CM Punk recreates WWE Championship in fridge photo in throwback post

CM Punk surprisingly returned on Raw and ended Sami Zayn’s Undisputed WWE Title reign that barely lasted for two weeks. To celebrate the win he shared an image on Instagram with a cheeky throwback to his 2011 title in Chicago.

Following his 2011 win over John Cena at Money in the Bank in Chicago, Punk put the WWE title in his fridge as a bid to hint that he was keeping the championship and it’s reign fresh. Without context, Punk took to Instagram with the Undisputed WWE Title in the fridge without any caption indicating a subtle throwback.

This was Punk’s first match since losing the World Heavyweight Championship to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 42. Zayn captured the title at Night of Champions on June 27 in Saudi Arabia.

On the Raw after Mania, Punk confronted Cody Rhodes and indicated that a title opportunity could appear out of nowhere. Meanwhile on Raw, Rhodes was set to face Zayn for the championship after winning a No.1 contender’s match on SmackDown last week. He was attacked by Gunther backstage which led to Punk stepping up and taking his place against Zayn.
