WWE Championship match set for SummerSlam
Another big title match is set for SummerSlam.
Following the opening segment of SmackDown on Friday, a match between new WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and CM Punk is set for SummerSlam after their brief interaction in the opening of Friday’s show in Oklahoma City.
Nick Aldis, who was officially reinstated as GM at the start of the program, introduced Punk to the crowd. The new WWE Champion asked the crowd who would be worthy of a future title match, naming stars such as Sami Zayn, Gunther, and Royce Keys.
Cody’s music hit and quickly made clear what he wanted. He reminded Punk of the last time they were in the ring, saying that he told Punk to “just say when.” Punk asked the question, with Rhodes naming SummerSlam. The two shook hands, cementing the big match for Minneapolis next month.
After being gone for months following WrestleMania 42, Punk returned and successfully defeated Sami Zayn on Raw to win the WWE Championship. Rhodes was originally scheduled to compete in that match, but was injured at the start of the show by Gunther.
