AEW’s Buddy Matthews updates injury status after ankle surgery

Buddy Matthews

AEW fans have not seen Buddy Matthews since he injured his ankle at this past February’s Grand Slam Australia but on Wednesday, he gave an update on his status via a post on Instagram.

“Today was the first time since surgery to hit a hack squat,” Matthews posted, along with video showing him stretching and squatting (seen below). “Still very restricted with ankle mobility but working on it daily!”

“Numbness is still a factor but hopefully subsides in the near future, but still unknown at this time,” Matthews continued. “Swelling depends on the amount of rehab I’ve done that day but easily maintained with icing post. Take each day as it comes!”

Matthews injured his ankle while vaulting into the ring before the aforementioned Brisbane match against Kazuchika Okada. Despite suffering ligament and cartilage damage, he still wrestled for over 13 minutes before losing. Matthews had announced in June that his ankle was not healing properly and then said in August that he would be undergoing surgery to repair the damage.

He has not given a timeline on a potential return to the ring.
