Kurt Angle celebrates 30th anniversary of Olympic gold medal

On this day in 1996, one of the defining moments of Kurt Angle’s life took place.

Angle — with “a broken freaking neck” — defeated Abbas Jadidi of Iran on July 31, 1996 to win Olympic gold in freestyle wrestling. Now 57 years old, Angle made a post reflecting on the 30th anniversary of his medal win and encouraging all athletes to chase their dreams like he did:

  • It’s hard to believe that it’s been three decades since I stood on that podium, proudly winning the Gold Medal against Abbas Jadidi. I grew up a laborer’s son from Dormont Pittsburgh, I never imagined my dreams would ever come true.
  • This journey has taught me that discipline beats excuses every time. All you need is a dream, and anything is possible. I didn’t just represent my hometown and my college, I proudly wore the colors of the United States of America on my heart, driven by blood, sweat, tears, and even a broken neck.
  • Looking back, if I had the chance to do it all over again, my answer would always be a resounding LET’S GO!

The Olympic notoriety helped propel Angle to a Hall of Fame career in pro wrestling, becoming a World Champion and an all-time great for WWE and TNA. His last match took place at WWE WrestleMania 35 in 2019. At that time, Angle was no longer able to perform at the level he was used to after all of the damage his body had taken.

Angle is now involved with Real American Freestyle as a commentator and partner. The freestyle wrestling organization was founded by businessman Chad Bronstein, wrestling coach Izzy Martinez, Eric Bischoff, and the late Hulk Hogan.

Nikoletta, one of Angle’s six children, has taken a strong interest in amateur wrestling and accidentally knocked out one of her father’s teeth recently while practicing doing a moonsault on a trampoline.
