WWE NXT results: First round of the Dusty Classic

The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic began as the first round took place on the latest episode of NXT. Four teams advanced to the semifinals after four matches on a show that ran long.

Most NXT episodes are approximately an hour in length. This show ran ten minutes longer than usual -- and the episode was packed with tournament matches.

The main event featured #DIY teaming together once again in NXT. Them teaming again would have had a greater impact on this episode if they had not teamed together on the main roster last month.

There was no mention on this show of Tommaso Ciampa having a neck injury that requires surgery. That is understandable considering an announcement of an injury would have upset the storyline on the show.

The episode opened with a video package hyping the tournament. A montage of all the teams saying “it’s time” signaled the beginning of the Dusty Classic.

Ricochet & Aleister Black defeated Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner in a Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic first round match

Black pinned Aichner after a Black Mass from out of nowhere. Black started the match against Aichner, and Black soon fired up with a flurry of offense. Black jumped off the middle rope -- only to get cut down with an uppercut from Aichner.

Barthel and Aichner got heat on Black as they made quick tags while working him over. They double-teamed Black, but he soon swept the legs to make a hot tag. Ricochet launched himself into the ring like a house of fire. He followed a springboard uppercut with a standing moonsault press for a two count on Aichner.

Barthel press slammed Ricochet off the top rope similar to a Ric Flair spot -- except Aichner caught Ricochet in mid-air for a delayed vertical suplex. The spot looked much more impressive than my description of it. Aichner then did a double springboard moonsault for a near fall.

Black tagged back in -- only to get posted by Barthel. Barthel and Aichner hit double dropkicks on Black with him tied in the tree-of-woe. As the action intensified, Ricochet springboarded into a super Frankensteiner. Ricochet followed that with a tope suicida.

Aichner was peppering Black with strikes. Black suddenly threw a kick to connect with Black Mass. Black then covered Aichner for the pinfall.

A recap from last week’s episode highlighted the double countout finish in a match between Keith Lee and Dominik Dijakovic. This led to an angle at the Performance Center where Dijakovic tried to start a fight with Lee. They meet in a rematch on an episode of NXT in two weeks time.

The Forgotten Sons (Wesley Blake & Steve Cutler w/ Jaxson Ryker) defeated Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch in a Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic first round match

Cutler pinned Lorcan after the Sons hit their finisher. On commentary, Percy Watson noted that the Forgotten Sons were the only team in the tournament to train under Dusty Rhodes himself.

The Sons got heat on Lorcan by utilizing quick tags and double-team moves. They worked over his back using backbreakers. When Burch finally tagged in, he cleaned house with German suplexes. Burch then delivered a missile dropkick off the middle rope.

Lorcan was selling his back as he and Burch went for their tandem finisher. However, Lorcan buckled as he sold his back. Lorcan still managed to do a dive outside the ring. Cutler cut him off with another backbreaker.

Cutler applied a Boston crab on Lorcan to further target the back. Burch leapt into the ring to make a save as he broke up the submission hold. An assisted missile dropkick by the Sons netted them a near fall.

While still selling his back, Lorcan fired up with chops and a double blockbuster. He was soon cut off and given a modified buckle bomb. The Sons then executed their finisher (which is a foot stomp/slop drop combination) and Cutler covered Lorcan for the pinfall.

NXT North American Champion Velveteen Dream sauntered on stage and climbed on top of the announce desk. Before he could start cutting a promo, the fans chanted for him to give a speech. Dream said he did not have a speech. Rather, he had a reminder that he was the new NXT North American Champion.

Matt Riddle strolled on stage to interrupt him. Riddle's new WWE nickname is the “Original Bro.” "King of Bros" sounded much more cool, but whatever bro.

Riddle said he wanted to congratulate Dream on his win. He also wanted a closer look at the title. After peeping it for a moment, Riddle wondered out loud how the title would look around his waist...bro.

“The Dream is not your bro,” Velveteen said.

Dream said the spotlight belonged to himself. As he said that, the lights in the building went dark. A spotlight then illuminated Dream as the segment ended.

A sit-down interview with the Sky Pirates furthered the build for a match on next week’s episode. Io Shirai said Bianca Belair was good -- but Shirai herself was the one who recently pinned NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler.

Sane said she believed in her tag partner. Shirai added that she “deserves” to be the next challenger. Shirai closed the promo by saying she was number one. On the next episode, Shirai and Belair face off in a match to determine which one challenges Baszler for the title at TakeOver: New York.

Moustache Mountain (Trent Seven & Tyler Bate) defeated The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) in a Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic first round match

Seven pinned Dawkins after Moustache Mountain delivered their finisher. The Street Profits got heat on Bate during the match. Seven eventually got a hot tag -- and he proceeded to clean house. Not for long, though.

Dawkins gave Bate a spinebuster as Ford jumped high off the top for a frog splash. That gave the Profits a near fall. Bate was then lifted up into an electric chair. Seven gave Ford a dragon suplex on the apron to break up the Profits' momentum.

Bate executed a German suplex on Dawkins before tagging Seven. Dawkins was put into a torture rack while Bate climbed the turnbuckles. Bate jumped off into a flying knee drop on Dawkins as Seven dropped him into a Burning Hammer. Seven then covered Dawkins for the pinfall.

#DIY (Johnny Gargano & NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa) defeated Undisputed Era (Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish) in a Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic first round match

Ciampa pinned O’Reilly upon execution of the DIY double strike finisher. The crowd loved DIY being back together. Each saved the other at different points in the match -- so they worked together well without teasing much dissension. However, Ciampa did look annoyed at one point.

DIY shined early on in the match. Gargano flew through the ropes with a tope suicida. Ciampa used a neckbreaker to get a two count on O’Reilly.

Gargano was on the apron when Fish swept his legs. Gargano landed hard. Undisputed Era began working him over as they got heat on him. They kept Gargano grounded. This was the point when Ciampa looked irritated.

Gargano delivered a tornado DDT to create separation. He slowly crawled over reaching for a tag. Fish tried to block the tag, but Ciampa sent him crashing into the ring steps. Ciampa then tagged in and went to work on Undisputed Era.

Ciampa dropped O’Reilly with the Tower of London for a two count. Ciampa went for a series of rolling German suplexes. Gargano leapt off the apron with a dive. Meanwhile, Ciampa delivered the Blue Thunder Bomb for a near fall on O’Reilly.

Gargano went for his slingshot spear, but O’Reilly countered by trapping him in a guillotine. Ciampa made a save to break up the submission hold. O’Reilly and Gargano traded strikes, which led to a double down.

O’Reilly tripped up Ciampa when he climbed the turnbuckles. Fish then gave Ciampa an avalanche Michinoku Driver off the top. Lord have mercy, that was a crazy bump for someone with an injured neck.

Ciampa kicked out of a subsequent pinning attempt. O’Reilly immediately transitioned into an armbar. Gargano jumped in to make a save and break up the hold. Ciampa spiked O’Reilly with a DDT. Gargano then slingshotted into the ring to deliver a DDT of his own on O’Reilly for a near fall.

To finish O’Reilly, DIY measured him for their tandem finisher. Ciampa covered him for the pin.

War Raiders walked on stage after the match. They had a staredown with DIY while the Raiders held up their Tag Team titles.
