WWE 205 Live results: Number one contender's main event

The Big Takeaway --

Akira Tozawa emerged victorious over Ariya Daivari in a very good match and will go on to challenge Neville for the Cruiserweight title at SummerSlam.

Jack Gallagher also showed a killer instinct tonight that has been largely lacking from his act. Tony Nese was given a better showcase than usual, but Gran Metalik easily outclassed him in their match despite it being a losing effort.

Show Recap --

The show started off with a recap of Neville injuring Akira Tozawa's shoulder. Neville's issues with Tozawa and Ariya Daivari were shown as well before the regular intro. Corey Graves and Vic Joseph hyped up Jinder Mahal vs. Shinsuke Nakamura at SummerSlam before talking about Gran Metalik vs. Tony Nese and Tozawa vs. Daivari tonight.

Brian Kendrick came out to absolute dead silence before cutting a promo on Jack Gallagher, also to dead silence. Gallagher came out to do battle with him and hopefully finally end this feud.

Brian Kendrick defeated Jack Gallagher by DQ

Gallagher jumped him and landed a series of knees and forearm strikes. Gallagher headbutted him and Kendrick tried to leave, but Gallagher kicked the daylights out of him with some stomps for a DQ.

Gallagher tossed Kendrick into the barricade and really came off like a physical badass here before grinding his face into the LED board on the apron. Kendrick dove into the crowd to save himself while Gallagher looked on. Okay, this was great.

Rich Swann was playing WWE 2K17 before TJP insulted him. TJP said he's better and they proceeded to have a long, drawn-out conversation. Swann challenged him to a match next week, but TJP wanted a 2K17 match first.

Tony Nese came out to face Gran Metalik before bragging about his eight-pack. Nese helping TJP beat Swann last week was shown before Nese bragged about his physique more. They kept lingering on his giant forehead while he said more stuff about how powerful he is.

Gran Metalik cut a subtitled promo about how Nese is brawn, but his technique will fail him tonight.

Tony Nese defeated Gran Metalik

Nese shoved Metalik off a headlock so that he could pose. Metalik landed a series of arm drags, including a springing one off the ropes. He hopped to the apron and ate a big forearm, leading to Nese going for a baseball slide, missing, going to the floor, and eating a fast Asai moonsault.

Nese landed a gutbuster for two before driving a knee to the gut a few times and flapjacking him for two. Nese set him up top to pose, and got punched down and ate a crossbody for two. A ropewalk elbow drop got a near fall for Metalik. Nese kicked him off the second rope and landed a kneeling knee strike to win it.

Tozawa was shown stretching before his match with Daivari.

Dasha Fuentes met with Neville, who was asked a question about who he wants to see win. Neville said that Titus O'Neil and Tozawa have been a thorn in his side for too long -- so his response should be clear.

He didn't even know Daivari existed until he was disrespected last week, and he doesn't truly care who wins because they will all fall to the King of the Cruiserweights.

Daivari came out and cut a promo about dedicating his win tonight and future title win to another Iranian champion. He is fighting for a nation -- his nation, while Neville and Tozawa fight for themselves. Well, that was a strange babyface-style promo for a heel to cut.

Akira Tozawa defeated Ariya Daivari in a number one contender's match

They locked up and Tozawa won that amid a sea of "Ha!" chants. His act is the only one that can really get the crowd going on this show -- it's amazing. Tozawa chopped Daivari down and hit the standing senton. Daivari went out and Tozawa set up a dive, so Daivari pounced on him with a flying forearm to get an edge.

Tozawa hit a snap rana, but a brawl on the floor sent Tozawa's shoulder into the post. They teased a countout, but Tozawa came back in at nine. Neville was actually watching the screen to see what's going on backstage.

Daivari hammerlocked the arm and sent Tozawa into the buckle before locking on a cobra clutch and then transitioning it into a cobra hold crossface. Tozawa turned it into a cradle for two, but Daivari regained control with the hold. Tozawa escaped that but ate a divorce court codebreaker.

Daivari missed a splash, giving Tozawa a chance. Tozawa landed a shining wizard for two and went up top, but Daivari sent him down and landed the frog splash for a near fall. Tozawa avoided the Rainmaker and sent him outside for a suicide dive.

The senton off the top connected and Tozawa got the pin to punch his ticket to SummerSlam. Neville looked on unimpressed.
