WWE SmackDown live results: John Cena returns

is The build to WrestleMania 36 continues as SmackDown takes place from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, tonight.

The episode will feature the fallout from Super ShowDown. One day after winning the title from "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt, new Universal Champion Goldberg makes an appearance tonight in Boston. WWE.com is teasing Goldberg might have a new target on the roster, or that The Fiend might be out for revenge.

Roman Reigns may have ended his feud with King Corbin by defeating him in their steel cage match at Saudi Arabia. WWE will follow up on that tonight.

The Miz & John Morrison won the SmackDown Tag Team titles when they defeated The New Day at Super ShowDown. SmackDown Women's Champion Bayley also defeated Naomi to retain her title.

Plus, John Cena makes his return to WWE television in his hometown. Cena is set to participate in this year's WrestleMania, and we may find out more about his plans for the show tonight.

The New Universal Champion Bill Goldberg made his way to the ring to start SmackDown. Ring announcer Greg Hamilton introduced Goldberg, and the fans gave him a mixed reaction. The fans erupted in boos when his music ended. He said it's not about who was last but who's next. The fans continued to boo Goldberg as he spoke. 

Roman Reigns music hit, and he walked out. Reigns got mostly cheers when his music played. The fans erupted in boos again when Reigns music ended. Reigns and Goldberg had a staredown.

There was a slight "You both suck" chant. Reigns grabbed the mic and said he's next. The fans cheered, but there were still a lot of boos. 

A John Cena video package on his career aired. It highlighted his first match on SmackDown against Kurt Angle and Undertaker congratulating him after the match. 

SmackDown Woman's Champion Bayley vs. Naomi 

The bell rang, but Bayley grabbed a mic. She pointed out that she beat Naomi yesterday at Super Showdown. Bayley isn't competing tonight, especially in this town. 

Instead, Bayley introduced the future Grammy Award-winning Sasha Banks. Banks got a big reaction from the hometown fans. 

Bayley jumped Naomi from behind, but Naomi recovered and hit a dropkick. Naomi hit the rearview, but Banks jumped in for the disqualification. 

After the match, Bayley and Banks jumped Naomi and beat her down. Lacey Evans music hit and she ran down for the save. A brawl broke out between all four. 

Greg Hamilton then announced the match is now a tag team match. 

Lacey Evans & Naomi defeated Bayley & Sasha Banks

The faces sent the heels to the floor and followed up with double planches. 

Back from the break, Bayley and Banks were firmly in control. They isolated Naomi and cut her off from Evans. 

Banks rocked Naomi with double knees in the corner for a near fall. Banks taunted Evans and knocked her off the apron. Naomi fought back and knocked Bayley off the apron. 

Naomi hit an enziguri on Banks and tagged Evans. Evans ran wild and rocked Banks with a kick on the apron. Naomi hit a springboard crossbody on Bayley, but Banks broke up the pin attempt.

Banks hit the backstabber on Bayley, but Evans pulled her to the floor. Evans and Banks fought on the floor. Bayley grabbed at Evans from inside the ring, but Naomi rocked Bayley with a boot. The finish came when Naomi hit a sunset flip for the win. 

In the back, The New Day ran into Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode. They had a brief staredown.

Another John Cena video package aired this time, highlighting him winning his first WWE Championship from JBL at WrestleMania 21. 

Robert Roode (w/Dolph Ziggler) defeated Kofi Kingston (w/Big E)

Roode had the early advantage with a side headlock. Kingston fought back and hit a dropkick for a near fall. Kingston slowed the pace down and worked over Roode's arm.

Roode went back to the headlock, but Kingston broke free and hit a back elbow, which sent Roode to the floor.

Ziggler distracted the referee. Roode was standing near Big E and kicked the steps. Roode then pretended that Big E pushed him into the steps. The referee turned around and instantly believed Roode. The referee then threw Big E out from ringside and sent him to the back. 

Back from the break, Roode was firmly in control with a chin lock. 

During the match, they showed Mandy Rose watching in the back. Cole guessed that means Rose and Ziggler are together, but he doesn't understand why. Cole and Graves discussed Rose and Ziggler throughout the match. 

Roode missed a knee drop from the top, and Kingston made a comeback. He hit a clothesline, dropkick, and boom drop. Kingston set up for the Trouble In Paradise, but Roode avoided. 

Kingston hit a crossbody off the top for a very close near fall. He attempted the SOS, but Roode countered into a full nelson slam for a two count. 

Kingston missed a crossbody, but he rolled through. Roode caught Kingston with a spine buster for another close near fall. Roode attempted the Glorious DDT, but Kingston countered into the SOS. Kingston had the match won, but Ziggler put Roode's boot on the bottom rope.

Kingston yelled at Ziggler, and Roode rolled up Kingston from behind for the win. 

After the match, Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville watched the match. Cole noted that Deville called Ziggler Rose's man.

In the locker, Tucker approached Otis. Otis doesn't understand how Rose can date Ziggler. Tucker told Otis that he needs to get over Rose and move on.

Contract Signing: Intercontinental Champion Braun Strowman vs. Shinsuke Nakamura at Elimination Chamber 

Renee Young hosted the contract signing and introduced the participants. Sami Zayn and Cesaro accompanied Nakamura to the ring. They recapped the Symphony of Destruction match from last week and Nakamura needing stitches after the match.

Nakamura went to sign the contract, but Zayn wanted to review it first. Zayn told Storwman to take a seat, so Strowman threw the chair out of the ring. Zayn started to rant, but Strowman cut him off. Strowman doesn't care what's in the contract. He said he'd fight all three, and he signed the contract. 

Zayn pointed out that Strowman said he'd take on all three of them. Zayn changed the match to all three taking on Strowman. All three heels signed the contract.

Strowman moved the table and knocked down Nakamura and Cesaro. The heels recovered and beat down Strowman. Nakamura and Cesaro gave Strowman a double suplex with an assist from Zayn through the table. 

They recapped the Goldberg and Roman Reigns angle from earlier tonight. They officially announced Goldberg vs. Roman Reigns for WrestleMania 36. 

Daniel Bryan defeated Curtis Axel

Drew Gulak joined Michael Cole and Corey Graves on commentary. Cole screwed up Gulak's name again. Gulak discussed some of the holes in Bryan's game. 

Bryan had an early advantage but Axel took over. Bryan recovered and rocked Axel with kicks in the corner. Axel fought back and threw Bryan to the floor. 

Axel threw Bryan into the ring post. Bryan made a comeback and hit a running clothesline. Bryan rocked Axel with the Yes Kicks, but Axel rolled up Bryan for a near fall.

They traded pinfall attempts. Axel rocked Bryan and attempted the Perfect Plex.

Bryan reversed into Lebell Lock for the win.

Another John Cena video package aired highlighting John Cena beating AJ Styles to win his sixteenth World title. 

They announced Jeff Hardy for WWE Backstage this Tuesday night. 

New SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Miz & John Morrison made their way to the ring. They bragged about winning the titles yesterday from The New Day. Morrison and Miz celebrated and played Miz's music. 

A referee ran down to ringside and spoke to ring announcer Greg Hamilton. They announced Miz & Morrison's first title defense would be in the Elimination Chamber at the pay-per-view. The other teams in the match will be The New Day, Heavy Machinery, Lucha House Party, Robert Roode & Dolph Ziggler, and The Usos. 

The Usos defeated SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Miz & John Morrison In A Non-Title Match

The Usos had the early advantage until The heels took over. They isolated Jimmy in their corner and cut him off from Jey. 

During the match, there was a glitch with static and a weird symbol that was never acknowledged. 

The Miz slowed the pace down by applying a chin lock. Jimmy fought back and sent Miz to the floor.

Jimmy and Morrison went back and forth. Jimmy attempted a tag, but Miz pulled Jey off the apron. 

Back from the break, Jey rocked Miz with a big clothesline. Jimmy hit a suicide dive onto Miz on the floor. Jey then hit the splash, but Morrison got the knees up for a near fall. 

Morrison attempted Starship Pain, but Jimmy cut him off. Jey then rocked Miz with a superkick knocking him off the apron. 

The finish came when Jimmy hit a version of the Canadian Destroyer, which Graves called The Samon Destroyer, and Jey hit the splash for the win.

The fans popped big for Cena and erupted into a "Cena" chant. Cena tried speaking, but the fans broke into another loud "Cena" chant. 

He pointed out that it's WrestleMania season. Cena figured it's time to announce what he's doing at WrestleMania this year. He said that he will always be a WWE Superstar. 

Cena said he's doing something different this year. He knows how hard everyone works for one WrestleMania moment. Cena listens to the biggest superstar the WWE Universe. He noted "they" might not hear the fans, but Cena does. He knows they're passionate about the future of the WWE. The fans broke into another loud "Cena" chant. 

Cena's doing the right thing this year and said WrestleMania should go on without John Cena. The fans booed. He said it's not goodbye, but it's bye for now. He said WrestleMania spots should be earned not demanded. 

Cena noted that makes tonight very special because he doesn't know when he's going to be back. He got choked up when he mentioned his friends and family. 

The fans erupted into a loud "Cena" chant. Cena thanked the fans and walked off. Cena's music hit, and he walked up to the ramp. 

Cena stood at the top of the stage and gave a final salute.

Suddenly, the lights went out. When they came back on "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt was standing behind him. The fans popped big for The Fiend. He pointed at the WrestleMania sign, and the fans cheered. The fans broke into a "Yes" chant. Cena tipped his hat at The Fiend, and the lights went out.
