CM Punk reflects on 20-year anniversary of WWE ECW debut
CM Punk has been reflecting on the 20-year anniversary of his WWE debut.
Punk defeated Justin Credible on the August 1, 2006 edition of WWE’s relaunched version of ECW. It was the eighth episode of the show and took place at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City.
WWE has released merchandise honoring Punk’s 20 years with the company. Punk commented on this in an Instagram story on Saturday, writing:
“I debuted on WWE TV twenty years ago today.
From Philadelphia to Minnesota and everywhere in between. Today is for the fans. Thank you for the support.
This is a cool shirt. It means a lot to me. I’m fortunate I get to do this. I enjoy every moment in front of a live audience. It’s why I do house shows. It is a privilege. I wrestle every match like it is my last because I never know when it will be. Enjoy yourself. It’s later than you think…. Love you all.
This is the job. This is the responsibility.”
Punk also recently appeared on ESPN and mentioned that his match against Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam Saturday falls on the anniversary of his first televised match for the company.
Punk said:
“August 1st, Saturday, first night of SummerSlam, the show that I’m wrestling on, will be my 20th anniversary of debuting in WWE. And what keeps me going is the fact that everyone kind of looks at that like, ‘Oh, you’re finishing up. You’re getting ready to say goodbye.’ And I look to older athletes that have been in that same position, and I’m talking, like, LeBron, Tom Brady, people who are extraordinary at what they do when they necessarily shouldn’t be that good. And that kind of feeds the drive and the ego a little bit. I like proving people wrong.”
Punk had been wrestling on ECW house shows leading up to his television debut. He later challenged for the ECW World Championship in the Elimination Chamber match at the infamous December to Dismember 2006 pay-per-view. Bobby Lashley won the match to take the title from The Big Show. Punk later defeated John Morrison at an ECW taping on September 1, 2007 to win the title. Punk held the belt until losing it to Chavo Guerrero on the January 22, 2008 edition of ECW on SciFi.
