Update on AEW Redemption pay-per-view buys | Exclusive
An update is available regarding how AEW Redemption did on pay-per-view.
Dave Meltzer addressed how the show is trending on various platforms in Friday’s edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Meltzer noted that the show is currently trending to do around 115,000 to 125,000 buys, which would put it at the lowest number PPV number of the year for the company.
Meltzer wrote:
“Early estimates are the lowest PPV numbers of the year, maybe 115,000 to 125,000. The early numbers I got were surprisingly good on the show, as were Google searches (up 41 percent domestically and 25 percent worldwide from Forbidden Door shockingly) and even our poll responses were up 16.5 percent from the show in San Jose.
But the key right now is HBO MAX and those numbers and other streaming numbers were apparently down from Forbidden Door and Dynasty, which were the two lowest numbers of the year. But those other indicators are historically usually good overall predictors so maybe in the end this will be closer to Forbidden Door and Dynasty numbers.”
AEW Dynasty is believed to have done around 145,000 buys. Meltzer reported last month that the buys for Forbidden Door were trending slightly lower than that.
Also in the Observer, Meltzer noted that many expected the pay-per-view to do lower than normal, citing the once-planned Kenny Omega vs. MJF match being moved up to Beach Break on television. Kevin Knight was given an AEW World title match against Omega following Omega’s win over MJF.
Several other big AEW stars were not on the show in Montreal as well, including Swerve Strickland, Mercedes Mone, Kazuchika Okada, Konosuke Takeshita, Hangman Page, Darby Allin, Mark Briscoe, Mistico, FTR and Ricochet.
