were close so any score was okay, except maybe the 29-27 since especially with the new scoring, none of those rounds were 10-8. Holland apologized for the boring fight and asked for an opponent he could have an exciting fight with next time so he could make the ESPN video game. He said he'll fight on the next card if they ask him to. 

> Enrique Barzola (15-3-1, 5-1 UFC) vs. Kevin Aguilar (16-1, 1-0 UFC)

Both guys keeping their distance early. Aguilar lands a kick to the groin with one of the first strikes landed. Punch/kick combo rom Aguilar on the restart. Barzola controlling the pace but neither guy landing much for the first half of the round. Aguilar starting to land the occasional kick and punch from distance. Barzola attempts a takedown with a minute left but stuffed. Nice punch/kick combo from Aguilar with 30 seconds left. 10-9 Aguilar

Aguilar landing more punches early and Barzola attempts a takedown but stuffed. Aguilar with a 37-19 advantage in significant strikes landed. Barzola briefly takes Aguilar down at 1:30 but he gets up immediately. Aguilar continuing to land punches from distance. Barzola starting to close distance in the second half of the round but Aguilar landing as much, if not more. Barzola iwth another takedown attempt stuffed with 45 seconds left. 10-9 Aguilar, 20-18

Aguilar continuing to land hard punches from distance to start the round. He now has a 36-11 advantage in significant head strikes landed. Crowd is completely bored and randomly whooing and whistling. Barzola with a punch combo and takedown atttempt 2 minutes in, but stuffed. Aguilar with a total of 7 takedowns defended through 12 minutes. Aguilar with kicks to the head and body. Barzola is landing more strikes this round though. Barzola attempts to cage clinch with 15 seconds left but they separate. Barzola lands a flying knee before the buzzer. 10-9 Aguilar, 30-27

That was Aguilar's 9th straight win and he asked for a top 15 fighter next time out in his post fight promo. 

> Ross Pearson (20-15 1 NC, 12-12 1 NC UFC) vs. Desmond Green (21-8, 2-3 UFC)

Both guys throwing a lot of kicks early but keeping their distance. Green knocks PEarson down with a punch at 1:30 but he gets up quickly. Green stuffed on a takedown attempt. Green catches a leg and attempts a takedown but Green defends well. Green gets a takedown at 2:45 and landinga ton of punches and the ref stops it.

> Marina Rodriguez (11-0-1, 0-0-1 UFC) vs. Jessica Aguilar (20-7, 1-3 UFC)
Women's Strawweights

Aguilar poked in the eye early in the fight. Aguilar closing the distance with punches and initiates a cage clinch. Aguilar landing knees to the body. Aguilar bleeding from the nose as she ate a shot while moving in for the clinch. They break at 1:45 and then Aguilar knocks her down. Rodriguez landing elbows from the bottom and throws up a triangle. Aguilar is leaking blood all over the body of Rodriguez. Rodriguez reverses position and ends up on top but Aguilar with a triangle attempt. Rodriguez stands up and slams Aguilar onto her head but that just tightens the triangle. Rodriguez transitions to a belly-down armbar. Rodriguez manages to fight it off and they end up in a reverse north/south position with Aguilar on her stomach and Rodriguez face down across her back. Ref stands them up at 4:15 as they weren't going anywhere. Aguilar poked in the eye again with 30 seconds left and Rodriguez loses a point. Rodriguez knocks Aguilar down with a punch on the restart and backs her up to the fence with 15 seocnds left after she gets up. 9-9 with the point deduction

Aguilar controlling the pace to start round 2. She tries to clinch up but Rodriguez pushes her off. Aguilar with a punch combo 90 seconds in. Aguilar still bleeidng like crazy from her nose, which is probably broken. Rodriguez lands a Superman punch. Rodriguez in control of a cage clinch and lands hard knees to the body before Aguilar breaks free. Rodriguez lands knees and kicks and then backs up Aguilar to the cage with elbows to the head and body. Rodriguez all over her with punches against the cage. Rodriguez with knees to the body but Aguilar stays on her feet. Rodriguez with hard knees to the body and head but Aguilar stays up and actually takes control of the clinch. 10-9 Rodriguez, very nearly a 10-8 and 19-18 overall

Rodriguez with a punch/knee combo, targeting the body. Rodriguez with knees to the body and elbows to the head as Aguilar moves in to land punches. Rodriguez with a 43-15 advantage in kicks and knees landed. Aguilar gets off some nice punches at 3:30 but Rodriguez lands more knees. Aguilar taking a ton of punishment but never stops moving forward and landing shots of her own. 10-9 Rodriguez, 29-27 overall

Rodriguez said she took some damage in this fight but wants to get back in the Octagon as soon as possible. 


> Sodiq Yusuff (8-1, 1-0 UFC) vs. Sheymon Moraes (11-2, 2-1 UFC)

Yusuff advancing to start. Yusuff landing hard kicks to the lead leg. Yusuff with a nice punch combo to the body and head and then initiates a cage clinch. Ref breaks them up with 2 minutes left as not much happening. Leg kicks really starting to bother Moraes. Yusuff goes back to the cage with a minute left. Moraes takes control with 30 seconds left. 10-9 Yusuff

Yusuff goes right back to the clinch to start round 2. They break free and Moraes taking a few more chances now, throwing wild strikes. They don't connect at first but it keeps Yusuff thinking. Kick/punch combo from Moraes after catching a kick at 1:30 and now Moraes controlling a cage clinch. Punch/kick combo from Moraes at 2:00. Moraes back to the cage clinch at 2:45. They separate with 2 minutes left. Yusuff with a punch combo but Moraes goes right back to the cage clinch. Yusuff with a trip takedown but Moraes right up. Significant strikes are 40-34 for Yusuff. Moraes throwing a lot of head kicks but none of them really connect. 10-9 Moraes, 19-19

Yusuff goes back to the cage clinch after landing a punch combo. Quick separation. Yusuff going back to the leg kicks early in round 3. Body strikes are 31-15 for Yusuff. Crowd getting bored as not much happening. Kick/punch combo from Yusuff with 2 minutes left. Great punch exchange at 3:15 after Moraes lands a nice elbow to the head. Yusuff knocks Moraes down with a hard body shot and then all over him with punches. Yusuff in mount with a minute left but Moraes fights him off and gets to his feet. Moraes swinging for the fences but Yusuff stalking him. Crowd explodes. Yusuff back tot he cage clinch. 10-9 Yusuff, 29-28 overall

Yusuff quoted his countryman Kamara Usman by saying that he was only 30% for this fight. He then called out Kron Gracie for a fight in the future. 

> Kennedy Nzechukwu (6-0, 0-0 UFC) vs. Paul Craig (10-3, 2-3 UFC)
Light Heavyweights

Kennedy pushing the pace early. Knee to the body seemed to hurt Craig and he moves in for a takedown. Kennedy with hard elbows and punches to the head and Craig is busted open. Craig pulls guard and secures an armbar. Looked like it might have dislocated but Kennedy escapes. Craig pulls guard again and goes for the armbar but Kennedy escapes. Craig with a third armbar and Kennedy stands up and backs off, forcing Craig up. Craig with a takedown attempt and tries to pull guard but Kennedy backs off and Craig has to stand. Craig with a takedown attempt but again eating hard elbows to the head. Craig controlling a cage clinch. Craig pulls guard again and goes for a kneebar. Crowd booing this now. Kennedy escapes and backs off with a minute left, forcing Craig up. Craig with a nice punch combo standing but eats a hard high kick from Kennedy that drops him. Kennedy backs up, forcing him to stand. 10-9 Nzechukwu

Craig with a takedown attempt 30 seconds in and then lands a nice punch/elbow combo after giving it up. Another failed attempt and Kennedy with elbows to the body. Craig drags him down but Kennedy ends up on top at 1:30. Kennedy dropping hard elbows to the head. More elbows from Kennedy and then he stands up and backs off, forcing Craig up. Craig advancing. Kennedy wanred for extending his fingers. Craig nails him with a low blow and looked completely intentional. Kennedy advancing on the restart. Kennedy with a 29-14 advantage in significant strikes landed. Kennedy stalking Craig in the last minute. 10-9 Nzechukwu, 20-18

Kennedy stalking Craig at the start of round 3 and Craig not really wanting to engage. Crowd is turning on this fight. Kennedy pokes Craig in the eye and Craig goes down like he's been shot. He was warned earlier. Ref docks a point and then tells him that if he doesn't close the hands, the fight will be over, I guess implying a DQ. Craig misses badly on a takedown attempt on the restart. Craig with a single leg attempt that Kennedy defends. He's 1/15 on takedown attempts. Kennedy ends up on top after stuffing another atttempt at 3:00. Kennedy into side control and landing hard elbows to the head. Craig works him back to half guard and then to full guard. Kennedy landing hard punches to the head. Craig firing back with punches from the bottom. Craig with a triangle attempt that Kennedy gets out of easily. Craig with an armbar and gets the tap.

This was the 2nd time in 3 fights that Craig was losing a fight badly and submitted his opponent in the last minute. He compared himself to Rocky in his post-fight promo. He even quoted Rocky with the "Yo Adrian" promo. 

> Karolina Kowalkiewicz (#6, 12-3, 5-3 UFC) vs. Michelle Waterson (#9, 16-6, 4-2 UFC)
Women's Strawweights

KK controlling the pace to start. Waterson doing a good job early of hitting shots and then backing off. KK keeping her distance after eating some strikes early. Loud USA chants for Waterson. Waterson connecting with kicks from distance. Karolina starting to land punches with 90 seconds left. Karolina initiates a cage clinch with 45 seconds left. Waterson breaks free quickly. They clinch and Karolina lands knees to the body. 10-9 Waterson

Waterson landing kicks to the knees in the first minute. Nice punch/kick combo from Karolina that clearly affected Waterson. Waterson continuing to throw the hard leg kicks and crowd reacting to every one. Waterson gets a judo takedown and lands right in side control 2 minutes in. Waterson landing hard elbows to the head and body. Karolina attempting submissions from her back but she doesn't have the position. Knees to the body from Karolina, who is still on her back. Waterson with an armbar  with 30 seconds left. Karolina trying to roll away to relieve pressure and rides out the round. 10-9 Waterson, 20-18

Waterson with a 27-12 advantage in significant head strikes landed. Karolina advancing to start round 3. Karolina with a nice kick combo 2 minutes in. Karolina takes it to the cage clinch at 2:15. They trade knees to the body and Waterson takes control at 2:45 and then separates. Waterson gets a takedown at 3:15. Waterson stands up and Karolina follows at 3:45. Waterson lands a hard elbow to the head with 45 seconds left. 10-9 Waterson, 30-27

Official result - Michelle Waterson (17-6) by official decision (30-27 x 3)

Waterson dedicated the fight to all parents who are out there fighting for their families. She asked for a shot at the winner of the upcoming strawweight title fight and said she'll become a "mom-champ". 

> Josh Emmett (#10, 13-2, 4-2 UFC) vs. Michael Johnson (19-13, 11-9 UFC)

Both guys keeping apart early. Emmett with a couple of takedown attempts but didn't even get close on them. Johnson lands some punches 2 minutes in that may have been his first of the fight. Crowd is bored with this fight as nothing is happening. Emmett with another takedown stuffed with a minute left. Emmett manages to land a couple of punches with 15 seconds left. 10-9 Johnson, but really close 

Fighters are both engaging a little more at the start of round 2 with both landing punches early. Johnson pushing the pace after Emmett did so for most of the first round. Nice punch combo from Johnson 90 seconds in. Lot of boos coming from the crowd as they're starting to keep their distance again. Both guys landing less than 30 percent of strikes landed.....and they're not throwing that many to begin with.Johnson with an 18-10 advantage in significant strikes landed through 9 minutes. I've seen fights with that many strikes landed in 1 minute. Emmett nails Johnson with a low blow with 15 seconds left but then eats a hard punch to the head on the restart. Johnson defends a takedown attempt at the end of the round. 10-9 Johnson, 20-18

Johnson defends a takedown a minute into round 3. Johnson with a 22-6 advantage in significant head strikes landed through 14 minutes. More loud boos from the crowd as again, nothing is happening except for one guy following the other around and neither guy landing anything. Emmett is landing occasional leg kicks. Johnson missing on most of the punches he's throwing this round. Emmett knocks Johnson out cold with a punch out of nowhere. It was an overhand right that connected perfectly and Johnson was out before he hit the canvas, flat on his back.

Emmett begged for a Fight of the Night bonus. That usually doesn't work but in this case it almost has to. 

> David Branch (#11, 22-5, 4-4 UFC) vs. Jack Hermansson (18-4, 5-2 UFC)

Hermansson pushing forward to start and landing hard leg kicks. Branch firing back with punches. Hermansson gets a takedown 30 seconds in and right into side control. Hermansson with a guillotine and gets the quick tap.

Hermansson was so happy during the winner's announcement. Philly fans booed him like crazy. They didnt' even subsite much when he called them the best fans in the world. This was his third straight win and most high-profile fight so should be ranked after this. He promised to win the belt within a year and wants an opponent that will get him closer to a title shot. 

> Edson Barboza (#6, 20-6, 14-6 UFC) vs. Justin Gaethje (#8, 19-2, 2-2 UFC)

Gaethje throwing leg kicks early. Barboza answering back with kicks of his own. GAETHJE chants from the crowd after they booed both guys in the intros. Gaethje backs up Barboza with punches and he's in trouble. Barboza nails him flush with a knee to the head and they clinch on the cage. They separate at 1:30 after both guys landed hard punches in the clinch. Barboza landing kicks to the body. Both guys land hard punches in a great exchange 2:00 in. Crowd is going crazy. Gaethje knocks Barboza out cold with a punch and he falls flat on his back.

Gaethje complained about Donald Cerrone moving ahead of him in the rankings and said he wants to fight every guy ranked ahead of him. He said he feeds off the fans and was proud to represent USA against Brazil's finest tonight. He said he would not recommed this sport to his enemy but he was born to do it and he'll keep fighting until the wheels falls off. Great promo.
