WWE reveals bracket for Roman Reigns Mexico City title shot tournament
WWE has revealed the bracket and first-round schedule for its tournament to determine Roman Reigns’ next World Heavyweight Championship challenger.
When Raw comes to Mexico City on September 14, Reigns will be defending his title against one of the top luchadores in WWE/AAA. The tournament consists of eight potential challengers, with three first-round bouts set for Raw and one scheduled for AAA:
- Penta vs. Laredo Kid (Monday, August 10 episode of WWE Raw)
- Psycho Clown vs. La Parka (Saturday, August 15 episode of AAA)
- Dragon Lee vs. El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. (Monday, August 17 episode of WWE Raw)
- Rey Fenix vs. El Fiscal (Monday, August 17 episode of WWE Raw)
The bracket is set up in a way that could potentially result in brothers Penta and Rey Fenix facing off against each other in the finals. If that happens, it would be their first match against each other for WWE.
Reigns retained his World Heavyweight Championship against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam, and this week’s Raw ended with WWE teasing that Reigns and AAA general manager Rey Mysterio had something to talk about. Mysterio then announced this number one contender’s tournament.
“Roman recognized how important lucha libre is to me and how important this night is,” Mysterio said. “And that’s why he has agreed to defend the World Heavyweight Championship that night on Raw. Now, I promised to deliver Roman a worthy opponent. And we’ve agreed that a challenger needs to earn this opportunity.”

Before this Mexico City date, Reigns will be appearing on the August 17 and August 31 editions of Raw. His upcoming schedule also includes Money in the Bank (October 10) and Survivor Series (November 28). If Reigns retains against his Mexico City challenger, a title defense against LA Knight might be in the works for Money in the Bank. WWE teased that idea on Raw this past Monday.
