UFC on ESPN+ 29 live results: Anthony Smith vs. Glover Teixeira

The second of three UFC events over eight days in Jacksonville features a light heavyweight main event between two former title challengers looking to get another crack at the title.

Anthony Smith looks to get his second straight win when he takes on Glover Teixeira in the five-round headliner at 205 pounds. Smith has been out of action since a June win over Alexander Gustafsson, and is just two fights removed from challenging Jon Jones for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. Teixeira comes into the fight riding a three-fight win streak and is looking to break back into the top five at 205 pounds and get another title shot.

In the co-main event, Ben Rothwell welcomes the challenge of Ovince Saint Preux, who is going up to heavyweight for this fight. Also on the main card is a battle of rising lightweights as Alexander Hernandez takes on Drew Dober.

> Chase Sherman (14-6, 2-5 UFC) vs. Isaac Villanueva (16-9, 0-0 UFC)

Villanueva got the call last Friday that he'd be fighting today for his UFC debut. Both guys throwing a lot of punches early and Villanueva cut on his nose. Sherman landing hard leg kicks. Sherman pushing the action for most of the round. Sherman with a 22-10 advantage in strikes landed in the first 4 minutes. Sherman with a huge combo that rocks Villanueva with 45 seconds left. Sherman teeing off on him late in the round. Villanueva has a k:not on the front of his lead leg at the end of the round. 10-9 Sherman

Sherman finished the round with 41 strikes landed and comes out firing in the second, landing a nice combo including a knee to the body. He rocked him with punches in the corner and finished him on the ground shortly after.

> Hunter Azure (8-0, 1-0 UFC) vs. Brian Kelleher (20-10, 4-3 UFC)

Azure throwing a lot of punches early. Kellher focusing on leg kicks for the most part. Azure landing most of his punches in combos and mixing in leg kicks as the round goes on. Kelleher attempting takedowns but blocked easily by Azure. Azure with a 13-2 advantage in head strikes landed through 3 1/2 minutes. Kelleher initiates a cage clinch. 10-9 Azure

Round 2 starts the same but Kelleher really seems to be trying to tie him up but eating shots in the process. Azure mixing in more leg kicks as well. Azure landed more strikes in the first half of the fight than he did in his UFC debut, which went 15 minutes. Azure in control of a cage clinch 3 minutes in. He may be starting to tire. Kelleher breaks free but eats a leg kick on the way out. Kelleher with a nice kick/punch combo. Kelleher knocks him down with a left hook and finishes him with a hard punch on the ground.

Kelleher asked for a fight with Sean O'Malley. He's a big name and a good call-out. 

> Gabriel Benitez (21-7, 5-3 UFC) vs. Omar Morales (9-0, 1-0 UFC)

Benitez pushing the action early. Morales takes over in the 2nd minute but neither guy landing much, more of a feeling out process. Morales lands a nice head kick after a jab. Benitez throwing more leg kicks than anything else. Nice punch combo from Benitez. Morales going to the head kick a lot and Benitez starting to be affected by it. Punch opens a cut under Morales' left eye. Benitez bleeding from his forehead as the kicks are doing damage as well as jabs. Morales really starting to time the jabs late in the round. Great combo from Benitez with 30 seconds left including a nice body shot. 10-9 Morales

Benitez throwing a lot of kicks to start round 2. Morales checking most of them. Both land hard body kicks and both have severe reddening on their midsections. All the exchanges are seeing both guys land hard shots but no clear advantage for either of them in the first half of the round. Morales lands a hard right and then a body kick that backs up Benitez. Benitez with a late takedown right at the buzzer. Very close round. 10-9 Benitez, 19-19 overall

Benitez' leg is damaged from the leg kicks. Total strikes are 35-33 Morales through 2 rounds. Benitez seems more aggressive to start the round and throwing a lot of different kicks. Cut under Morales' eye has opened up again. Morales landing a lot of body kicks. Benitez with a really nice body shot. Benitez landing occasional head kicks but Benitez is starting to connect more with the punches. Benitez with a 21-20 advantage in strikes landed in the 3rd round so it's anyone's fight with just over a minute left. Morales pushing forward in the last minute and seems to be landing more. Nice punch combo by Morales with 30 seconds left. Benitez with a body punch/kick combo. Morales with a punch combo to close the round. Very close. 10-9 Morales, 29-28 overall

> Sijara Eubanks (#15, 4-4, 2-2 UFC) vs. Sarah Moras (6-5, 3-4 UFC)
Women's Bantamweights

Eubanks lands some hard punches to the head early followed by a high kick. Eubanks giving up a lot of size as Moras looks at least a weight class bigger. More punches from Eubanks. Moras weathering it well though. Eubanks with a combo including punches to the body at 2:30. Eubanks with an 18-6 advantage in head strikes landed with 90 seconds left in the round. Moras with loud grunting every time she's throwing anything, which is a bit of a tell for Eubanks. Moras with a nice combo before the bell. 10-9 Eubanks

Moras starts the round with a takedown attempt and they end up in a cage clinch fighting for control but break free 45 seconds in. Moras throwing more punches in this round. Eubanks throwing punches too but missing on more of them. Moras backs up Eubanks with a punch combo. Thai clinch in the center midway through the round. Eubanks throwing knees to the body while Moras landing body punches. Moras with some elbows to the head from the clinch. Total strikes so far in round 2 are 32-30 for Moras. Eubanks blocks a takedown and Moras ends up on her back. Moras ties her up in guard and lands elbows to the head from her back. Moras working for a triangle and an armbar but Eubanks works out of it and into half guard. Eubanks landing hard punches on the ground with 30 seconds left and elbows as well. Eubanks into mount with 15 seconds left. Moras gives up her back and punches to the head by Eubanks to close the round. 10-9 Eubanks, 20-18

Both ladies landing a lot of punches early in round 3 but Eubanks is landing the harder shots. Nice head kick/punch combo from Moras at 1:30 and she tries to tie up Eubanks in the center again. Eubanks with knees to the head and backs her up to the cage. They break free and trade punches in the center. Superwoman punch from Eubanks rocks Moras and she's bleeding from the nose. Takedown by Eubanks at 3:00. Moras landing punches and elbows from her back. Moras with an armbar attempt with 90 seconds left. Eubanks escapes and into half guard with 30 seconds left. Eubanks into side control and landing hammer fists with 15 seconds left. Moras gives up her back and more punches from Eubanks as the round ends. 10-9 Eubanks, 30-27 overall

> Michael Johnson (19-15, 11-11 UFC) vs. Thiago Moises (12-4, 1-2 UFC)

Moises pushing the pace to start round 1. Moises throwing leg kicks to start while Johnson using punches. Moises stuffed on a takedown attempt. Not a ton of action in the first two minutes with both guys keeping their distance. Johnson taking over Octagon control. Johnson with a punch combo that backs up Moises. Johnson landing a lot of punches and kicks and Moises reeling in the latter part of the round. Johnson with a 20-3 advantage in significant strikes landed. More punch combos from Johnson. Johnson backs him up again with punchs as the round ends. 10-9 Johnson...almost a 10-8, really

Moises shoots for a takedown to start but ends up on his back. Moises grabs a heel hook and Johnson taps quickly but ref Keith Peterson missed it at first and Johnson tapping furiously.

Moises kept bringing up how Johnson was ranked #6 in the past and then called out Anthony Pettis who said he wants to move back to 155. 

> Andrei Arlovski (28-19 2 NC, 17-13 1 NC UFC) vs. Philipe Lins (14-3, 0-0 UFC)

Both throwing leg kicks to start. Lins advancing and starting to throw punch combos. Nice punch combo from Lins at 1:30 but Arlvoski takes it well. Lins backs up Arlovski with a power right hand. Lins countering with combos every time Arlvoski tries to throw anything. Lins initiates a cage clinch but Arlovski breaks free quickly. Arlvoski lands his first good combo in the last minute. Lins still advancing as the round ends. 10-9 Lins

Lins advancing again and lands a body kick to start the round. Nice punch combo from Arlovski. Lins backs up Arlovski with a hard right. Arlovski with a nice elbow to the head off a clinch attempt. Significant strikes are even two minutes into the 2nd round. Nice punch combo from Lins. Arlovski landing leg kicks. Lins lands a hard kick to the balls that really hurts Arlovski. Herb Dean gives Lins a hard warning. Both guys landing hard shots in the last minute. Arlovski focusing on the body while Lins just throwing for hte fences. 10-9 Arlovski, 19-19 overall

Arlovski with 35 distance strikes landed through 2 rounds. Lins with a nice punch combo 30 seconds in. Arlovski with a kick combo. Lins rocks Arlovski with a punch combo and he looks to have gained a second wind after slowing down in the 2nd. Clinch in the center and Arlovski lands an elbow to the head to break it up. Lins lands another punch combo. Arlovski with a 50-32 advantage in significant strikes landed and 14-7 in the 3rd round. Arlovski advancing to end the fight. 10-9 Arlovski, 29-28 overall

> Ricky Simon (15-3, 3-2 UFC) vs. Ray Borg (13-4, 7-4 UFC)

Simon landing a lot of punches early and bouncing all over the place. Borg weathering it well and throws some punches of his own. Simon with a takedown a minute in and landing punches to the body. Borg gets to his feet but Simon still controlling the cage clinch. Borg grabs a guillotine and pulls Simon down but he escapes and ends up back on top. Borg back up again without taking damage and lands a nice punch combo. Simon with a leg kick and follows up with a nice punch combo. Borg answers back with one of his own. Borg with a punch combo and rushes in for a takedown. Simon gets one instead. Cormier commented on how big Simon looked and he flexed in the middle of the fight so he obviously heard him. Borg to his feet but Simon controlling his back and landing kicks to the thigh. Simon takes him down again with 30 seconds left. Simon moves into side control and landing elbows as the round ends. 10-9 Simon

Simon with a 23-7 advantage in significant strikes landed as well as 4 takedowns. Borg pushing the pace to start the 2nd and tries a takedown but Simon blocks it and lifts up Borg for a takedown of his own. Simon landing shoulder strikes on the ground. Borg to his feet but eats elbows to the head on his way up. Borg landing more than he did in the first. Borg starting to back up Simon after landing his combos. Borg defends a takedown attempt and lands more punches. Simon with a 21-2 advantage in body strikes landed. Borg lands a great punch combo with 90 seconds left. Simon takes the back standing and gets a takedown. Simon controlling his back on the ground. Borg to his feet but Simon landing knees to the thighs. Borg works him back to front position. Simon takes the back again and takes him down but Borg right up. Borg rocks Simon with a punch combo and then shots to the body. Close round. 10-9 Borg, 19-19 overall

Simon quickly into side control but not doing anything. Borg landing punches and elbows from his back. Borg gives up his back and then flips around into top position. Borg tries to get to his feet but Simon takes him down again. Borg right up but Simon controlling his back. Simon works him back to front position but Simon controlling the clinch. They break free with 90 seconds left. Borg with a punch combo. Borg lands a nice head kick. Borg defends a takedown attempt with 45 seconds left. Simon blocks a flying knee attempt. Borg with another punch combo. Borg with more punches in the last 15 seconds. Another close round. 10-9 Borg, 29-28 overall

> Alexander Hernandez (#15, 11-2, 3-1 UFC) vs. Drew Dober (22-8 1 NC, 8-4 1 NC UFC)

Hernandez throwing a lot of wild kicks and punches early. Dober more measured and controlling the pace. Hernandez gets a takedown. Dober up quickly. Hernandez with knees to the body while controlling the clinch. Dober with a nice punch combo as he controls the pace after they separate. Great punch exchange with both guys landing hard shots with 2 minutes left. Hernandez bleeding from a cut around his right eye. Dober stuffs a takedown attempt. Dober continuing to advance and landing hard shots. Hernandez reeling in the last minute. 10-9 Dober

Dober poked in the eye at the start of the round. This was after Hernandez had the same thing happen to him at the end of the first. It was almost like payback. Dober comes out firing with punches as he continues to press the pace as he did in the first. Dober defends another takedown and lands a nice knee to the body. Dober seems to be landing combos at will. Significant strikes are 28-28 through 7 minutes but it seems like Dober's shots are landing a lot harder. They trade leg kicks and Dober lands another punch combo. Dober knocks down Hernandez with punches but he gets right up. Dober firing shots and Hernandez gets a desparation takedown. Dober landing elbows to the head from his back. Hernandez controlling him and landing punches. Dober gets up fairly easily and advancing again. Dober picking him off with punches. Hernandez looks out on his feet but gets another takedown. Dober right up and firing away and Herb Dean stops it.

Dober was asked who he'd like to fight next. He mentioned Justin Gaethje. As if. Actually they train together but it came off like a callout.  But then he mentioned Paul Felder, who was on commentary and that's a more realistic option and might be a good fight to make. 

> Ben Rothwell (37-12, 7-6 UFC) vs. Ovince Saint Preux (24-13, 12-8 UFC)

OSP moving up to heavyweight after years at 205. Rothwell pushing the pace early in the fight but both guys keeping way apart from each other. Rothwell gets off a nice punch combo. OSP lands a head kick. More punches from Rothwell but OSP doesn't seem too affected. OSP doing a lot of running away. Rothwell with a front choke and gets OSP down to his knees. Rothwell landing punches to the body as he holds the choke. Ref warns them to work as action has kind of stalled in the last minute. Rothwell landing punches to the head and body. OSP gets to his feet with 20 seconds left. 10-9 Rothwell

OSP lands a body kick to start the round. Rothwell continuing to advance. OSP throwing more punches this round. Great punch combo from Rothwell. Rothwell backs up OSP with more punches and they are clinched on the cage with Rothwell in control. OSP breaks free quickly. Head strikes are 19-3 for Rothwell. Rothwell with a hard body kick and OSP winces from it. OSP controlling a cage clinch and landing uppercuts but Rothwell takes control and landing knees to the head. OSP gets out of that quickly. OSP lands a nice left hook but Rothwell no sells it. OSP starting to get tired. Rothwell backs him up to the cage again and OSP bleeding from his nose. OSP defends a takedown attempt. Rothwell with knees to the thighs from the clinch. OSP breaks free and lands a head kick. OSP knocks Rothwell down with a counter punch but he gets right up. OSP closes the round in control of a cage clinch. 10-9 Rothwell but the late knockdown could sway the judges. 

Rothwell advancing again to start round 3. OSP throwing more punches this round. Rothwell clinches on the cage and landing hard knees to the head and body. OSP lands a hard uppercut to break away. OSP with a nice punch combo. Rothwell answers back with one of his own and also lands a nice high kick. Rothwell with a body shot and clinches up to land knees to the body. OSP trying to break away by throwing uppercuts but Rothwell holding him against the cage. OSP breathing really hard. Ref warns them to work as action in the clinch stalls. Ref warns them again but OSP separates on his own with 2 minutes left. OSP with a left hook and uppercut. Rothwell firing back with punches to the head. OSP definitely landing hard but Rothwell doesn't seem affected at all and still marching forward. Rothwell back to the clinch with just over a minute left. Significant strikes are 47-47. Rothwell landing punches to the body but basically just holding OSP against the cage. OSP breaks free with 20 seconds left and landing punches. OSP continuing to land punches as the fight ends and Rothwell goes down. 10-9 Saint Preux, 29-28 Rothwell overall

Rothwell asked for a fight with Aleksei Oleinik, who just beat a former champion. Seems like it would be a step back for Oleinik but it's an intrMiguing fight. Great that everyone seems to have a name on their mind to call out tonight.

Light Heavyweights

Smith advancing early and throws the first punches and kicks. Teixeira eating a lot of punches and hasn't even thrown much. He's cut around his right eye and bleeding just over a minute in. Smith mixing in hard leg kicks. Teixeira takes over cage control but it doesn't slow down Smith. Teixeira lands his first punches but eats another combo. Teixeira tries a takedown but defended by Smith. Smith hit with a low punch, causing a break. Smith takes his time recovering and comes out firing with punches right away. Teixeira bleeding from a cut on the nose now. Smith landing punches and kicks at will. Nothing fight ending or anything but a lot of volume. Teixeira starting to land shots of his own but eating 4 shots to every 1. Head kick from Smith backs up Teixeira. Teixeira backs up Smith with punches but he gets away with 15 seconds left. 10-9 Smith

Smith is reeling but comes out firing. Smith breathing heavily. Teixeira firing away with hard shots and most of them landing. Punch/kick combo from Teixeira. Teixeira with another punch combo with 15 seconds left. Smith backed up to the fence. Close round. 10-9 Teixeira, 19-19 overall

Teixeira with a lot more damage to his face coming out for round 3 but Smith looks exhausted. Smith with a knockdown but Teixeira right up. May have been a slip. Teixeira lands what may have been an eye poke and Smith covering up. Teixeira knocks down Smith and goes to the ground with him. He takes the back and landing punches, working for a rear naked choke. Smith is covering up but ref Jason Herzog is letting him keep fighting. Teixeira into full mount and landing punches but he's tired as well. Smith escapes but Teixeira still on top. Teixeira working for a choke but Smith defending. Teixeira maybe going for a neck crank but Smith blocks it. Teixeira with knees to the body. Teixeira on Smith's back again. Ref warning him to fight back as Teixeira is landing punches. Smith bleeding from his left ear. Teixeira continuing to land hard shots while still on Smith's back. Smith works him back to top position. 10-8 Teixeira, 29-27 after 3

Teixeira lands a hard uppercut to start the round but Smith stays on his feet. Smith throwing elbows to the head but mostly just covering up. Teixeira is stalking him. Smith starts moving forward and landing punches and elbows. Teixeira landing hard punches. Smith with a desparation takedown attempt. Teixeira sprawls to defend it and Smith bleeding like a faucet. Teixeira takes his back and working for a choke. Teixeira with more punches to set up the choke. Teixeira stands up, forcing Smith up. Smith's face is a bloody mess. Smith fires back with a combo. Teixeira is landing hard with everything but Smith's punches aren't affecting Teixeira at all. Teixeira with a takedown at 2:45. Teixeira with punches to the body. Teixeira throwing elbows to the face that are partially blocked by Smith. Teixeira looks like he may be setting up an arm triangle. Teixeira with 42 strikes landed in the round. Seems like more. Teixeira moves into half guard with 40 seconds left. Teixeira into mount with 15 seconds left but not throwing much. 10-8 Teixeira, 39-35 after 4

Teixeira advancing again and landing punches. Teixeira with a takedown 20 seconds in. Smith seems to throwing up a desparation submission attempt. Teixeira just pounding him with elbows and punches. Teixeira into mount 1;00 in and landing punches and the ref FINALLY stops it. Probably about 8 minute and 100 or so strikes late.

Teixeira set a UFC record with his 11 finish at light heavyweight. Teixeira was interviewed by Daniel Cormier and said that he's one of the guy he's wanted to fight but now that he's moved to heavyweight, he can't. He mentioned Yoel Romero as a possible opponent.
