New Women’s Intercontinental Champion crowned on WWE Raw

A new champion was crowned in WWE tonight on Raw, marking the first singles championship on the main roster for a company veteran. 

Raquel Rodriguez defeated Sol Ruca to win the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship. 

The match went a little over 10 minutes. Ruca went for the soul snatcher in the corner but Roxanne Perez interfered, grabbing her arm and pulling her face-first into the ringpost. Rodriguez, her face bloodied from earlier in the match, followed with a Tejana bomb to win the match and the title. 

She then celebrated with Perez and Liv Morgan, her teammates in the Judgment Day. 

Rodriguez, who played college basketball at Sam Houston and Texas A&M, spent a few years on the indies before signing with WWE in 2016. As Reina Gonzalez and then Raquel Gonzalez, she spent several years in NXT, where she won the Women’s Tag Team Championships twice (with Dakota Kai) and the NXT Women’s Championship once. She defeated IYO SKY for that belt before losing it to Mandy Rose. 

She debuted on the main roster in 2022, joining SmackDown as Raquel Rodriguez. Though this was her first singles championship on the main roster, she has won six WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships—one with Aliyah, one with Perez, and four with Morgan.
